Meshuggah Announces Live DVD

Commemorating the 25-year anniversary since the recording of the band's first EP, Sweden’s extreme musical deviants in Meshuggah have revealed the artwork and the track listing to their upcoming live DVD / 2-CD release "The Ophidian Trek," due out worldwide this Fall and also available in Blu-ray.

With visual footage shot in the U.S. & Europe during "The Ophidian Trek" tour and festival footage from Wacken Open Air 2013 in Germany, the live audio was processed & edited by Meshuggah guitarist Fredrik Thordendal, mixed by Daniel Begstrand, and mastered by Mats “Limpan” Lindfors.

Drummer Tomas Haake shares the following about the upcoming DVD: “We’re really stoked about this new Meshuggah live dvd! It’s been 4 years since the release of 'Alive' and with the band celebrating 25 years, we felt that we just had to get another one of these puppies out there! Audio/Video was recorded during our European stretch of 'The Ophidian Trek' tour, as well as at the Wacken open air festival - and we’re super proud of how it came out! For this one we used the extremely talented photographer Anthony Dubois for filming and editing etc and he’s really done a stunning job with it! Hope you guys dig it and here’s to another 25!! (or maybe just a little less).” More...

Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 10

This past Tuesday, April 1st, dawned with a bang and ended with the agonized wail of countless deceived, angry, and fed-up folks. It's what the kids these days might call "butthurt." Even in this high-speed age of unlimited information, it seems that some still have trouble checking the calendar or fact-checking stories.

Your Metalunderground.com Official Podcast co-hosts, Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) found this all quite amusing. So in the irreverent spirits of Mark Twain, Orson Welles, and The Onion, they decided Tuesday evening to chuck all journalistic ethics and decency right out the window and wage a valiant, side-splitting battle against truth.

This week's episode is one hundred percent fact-free, and features a tongue-in-cheek rundown of some of Metalunderground.com's 2014 April Fools highlights, posted as headlines throughout Tuesday.

Among the lampooned: every single member of Metallica (in what is sure to be an evil, thrashing comeback effort, "Hell Hath No Fury"), prison escapee Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying), evasive interviewee Phil Anselmo (Pantera, etc.), would-be cinematic deity Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), and noted Oscar-lacking actor Leonardo DiCaprio, whose "Meshuggah face" in the recent hit "The Wolf Of Wall Street" has earned him an onstage guest appearance with the twisted Swedish metal titans.

Please forgive the avalanche of lies and silly humor; we advise you to remove your "serious" caps for this episode. Also, a few bong rips beforehand wouldn't hurt. Take a listen here and enjoy!

Meshuggah Comments On 25th Anniversary

Tomas Haake has checked in with the following statement about Meshuggah celebrating its 25th anniversary:

"You try to wrap your head around it but comprehension fails - it's been twentyfive years since the first official Meshuggah release! The self-titled (though often referred to as 'Psykisk testbild') EP came out on the small local Umeå label Garageland Records in 1989, making 2014 the big TWO FIVE for the band!! Hoooly shit!!

"Who would have thought huh!? - That our small group of young guys would get to - not only write and record our own quirky, deviant style of metal - but that we would still be doing it a quarter century later, making our living off of what we love to do!! Now in our forties we can't but look back at it jawdropped and baffled at the fact!!

"We always set out to do something new, something different from the music we heard around us - something that would be a challenge to ourselves to write, learn and perform. Something truly unique. Looking back at our career we feel that we have actually been successful in doing just that!!

"We have for so many years been blessed with a super loyal fanbase and a still-growing one at that, allowing us to continue to create freely and without boundaries! For this we sincerely thank all of our fans that have stood by us all this time! More...

Meshuggah Announces Latin American Shows

Good things come to those who wait, and those in Latin America have waited long enough. Nuclear Blast issued the following announcement about upcoming live shows from Meshuggah:

"Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time in their career, Meshuggah headed to México and South America – home to some of the most passionate metal fans known to humanity. Exactly how passionate? Oh, you know… the kinds of fans who forsake eating and save their money for three months to buy one single concert ticket; the kind who sing guitar solos en mass out loud; the kind who rip out their own hair and leave it on the venue floor as offerings to the bands they love.

"What we’ve got here is what the National Weather Service states are the three necessary ingredients for a 'perfect storm:'

A) A flow of cool & dry air generated by a high-pressure system from one direction (i.e. MESHUGGAH)
B) A flow of warm air from a low-pressure system from another direction (i.e. México & South America)
C) Tropical moisture (i.e. the blood, sweat, and tears of joy courtesy of MESHUGGAH fans)

"Get ready for the experience of a lifetime. Following this landmark tour, Africa and Antarctica will be the only two remaining continents as-yet-physically-untouched by a live Meshuggah concert."

11/12/13 Theater Caupolican – Santiago, CHILE

Pit Stories: Fungus Enhanced Meshuggah

The mosh pit is home to some of the craziest events known to the musical world, from flying body parts to bizarre sexual encounters, and each week we find metal bands to share their most interesting mosh pit stories. Today we've got the following tale of Kasey from Ninth Moon Black experiencing technical metal live in a whole new way, courtesy of a few psychedelic fungi:

I once took mushrooms right before going into a Meshuggah concert. For a very brief moment, I contemplated the ramifications then shrugged them away. I quickly popped the magical fungi into my mouth thinking I’d have plenty of time to adjust once I got through the doors but the mushrooms had other plans. While I stood in line for what seemed an eternity, the psilocybin took over my senses. My stomach churned, my mind turned sideways and the antennae of heightened awareness tuned into the world with that bizarre psychedelic slant. As I entered the venue I felt like a ship navigating some alien terrain.

The Faceless were in full swing and never before had I experienced music so terrifying, yet so awesome. The venue was already near capacity and the floor a sea of movement. I hugged the walls trying desperately to avoid any contact with the people moshing as well as the extraterrestrial spirits hovering above the crowd. They watched me with their sinister gaze that was most likely only visible to my eyes. I managed to make my way to the back of the room, anchoring myself to the wall until Cynic took the stage. Their entrance was serene and they lured me away from the walls as they calmed the crowd with their meditative musings. I closed my eyes throughout the duration of their set, allowing myself to journey through their progressive zen. As they finished off their set with "Evolutionary Sleeper," I opened my eyes only to realize I was damn close to the front row.

It was time to make a quick decision; take the plunge and enter the dark waters of Meshuggah or steer my inebriated vessel back to where I had watched The Faceless, and witness Meshuggah from the safety of the “outside.” Since the very reason I was there that evening was to see Meshuggah, I decided I needed to brace myself and grabbed tightly to the barrier between myself and the stage. A moment later, Fredrik Thordendal positioned himself right in front of me with Jens Kidman just off to my right. They began to play, their music taking hold of sanity and commanding bodies into rhythmic collisions. Song after song, I fought the wave of bodies crashing into my own when suddenly I had an epiphany, the madness of the mosh pit becoming a metaphor for my life. Rather than fight the aggression, why not ride it?
