Irish post black metal act Altar Of Plagues is to end this year. The band's final release "Teethed Glory and Injury," out now via Profound Lore Records, will be its last. Multi-musician James Kelly (Guitars, Keyboards, Vocals, Drums) made the following announcement about the band's ceasing of activities on Facebook:
"Altar of Plagues will conclude this year.
"I decided before writing 'Teethed Glory and Injury' that it would be our final album. It was executed with this fact in mind. I can state it no more simply than this; it is time to move on.
"We considered whether or not we would say anything at all regarding this. But at the very least, we would like to give people an opportunity to see us perform again should they care to. And so, these upcoming shows will be our final.
"Our very final performance will be on October 19th, at Unsound Festival Poland. As a festival that celebrates the eclectic and the eccentric, I can think of no other place that would be more appropriate for this occasion. It is exactly the type of environment in which I have always aspired to share our work, and it will be a celebratory occasion to conclude at what I believe will be the peak of our existence as a group. Altar of Plagues is releasing a split with Year of No Light via Music Fear Satan / Radar Swarm Records. The Altar of Plagues contribution to the split, originally conceived prior to the "White Tomb" sessions, is now available for streaming online via Brooklynvegan. The band also commented:
"We are proud to finally share a piece of music that was conceived in 2007 prior to the recording of our album 'White Tomb.' Revisiting older work which represents an early stage in our development has been a refreshing experience.
"It is interesting to observe how much the 'black' metal landscape has changed in such a short period of time. When this piece was created, the musical territory in which we resided felt small and largely unnoticed. Our split with Year of No Light is now streaming in full thanks to our friends at Brooklyn Vegan."

Back in 2005, Alcest released a two song EP called “Le Secret,” a gem that eventually would cause a stir in the hornet nest that is the black metal community. If you didn't gather by the title, Alcest is a French band, and one masterminded by front-man Neige. With a strong pedigree in the French black metal scene, Neige was a musician who not only came forward in the 00s with multiple acts in Alcest and Amesoeurs, but also made contributions to essential French albums from the likes of Mortifera and Peste Noire. While Norway and the adjacent Scandinavian realms are often thought of as the wintery fortress of black metal, the French have long held their own with a melancholic and melodic take on the genre including the infamous Les Légions Noires whom you can read about in a previous Metal Underground Sunday Old School article.
So, what was so special about Neige’s little two song EP? Well for one it wasn’t little at all. It was nearly 30 minutes long and an infusion of 90s shoegaze, post-rock, and perfectly distilled black metal. More...

ALTAR OF PLAGUES announced the completion of their new album today. Their record label, Profound Lore Records, issued the following statement:
Ireland’s most promising extreme metal band since Primordial, ALTAR OF PLAGUES, have completed work on their monstrous, atmospherically crushing debut full-length album, “White Tomb”.
Already gaining quite a reputation with their “Through The Cracks Of The Earth” demo and especially with their self-released epic “Sol” EP (and along with touring the UK with MAYHEM, in which a few testimonials would reveal that Altar Of Plagues would upstage the Norwegian legends during the tour), Altar Of Plagues have morphed their layered sound into an apocalyptic sonic maelstrom that not only upholds the band’s black metal beginnings, but takes that initial paradigm and into more-vast, epic, experimental and ambient cinematic musical terrain. Where “Sol” was an immense progression from their demo, taking the band’s bleak vision of a scenario of desolate and abandoned urban wastelands and creating and shaping their distinct style of apocalyptic virulent melodic black metal, “White Tomb” takes the sonic vision of “Sol” and expands it much further into new epic, destructive and desolate, collapsing, and unforgiving sonic realms. If black metal traditionally conjures scenes of epic nature, massive cascading waterfalls and engulfing forests, Altar Of Plagues creates stark images of crumbling skyscrapers, dying and rotten urban structures, empty cracked worn down highways and desolate vast oceans.
The album’s warm edged sound and uncompromising production portray’s the band’s visceral wall-of-sound effect without falling into a typical synthetically triggered digital-sounding paradigm nor falling into a post-whatever sounding mess. Other elements such as KHANATE/BURNING WITCH-esque painful slow trudging doom also find their way into the mix as “White Tomb” also features guest vocals from Nathan Misterek of the now defunct doom gods GRAVES AT SEA, minimalistic electronica and haunting Cold Meat Industry industrial ambient, along with the towering apocalyptic vibes of OLD MAN GLOOM and old-school ISIS (“Mosquito Control/Celestial” era) layered with the instrumental textures that bands like MOGWAI and RED SPAROWES portray, “White Tomb” (mastered by Colin Marston of KRALLICE/BEHOLD… THE ARCTOPUS/DYSRHYTHMIA etc.) is a vicious and atmospheric pillage that orchestrates the collapse of Earth; a depiction of civilization (or what’s left of it) in despair attempting to re-build a world destroyed and shattered by their own hands.
