Shai Hulud Announces More Tour Dates

After completing a tour of Europe in support of Propagandhi, followed by a headlining tour, Shai Hulud has returned to the states and is preparing for a next set of confirmed shows.

In July, fans on the east coast will be treated to a handful of shows featuring Earth Crisis as part of the Firstorm 20th Anniversary Tour. Additional support for the east coast portion of the tour will be from Thy Will Be Done and White Widows.

Additional Shai Hulud shows have been confirmed for June and July, including an appearance at Amnesia Rockfest in Montebello, QC. Find the complete listing of dates below.

Shai Hulud's Matt Fox reflects on 2013: "2013 has been a banner year for Shai Hulud, and it's not even summer yet. Seeing the release of 'Reach Beyond The Sun,' touring Australia as a part of the Soundwave Festival (headlined by Metallica - pretty much the reason we play heavy music) and having just returned from Europe after a tour with one of our favorite bands, Propagandhi, has made this year thus far both a blur and a dream, or one and the same depending on how well you remember your dreams, if you can remember them at all. 2013 is one dream we won't soon forget, etched further into our memory receptors - if there are such things - with the dates we confirmed with Earth Crisis, a huge and direct influence on the formation and existence of Shai Hulud. This is a special year for us, and we're grateful not only to share it with those who find something in our music that speaks to them, but also with so many of the bands whose music has spoken, and still speaks to us." Earth Crisis Signs With Candlelight

Candlelight Records proudly announces the worldwide signing of Earth Crisis. The Syracuse-based band, featuring vocalist Karl Buechner, guitarists Scott Crouse and Erick Edwards, bassist Ian Edwards, and drummer Dennis Merrick, is currently writing and demoing material for a ninth studio album. Recording is expected to begin in June. Candlelight also comments on the band:

"No hardcore or metal fan can be unaware of Earth Crisis or the contributions the band has made to heavy music since their founding in 1989. Championing the weak and the voiceless, the band has over 200,000 catalogue sales to date, according to Nielsen Soundscan. Regardless of passing trends, the five-piece has maintained their vision, dedication to their craft (and causes), and most importantly respected their fans in the 20-plus years of their performing career. In 2013, the band embarks on a new chapter delivering mission music as only they can."

Guitarist Scott Crouse says, “We are excited to be working on a new album, and equally as excited to be working on it with Candlelight. Their roster speaks for itself. It's an honor to be alongside bands like Fear Factory, Corrosion of Conformity, and our old friends in Vision of Disorder.” More...

Five-Minute History of Hardcore and Metal Fusion

Beefy funny man, Billy Milano once said “Skinheads and bangers and punks stand as one Crossover to a final scene.” This insight he offered on S.O.D.’s 1985 release “Speak English or Die” would serve as a rallying cry for hardcore punks and metal heads to come together. Not only did this song help create a mindset for bringing together two scenes; it also constructed a formula for the two styles to merge. Known simply as metalcore or crossover, the term came to describe how hardcore bands added metal’s solos and heft to their arrangements, while thrash absorbed the speed, attitude and brevity of hardcore to their compositions.

Milano also claimed “It’s not the way you wear your hair, it’s what’s inside of you.” Even though these words ring true twenty-seven years after publication, and so often we see the two lines blurring together, hair styles have pretty much remained the same (minus poodle hair and mullets). Short hair, often bald or spiky, is still relegated to punks, while long hair is a feature of head bangers. Regardless of attitude and opposition to the mainstream, many punks and metal heads prefer to segregate.

After hearing an inspiring hardcore/crossover album from "The Casualties" and attending festivals such as Fun Fun Fun Fest and Chaos in Tejas that mesh metal and hardcore in the last year, I felt the need to research and write an article on the history of this topic. Through the usual resource of the Internet, Ian Christe’s book “Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal” and a first person source, I hope to shed light on this phenomenon. In the following article, we will look at the interchangeable qualities of punk and metal, as well as delving into each style’s social constraints. We will look at the bands that started this movement and analyze how the art form has evolved. Ready yourself for a crash course on punk-thrash crossover movement. More...

Earth Crisis Posts "Neutralize The Threat" Artwork

Earth Crisis has announced the new album "Neutralize the Threat" is set for a July 12th release date. The band also teamed with artist Ryan Clark to create the artwork, which can be viewed below. Ryan had the following to say:

"Earth Crisis was a seminal band for me. When I was introduced to hardcore, EC was a band that seemed to stand out from the rest. Their unique blend of metal and hardcore made me an instant fan. I remember many EC shows in the mid nineties, climbing atop the crowd, pointing at Karl, screaming 'Street by street! Block by block!'

"These guys are partly responsible for what I've been doing with my life for the past 15+ years, so when I was asked to create the artwork for their 2011 record, I naturally jumped at the chance. Not only were they absolutely great to work with, but they've still got it- Neutralize is a flat-out SICK record."

Earth Crisis Completes New Album

American hardcore/metal crossover outfit Earth Crisis has announced that they have completed work on their brand new album, "Neutralize The Threat." The record is scheduled to be released on July 12th through Century Media Records. Speaking about the album, the band had the following to say:

"We are very happy with how Neutralize The Threat came out. Musically, it resembles the song structures on To The Death, but with a Gomorah's Season Ends vibe thrown in. Every song is lyrically inspired by real-life vigilante actions that have taken place around the globe. The topics range from The Black Panther Party to Bernard Goetz and we think it's an original lyrical concept for the band, while also retaining some subject matter we are known for dealing with in the past. Zeuss is the man and definitely delivered the best sounding record we have ever had! We can't wait for you guys to hear it!"

Earth Crisis Comments On Walter Bond's Arrest

Vegan, straight-edge band Earth Crsis wrote the song "To Ashes" about Walter Edmund Bond, who has now been arrested and charged with burning down a sheepskin factory. Guitarist Scott Crouse further has commented on the situation:

"Recently Walter, the man whose actions inspired our song ‘To Ashes,’ has been arrested on alleged arson charges. Our motivation behind writing the song ‘To Ashes’ was to show the passion and frustration of a man who reached his boiling point. The extremes that Walter went to save his brother’s life we find inspiring, mainly because they were acts of property destruction against his adversaries, not acts of violence. We wanted to simply document what many in the straight edge community already deemed as a heroic and selfless action. Regarding Walters current arrest, we don't have much to say since right now they are merely accusations until he is proven guilty.

"We were also beyond disappointed that we didn't get a chance to play last Sunday at The Sound and Fury Festival. It was a weekend of canceled flights, wondering if all the members would even make it out here and three trips to LAX. Hey, at least we can all say we saw a motorcycle in the pit right?

"So far we have about four new songs written and are hoping to start working on vocals this fall. The plan is to have 10 new songs and re-record a few older songs that are live set staples. We are hoping to start recording in January 2011 with an as of yet undetermined producer."
