Jamie Hooper, Sunny Dhak and Bob Froese originally got together to do a one-off reunion gig for an old group of theirs - however, things went so well they decided to continue under a new moniker. A five-track demo of the new band, now dubbed 3 Inches of Blood after a particularly gruesome dream of Froese's, found its way over to the house of Hot Hot Heat keyboardist Steve Bays. Bays' friend, death metal vocalist Cam Pipes, was impressed with 3 Inches' old school sound, which sounds like the shrieking vocal assault of Rob Halford, the epic guitars and storytelling of Iron Maiden, the pirate theme of Running Wild, and the lasting influence of the British New Wave of Heavy Metal.

Although the group had little distribution for the record, they did share the same U.K. label as The Darkness, who at the time were on their way to becoming the UK's latest rock sensation. When 3 Inches went overseas, they hooked up with The Darkness for a UK tour. The tour was a smash success. Due to this bubbling under at the press level, Roadrunner Records took notice of the group's demo, and signed the band in 2004.

3 Inches began work on "Advance and Vanquish," determined to make it a "classic" metal album. Musically, the band has expanded on their classic metal roots, developing into one of the tightest hard rock bands of modern times.

3 Inches Of Blood: Yes, We Do Play D&D!

With swords held high and shields in position, 3 Inches of Blood have been waging a valiant battle against — well, anyone who doesn't have a soft spot for mythical beasts and medieval warfare. And, for the most part, their holy war has been a great success.

The Vancouver, British Columbia, power/classic-metallers' 2002 debut, Battlecry Under a Winter Sun, earned them a deal with Roadrunner, through which they issued their second disc, 2004's well-received Advance and Vanquish. And the band has wowed crowds on tour slots opening for Iron Maiden, Cradle of Filth and others. This summer, 3 Inches of Blood will play Ozzfest's second stage around the time they release their third disc, Fire Up the Blades, June 26.

Of course, there have been casualties along the way. Original drummer Geoff Trawick and his brother, bassist Rick, left the band in 2004, leaving 3 Inches scrambling to find last-minute replacements before recording Advance and Vanquish. Then, shortly after releasing the LP, guitarists Sunny Dhak and Bobby Froese quit the band and were replaced by Justin Hagberg and Shane Clark. After that, drummer Matt Wood quit in July 2005 because of personal and professional differences.

"War is never easy, but sometimes reinforcements are a necessity to make you stronger," singer Jamie Hooper shrugged. "I'm sure those guys think they're better off where they are, but we're definitely in a better place now, too. The new guys are more into what we're doing and they're better players, so there are skills there that weren't before. And with [newcomer] Alexei [Rodriguez] on the drums, we're able to play faster than ever."

The improvements are evident on Fire Up the Blades. Like its predecessor, the album is rooted in charging rhythms; thick, crunchy riffs that sound like a cross between Hammerfall and Judas Priest; and the shrill-yowl-meets-guttural-growl of dueling singers Hooper and Cam Pipes. But this time, the playing is sharper, the arrangements more multifaceted and the hooks more deeply embedded.

3 Inches of Blood started writing songs for the new album last fall at a house they rented in Tacoma, Washington. "We wanted to get away from Vancouver so we wouldn't be distracted by our drunken friends," Hooper said. "So we spent a few months there jamming eight hours a day and drinking even more than we would have back home."

The band entered Vancouver's the Armory and Mushroom Studios in October and spent two months tracking with producer and Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison. The oft-masked barbarian took a few turns at the drum kit and even recorded a few background chants.

"We were so stoked to find out he was a fan of our band," Hooper said. "We met him when we were on tour with Satyricon and he was playing drums with them. And that's where we really got to know him. He's an amazing producer and an even better beer drinker."

Amazingly, the partying didn't impair the band's timing or ability to groove. And, while 3 Inches of Blood have been known to argue with past members on previous occasions, this time they got along in the studio like frat brothers at a strip club. "The songs were so exciting and fun to record," Hooper said. "Nothing had to be forced and everything came out so easily."

As much fun as 3 Inches of Blood have when they're recording, they're pretty serious about the final musical results and redo anything they're the least bit unsatisfied with. The same can't be said for their lyrics, which are goofy as hell and inspired mostly by fantasy, horror and science fiction.

"We try to keep reality out of the lyrics as much as possible," Hooper said. "I like the idea of music being escapist fiction. I hate writing songs about how sh---y your day was or how sh---y the world is. Yeah, let's all get bummed out and cry. F--- that. I'd rather go off into a dream world. And, yes, we do play Dungeons & Dragons, and we're not ashamed to admit it."

Behemoth Added To Ozzfest 2007 Second Stage

Polish extreme metal titans BEHEMOTH have been added to the Ozzfest 2007 lineup. The band has landed the direct-support, non-rotating slot right before second-stage headliners HATEBREED. This is the first time a Polish act has ever participated in Ozzfest.

The Ozzfest 2007 billing is now shaping up as follows:

Main Stage:

OZZY OSBOURNE
LAMB OF GOD
[to be announced]
LORDI

Second Stage – Non-Rotating:

HATEBREED
BEHEMOTH
MONDO GENERATOR

Second Stage – Rotating:

NILE
ANKLA
CIRCUS DIABLO
THE SHOWDOWN
3 INCHES OF BLOOD
DAATH
IN THIS MOMENT
[to be announced]

Nergal (vocals, guitars) states, "I couldn't be more proud about the fact that BEHEMOTH will be joining this year's Ozzfest! I'm speechless and beyond excited. No doubt it's going to be the brightest point of our career thus far, and I hope that this will help to spread dangerous and extreme music among the masses. It's an honor to team up with our longtime brothers in NILE and to share the stage with LAMB OF GOD and HATEBREED, not to mention the legend himself! With such a bill, you can expect nothing but pure metal carnage! What makes me even more excited is the little fact that we will be releasing our new album during the tour. So expect songs from 'The Apostasy', as well as some older shit. We'll definitely make sure the set is going to be brutal as fuck. You've been warned!" More...

In This Moment Added to Ozzfest 2007

IN THIS MOMENT will spend this summer on Ozzfest 2007 as a part of the second stage's rotating lineup alongside such acclaimed artists as HATEBREED, NILE, THE SHOWDOWN and 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, among others. This will be the group's biggest tour yet, and as guitarist Chris Howorth states, it is an opportunity they meet with open arms. "We are very proud and honored to be a part of this year's Ozzfest," he said. "Not only are we huge Ozzy fans and excited to be playing with him every day, but this year's festival is free, so everyone has a chance to come out and be a part of this amazing experience. It's going to be a great chance to reach out to an entirely new audience. We are also looking forward to playing with and getting to know all the rest of the bands on the tour. It's so surreal because not too long ago we were watching the Ozzfest as fans out in the crowd, and now we are performing. It's an unbelievable feeling — we are so blessed!"

3 Inches of Blood Give Tour Update

3 Inches of Blood had this to say as they wrap up their North American tour and head to Europe:

"The Six week U.S. tour is now complete! Cradle of Filth and The 69 Eyes were excellent to tour with. All the shows were either sold out or very near to it. For us it was a great opportunity play in front of larger crowds and make a lot of new fans. We are most grateful for the experience.

"In the next few days we will begin a three week excursion overseas. We will be heavily assaulting England over that time, but will also make sorties to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. This will serve as a warm up for the impending release of Fire Up The Blades which will now hit unsuspecting victims on June 26."

3 Inches Of Blood Feel Dirty Around Goths

Chart Attack reports: Vancouver's 3 Inches Of Blood — currently on the road in support of fellow black metal behemoths Cradle Of Filth and Finnish glamsters The 69 Eyes — are clearly the black sheep of the tour.

"We feel like a bunch of dirt bags next to all of these goth people," jokes vocalist Jamie Hooper while navigating the wilds of Vermont in a van with a broken-down heater. "We have to up the quotient of PVC and eyeliner in the band... there are certainly a lot of leather pants on this tour."

Oddballs or not, 3 Inches Of Blood have received rave reviews nightly by pummelling the audience with a raging Judas Priest-meets-Slayer attack entirely unlike 69 Eyes and their H.I.M.-inspired low-key metal. Hooper and crew are still modestly shocked by the praise though.

"People come up to us and say that they just came to see us. It's flattering to hear people say that they spent all of this money on a ticket and then leave before Cradle Of Filth, but it proves we're doing something right."

Utilizing the tour as a means of introducing the world to tertiary effort Fire Up The Blades (Roadrunner), due out on May, 3 Inches are reinvigorated by a new lineup featuring guitarists Shane Clark and Justin Hagberg, bassist Nick Cates and drummer Alexei Rodriguez. Hooper and fellow longtime vocalist Cam Pipes are audibly excited about their input on the 10 songs that encompass Fire Up The Blades.

"We were nervous at first because all the musicians on the records are different from those on [2004's] Advance And Vanquish. We were wondering if we were gonna still sound like 3 Inches Of Blood. It doesn't… it's better. We've picked up the pace on some songs, so it's thrashier, with more double-kick, but also some laid-back rock songs. The fast songs are more pummelling than they used to be. We've been listening to too much black metal over the years, if there is such a thing."

While stepped up in ferocity, Hooper assures fans that the typical 3 Inches Of Blood topics of post-apocalyptic scenarios and beer-drinkin' are still prevalent. The album is completed aside from final artwork, and the band will tend to their own headlining tour once the stint with Cradle Of Filth winds down in late March. For now, though, they'll have to stick to opening slots.

"It doesn't matter as long as we're playing," says Hooper. "It's weird and refreshing to get back out on the road playing every night.

"When you're in the studio not playing shows for a couple of months, you're like, 'What the hell? Wasn't there something I was supposed to be doing tonight?' Not only that, but it seems like everyone in the band has a side project too… stuff like lounge music. After a few weeks of that, you're like, 'Fuck, I've gotta play some metal!'"

Here are remaining 3 Inches Of Blood's Canadian tour dates with Cradle Of Filth and 69 Eyes:

Feb. 8 Edmonton, AB @ Edmonton Events Centre
Feb. 9 Calgary, AB @ MacEwan Hall
Feb. 10 Kelowna, BC @ The Well
Feb. 11 Vancouver, BC @ Commodore Ballroom

3 Inches of Blood Recording New Album

3 Inches of Blood, the Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada based metal sextet is back in the studio recording their second Roadrunner album set for a Spring 2007 release. The still untitled album is the follow-up to 3 Inches of Blood’s RR debut, Advance and Vanquish. Famed, Grammy-winning drummer Joey Jordison of Slipknot is producing the new album. "Working with Joey has been awesome so far,” says singer/screamer Jamie Hopper. “He's made a seamless transition onto the 3 Inches of Blood drinking team and is pushing us harder than ever before. We're coming up with some killer stuff, which we can't wait for everyone to hear." Says Jordison, “I've been into 3IOB since Battle Cry Under a Winters Sun. I've wanted to work with them since. Unfortunately, timing didn't work out, but in the spring of 2006, timing was right. The new lineup is lethal, stellar musicians. We honed in on every beat riff and vocal to make this a legendary recording. The musical equivalent to a beheading.”

Darker, tighter and more dangerous than their debut, the new album features songs such as “Night Marauders,” “Goatrider’s Horde,” “Assassins of the Light” and “Black Spire.” With those song titles, the album is sure to be full of vivid imagery, masterful guitar acrobatics and the soaring vocals of Cam Pipes and Jamie Hooper that 3 Inches of Blood is known for. In January, the band will take to the road with Cradle of Filth and unleash the new material to their eagerly awaiting fans.

Since the release of Advance & Vanquish, 3 Inches of Blood have been plundering cities all around the world on tours with Avenged Sevenfold, Trivium, Chimaira, Exodus and others. The band most recently headlined a North American tour with Early Man and Bad Wizard in support. On October 21st, the members of 3 Inches of Blood lived out their dreams by opening up for legendary metal band Iron Maiden at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Los Angeles, CA.

The upcoming CD will be feature two new members – drummer, Alexie Rodriquez and bassist, Nick Cates.
