Below is our complete Blackguard news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Paul "Paul Ablaze" Zinay, frontman of Canada's Blackguard checked in with an extensive post-tour report from the band's rigorous touring in 2011 for the band's sophomore release "Firefight."
Zinay reported the following on the band's official Facebook Page:
"It’s been a while since the last time we’ve done a post-tour report and given the extensive year we’ve had and the time off we’ll be taking this feels like a good time to do one.
"2011 has been our busiest year to date. A new label home at Victory Records, our first music video (thank you Victory for the awesome production), a new record, Firefight, which came out in March, and 6 tours to support it (5 North American and 1 European). It’s safe to say we’ve had our hands full (I don’t have the official count but since January we’ve done close to 200 shows).
"It’s been an honour and a privilege to tour with so many amazing bands, many of which we never thought we would have the opportunity to share the stage with.
"So cheers to Deicide , Belphegor , Neuraxis , Pathology , Gigan Symphony X , Powerglove, Otep , Destrophy , Sister Sin , One Eyed Doll , Kamelot , Alestorm , The Agonist , Evergrey, Sabaton, The Absence, and all their crew for being amazing tour mates and we hope to one day tour with each one of them again. Also a special shout out to Overkill, D.R.I, Bonded By Blood , Ensiferum, Moonspell, and Finntroll for the awesome shows in Mexico City .
"For me it’s become less and less appropriate to judge a tour by attendance or merch sales. Yes those things are still important but a crappy show or poor merch night feels less significant when you’re surrounded by good people and get to watch great bands every night.
"This year we were fortunate enough to have been given many touring opportunities (which as you can see we took every advantage of) and has seen us on some of the most diverse touring line-ups we’ve ever been a part of. We’d like to extend our deepest thanks to all the fans of the bands we were out with for every circle pit, stage dive, head bang, and good time had even though you might not have known who the heck we were.
"And of course to our own loyal fans who have come out time and time again to see us play. I’m constantly in shock when I hear people telling me they’ve come to see us 3, 4 even 5 times in the last year. We can’t thank you enough for your ongoing support. We are incredibly fortunate to have each and every one of you on our side, pushing us on.
"These last two months on the road were some of the best and most challenging in our careers. Finally having a second shot at touring with Kamelot after last year’s cancelled tour was something we had been looking forward to for quite some time, and it was only made better with the inclusion of our new friends in Alestorm and old ones in The Agonist. However, the last minute absence of our brother and lead guitarist Kim proved a unique challenge. Calls went out, E-mails were sent (thank you Terry and Justine), and finally prayers were answered. I can’t stress enough how lucky we are to have so many amazing friends in this business who helped us out in our time of need, especially at such short notice (to everyone who made calls on our behalf, we owe you big!) What really attracted me to this show, in addition to the prospect of multiple interviews, was the sheer diversity of the tour package. It was assembled as a promotional tour by Victory Records to showcase some of their big and emerging rock/metal acts, and early on, I’d gathered from a mere glance at the bill that every band would sound substantially different. As it turns out, that wasn’t the half of it.
Happy coincidence placed me in the great state of Virginia, on my annual pilgrimage to my childhood roots, when Otep & Co. stopped at Jaxx in Springfield. I hadn’t been to Jaxx in eight years, so this show was more or less an extension of my nostalgic long-weekend romp through my past. To boot, Saturday, June 18th was beautiful and sunny, and the late afternoon and evening were shaping up to be quite pleasant too. I arrived early with my brother, wingman, and fellow metal fan Will “Fresh Prince” Smith as the line outside the door was beginning to form, and in due time, we’d knocked out a pair of killer interviews with Paul Ablaze and Ari Mihalopoulos – devoted fitness freaks and smiling frontmen for support acts Blackguard and Destrophy, respectively. Unfortunately, Otep herself was battling a sore throat, and her diplomatic tour manager Tristan was forced to cancel my planned interview so she could save her voice for that night’s performance. On the upside, I was promised a chance to make it up via telephone, and our names remained on the guest list.
While Jaxx hosts innumerable high-profile metal acts, it is not a large club – the capacity is considerably less than 1,000. That occasionally makes for a tight squeeze, but the atmosphere is pretty cozy and the layout is comfortably symmetrical. The small box office lobby at the venue’s rear corner leads to an open, dimly lit space with a long bar, flanked by two narrow corridors (along with two pairs of restrooms) that open up into the venue proper. At this point, you’ll find yourself standing on a raised platform that rings the stage in a horseshoe, with another bar in the center rear, and space for merch tables along the sides. Pretty standard, but streamlined and efficient. I enjoyed taking it all in and soaking up the lingering memories from my high school days, back before I could legally order a drink… That reminded me to get my ass to the bar and christen it. Blackguard has issued the following statement asking fans to donate to help the people of Japan after the recent disasters:
"Spending as much time as we do driving around the country gives us a lot of time to talk to each other. One of these talks was about how to make a small 'dent' in the pain that is being experienced right now in Japan with the earthquake and tsunami. Adding the fact that one of our managers was caught in the middle of the 2004 Asian Tsunami, this brought it all home for us.
"So we set up this way to make a donation and are asking all of our fans, other bands, promoters we play for and just about anyone else out there to feel free to donate as much as you can for such a special cause. When we return from our European tour the middle of April and before we leave for the Symphony X tour the following week, we will make an announcement of the full donation we are sending and give special name mention to the 10 highest donors. Thanks everybody!"
You can head over to this location to donate to the Japanese disaster relief fund.
