Delain Bassist Takes Streamer Cannon To The Crotch

Delain has issued the following announcement about the band's bassist being injured at a recent live show:

"Dear Delainers, we're sorry to let you know that Otto got injured during the show in Birmingham last night and has spent the night at the hospital as a result. He sadly won't be able to perform the gig in Manchester with us tonight. We have found a solution to play the gigs, so no shows will be cancelled, but please send Otto all the get-betterness in the world!"

Otto Schimmelpenninck had this to say about the experience:

"After what can be described as one of the most unpleasant adventures I've ever had to endure, we're back home again from the UK. As a lot of people are asking about my injuries and lots of friends know what happened already, I figured it would be best to share with you all. before all kinds of versions of this story start to circulate. Spoiler alert: you might want to read this another time if you were planning on having sex within the hour or so.

"As some of you know, we use 'streamer canons,' which shoot silver streamers into the audience, usually during The Gathering. We've been using this for ages without any problems at all, but in Birmingham things went wrong. More...

Drummer Sander Zoer Splits With Delain

Dutch symphonic metal act Delain announced that drummer Sander Zoer has split with the band due to major changes impacting his personal life. Ruben Israel will be taking his place permanently. Israel filled in for Zoer during the band's recent North American tour with Kamelot and also provided additional drum work for the band's latest album "The Human Contradiction."

The announcement from the band reads as follows: "Today we share with you the news that our drummer and friend Sander Zoer has decided to take a step back as Delain’s main man behind the drums, due to some major recent changes impacting his personal life. Though he will be stepping out of the limelight, we are happy that he will still be active for Delain behind the screens and our friendship will continue off-stage.

"Also, we are very happy to introduce to you Ruben Israel who will step in as Delain’s new drummer. Some of you will already know Ruben from when he joined us on our US tour with Kamelot last fall; this is where we got to know Ruben as the great guy and great drummer he is. We are confident that he will do an absolutely fantastic job and warmly welcome him to the Delain family!

"Ruben will continue where he started and will replace Sander behind the drums starting our upcoming US tour with Sonata Arctica this fall. Sander will be performing all festivals with Delain until September, except for 06-06-2014 Luxor Live at Arnhem where Ruben will fill in. There will be a special gig with Sander in his former hometown Groningen, on October 24th."

Sander Zoer commented: "8 years ago I took place on the Delain drum chair and this is the best choice I’ve ever made, but now the time has come to take some steps back. I need more time for my other activities in Delain behind the screens, to develop myself, other projects and jobs, and family.
However I will not completely disappear from the radar; you might see me behind the drums at some venues or festivals from time to time. I want to thank the Delain family for all the good times, and a very big thanks you to all fans around the world!" More...

Pit Stories: Delain Offers To Sign Your Bruises!

Every week we check in with bands from across the globe to get their most memorable Pit Stories. Today Charlotte Wessels of symphonic outfit Delain checks in to share the lessons she's learned over the years in the pit, and to offer to sign any Metalunderground reader's mosh pit bruises! Charlotte had this to say:

My best moshing days were probably when I was between the ages of 14 and 17, so I believe I owe a lot to moshpit etiquette. Still, I had to learn a lot of things the hard way. For example the fact that I should rather stagedive backwards then forwards (that time my boobs landed exactly in my grinning friend’s perfectly cupped hands) and that All Stars are NOT moshpit sensible shoes (that time I didn’t notice I’d been jumping through broken beer bottles for two hours. Blood. Blood everywhere). Also, the fact that many musicians find it an awkward request if you ask them to sign your fresh bruises after a perfectly friendly violent pit.

Now, Delain’s audience is not the mosh-till-you-bleed type of crowd, nor are we the projectile-vomit-over-your-audience type of band - just picking up on two recurring themes in this website’s stories :) - but if anyone wants their mosh pit bruises signed after a show, be my guest! You earned those!

Delain's new album "The Human Contradiction" saw official release today in North America via Napalm Records. Pick up your own copy right here and check out the "Stardust" music video below. More...

Delain Comments On New Album's Themes

Delain's Charlotte Wessels has checked in with the following statement about the band's new album:

“The title 'The Human Contradiction' is taken from one of my favorite books; Octavia E. Butlers trilogy Lilith’s Brood. A post-apocalypse story, in which the fact that humanity did not last is explained by our two most contradictory qualities; the fact that we are as a species both intelligent and hierarchic.

"This human contradiction causes an ‘us versus the others’ mentality, which in the book - as well as one could argue, in reality - proves to be a most self-destructive attitude. In a way, 'The Human Contradiction' presents a broadening and deepening of the lyrical concept of We Are The Others: ‘otherness’ and how people relate to this, has had my interest for years. Whether it is otherness within our species, so towards people who are perceived as ‘different’ by other people (which was 'We Are The Others' main focus) or in our attitudes towards non-human ‘others’, which is the lyrical addition made by our new record.”

"The Human Contradiction" will be released in North America on April 8th via Napalm Records and the album's track listing is as follows:

1. Here Come the Vultures
2. Your Body is a Battleground
3. Stardust
4. My Masquerade
5. Tell Me, Mechanist
6. Sing to Me

Delain Taps George Oosthoek

After previously announcing both Alissa White-Gluz and Marco Hietala as guests to appear on a new album, Delain has now issued this update about bringing on another guest vocalist:

"And yet another guest performance for our upcoming record 'The Human Contradiction.' We're proud to announce the return of: George Oosthoek.

"The collaboration between Delain and George goes way back! He already performed with us on our debut Lucidity and has often joined us at live gigs over the years. His brutal grunts don't find their equal easily, and since our upcoming record 'The Human Contradiction' in many ways re?ects back on our earlier work that featured his grunts, we are very excited about this reunion!"

George adds: "They tricked me!!!! Just kidding! It was a pleasure working with the girl and guys again. From what I've heard 'The Human Contradiction' is Delain's heaviest album up till now. It sounds massive. I'm honoured that they asked me to be part of it. I hope you will like it too. Rock on!!!"

Delain Announces New Guest Musician

After previously revealing that Alissa White-Gluz will be making an appearance on upcoming album "The Human Contradiction," now Delain has also announced Marco Hietala (Nightwish) as another guest musician. The band comments:

"We are very excited about the much anticipated return of vocal force Marco Hietala on our upcoming record. After our collaboration with Marco on our first two albums we can’t help but hearing his voice in some of the songs we write! We love his contributions on The Human Contradiction: Marco adds greatly to the power of 'Your Body Is A Battleground' as well as to the melancholia of 'Sing To Me.'"

Marco states: “I´ve done quite a few visitations on select albums during my career. Delain and their albums are among the most frequent. If you listen to their stuff, you´ll know why. Martijn and his group seem to have plenty to say both musically and lyrically. Keep it up mates!” More...

Delain Taps Alissa White-Gluz For New Album

Delain proudly announces the first guest vocalist for upcoming album "The Human Contradiction" will be Alissa White-Gluz. The band comments:

"We are really excited about Alissa’s addition to our new record! Alissa needs no introduction: we love her great, versatile and powerful vocal style and after spending time on the road with Alissa on our tour with Kamelot last fall, we simply needed her awesomeness Both Alissa’s clean vocals and signature screams are featured on the record’s finale 'The Tragedy Of The Commons.' We can’t wait to share the song with you!"

Alissa states: "After a couple days of touring with Delain, I HAD to go buy a CD or two. This band blew me away with their intelligent songs, energetic yet extremely precise live show and overall charisma. Sure enough, after buying an album at their merch table and listening to it on repeat while working out, my suspicions were confirmed: DELAIN IS AN AWESOME BAND! I'm very flattered and honored to participate in their upcoming album. I see Delain going very far, I wish them nothing but success and I'm glad to contribute my share!”

Within Temptation Names Support Act For Tour

Dutch symphonic act Within Temptation announced that the support act for the band's 2014 European tour in support of the yet untitled new release will be Dutch symphonic act Delain. The tour brings together the Westerholt brothers, Martijn of Delain and Robert of Within Temptation. Martiijn was an original member of Within Temptation, having played with the band on the first two releases "Enter" and "Mother Earth." He left the band due to illness shortly after the release of "Mother Earth" in 2000 and went on to form Delain in 2002.

Over the last couple of years, Robert had retired from touring with Within Temptation, though active on the studio release and composition front, so there is no indication yet as to whether the special occasion will reunite the brothers on stage.

Confirmed dates of the tour, along with a trailer, can be found over at this location.
