Dillinger Escape Plan Walks Back Breakup Talk

Less than 24 hours after announcing a "final" tour, The Dillinger Escape Plan was already backpedaling on just how "final" that would really be.

In an interview with Altpress.com, Greg Puciato commented that "No one in this band is dumb enough to say something’s ever really done" and "So the only thing you can do to make yourself not look like an idiot and not have to eat your own words is to leave it open for possibilities, because that’s reality. People are done when they’re dead."

He also goes on to mention that there are still "hundreds" of shows before the planned breakup even initaties. Excerpts from the interview can be read below.

Altpress: Do you have plans for life post-Dillinger?

Possibly, but who knows how we’re going to feel after the 200 more shows we still have to play. That’s what I mean: We’re about to announce our breakup, and I’m not even thinking about it. The only thing I care about is that the record is being announced and the release date is being announced and we’re finally going to have the fucking first song off the record for people to listen to properly, instead of a radio stream. I’m not thinking about a breakup that’s not going to initiate until hundreds of shows from now. And definitely, creatively, I don’t know what the fuck I’m gonna be thinking two years from now when we finally play our last show.

Altpress: So you’re leaving things open?

Well, yeah, because no one in this band is dumb enough to say something’s ever really done. If you’re smart and you look at every other band that’s done this, I mean, Guns ‘N Roses are fucking back, for Christ’s sake. Van Halen already came back. So the only thing you can do to make yourself not look like an idiot and not have to eat your own words is to leave it open for possibilities, because that’s reality. People are done when they’re dead.

The band will release new album "Disassociation" on October 14th, 2016 and first new track "Limerent Death" can be heard below. More...

Why Isn't There More Heavy Metal In Video Games?

Considering the huge potential for crossover between metal and gaming fans, it's always baffled me that there aren't more heavy metal focused video game soundtracks. Rather than going for sounds that make the player bang their heads and launch their controller through the television, most games – even highly action focused ones – tend to stick with more tepid ambient soundtracks based on electronica. Techno is about as “heavy” as most game soundtracks tend to get.

This week we're going to take a look at a handful of games that buck that trend and offer up honest-to-Lucifer extreme metal in their playlists. Not an exhaustive list (and we'll be looking at more in the future), this is just a few that are worth your time and are notable for their inclusion of tracks from excellent metal bands or for having original soundtracks rooted strongly in the metal tradition.

Brutal Legend

This one's a no-brainer, as it's essentially THE heavy metal video game, created solely to celebrate our beloved genre. Eddie may be a lowly roadie, but through the power of metal (and a battleax, wicked car, and some magic powers) he can annihilate the goths, please the gods, and get the girl (or two).

Although it seems like a gimmick to get heavy music fans interested, the gameplay is actually really solid and revolves around three different styles: strategy large-scale combat as a general over an army, open world GTA car driving shenanigans, and elements of combat-heavy action games like God of War or Dante's Inferno

The game features more than 100 metal tracks (some of which have to be unlocked in-game) covering a huge range of sub-genres with everything from In Flames to Cradle Of Filth, along with a whole lot of classics from the likes of Motorhead and Judas Priest.

The Dillinger Escape Plan Working On Album

If you loved the holy living shit out of "One Of Us Is The Killer" (reviewed here) like we did (managing to make the runner-up spot for album of the year in our 2013 metal awards), you'll be pleased to know The Dillinger Escape Plan is well into the process of working on a new album.

Some info has now finally leaked through an interview with Ben Weinman conducted by TheRockPit.net. Excerpts from the interview follow.

TheRockPit: It's been about 2 years since the last album so are you guys maybe thinking of doing the next one?

Ben: Yeah we're already writing! We're well onto a new record and the writing process and we're going into the studio around November so we're already getting it going.

TheRockPit: So I guess with the success of the last album, do you feel any kind of pressure to maybe outdo that one?

Ben: I don't think we really try to think about it too much, we just start moving and start making stuff. It's like just take what you got and get to work and at some point you just got to write the first riff and not look back. We just want to make sure it always moves us, We're proud of pretty much every single thing we ever put out. We've always put 110% into it and we've always been the kind of band where some of our music may seem clever but that's not the most important part. The most important part is that it has emotion and energy so I like to think what differentiates us from some of the technical bands is that everything we do has to feel like it can't just be interesting, it actually has to move us. We have to be able to picture us playing it live and feeling it and so the carthartic nature of our music is the most important thing. So with that in mind it's not about beating something or topping it, it's about maintaining that level of emotion and really feeling or believing that we're creating something honest. And that's the challenge, we have to be in the right state of mind to do it, we can't just force it.

TheRockPit: How is the writing process for writing new music? Especially for you as the guitar player, how do you come up with ideas and is it a very collaborative effort with the whole band or do you do your own thing and then come together later on? More...

Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 39

This week, we at the MetalUnderground.com Official Podcast are proud to present two fresh songs by Letters To The Blind, a brand new self-described “hybrid metal” act from Dayton, Ohio.

Letters To The Blind began as a long-distance recording project in 2011 between vocalist Chaz Bond and guitarist Blaine Gordon - former members of a band called BioGenesis - when the latter was living in Florida. The group was officially formed when Gordon returned to Ohio this past summer, and rounded out with drummer C.J. Jones and bassist Randy Walton.

Letters To The Blind play an invigorating mixture of melodic death, technical, and progressive metal, and elicits comparisons to Canada’s Into Eternity and Sweden’s Evergrey. The songs “Letters To The Blind” and “Creed Of Honor” (heard at sign-off, so stay tuned) receive major thumbs up from co-hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure), minor flaws aside.

Then Kevin examines a recent controversy involving accusations of stolen artwork, this time by Los Angeles melodic hardcore act The Ghost Inside. Some are claiming that the quill pen on the cover of the new album “Dear Youth” bears too close a resemblance to a similar image on the cover of The Dillinger Escape Plan’s “One Of Us Is The Killer.” [2013] A ripoff on the level of the recent Avenged Sevenfold - Overkill fiasco, or the simple use of a common motif? Tune in for Kevin’s opinion, as well as his review of “Dear Youth” itself.

Finally, Mike offers his extensive, detailed reaction to Machine Head’s new monster “Bloodstone & Diamonds,” the Bay Area metal giants’ eighth studio album and debut on Nuclear Blast Records. Full disclosure up front: as a confirmed “Head Case,” he’s crazy about it, but it took a few listens for him to get there. Stay tuned to find out why.

Listen in here, and don’t forget to subscribe via iTunes or RSS feed.

Party Smasher Inc. Interviews Brent Hinds

Party Smasher Inc. - the musician / artist / photography site created by Dillinger Escape plan's Ben Weinman - has released a new video interview with Mastodon's Brent Hinds, which can be seen below. Party Smasher also comments:

"Mastodon started in 1999; a couple of years after the Dillinger Escape Plan. Fifteen years later, Brent Hinds and Ben Weinman surprisingly still bear each other enough to start a brand new project together as GTO, the Giraffe Tongue Orchestra.

"For this 1-on-1 between the two, Brent Hinds recollects how he was just listening to 'devil music' for his parents before he became one of Satan's worst rejects himself a few years later with Mastodon, and the upcoming GTO. " More...

"Mads Mikkelsen is the Danish actor currently killing it (literally) as Hannibal Lector on the hit show Hannibal. Perhaps it was his bloody eyed role in the James Bond film Casino Royale, that showed us just how creepy this guy could be. What most people don't know, however, is that he was originally a gymnast and dancer. The guy can KICK!

"Check out this one-on-one with Elliot of Little Punk People where Mads talks about his love for classic rock, horror movies, and getting over the nerves of playing one of our generation's most iconic villains." More...

Bein Weinman Launches Party Smasher Inc.

Party Smasher Inc. has finally unveiled it's online destination here as a one-stop portal for musicians, photographers, illustrators, fashion designers, and industry mavericks of all stripes.

The shared principle that unites this otherwise diverse collection of contributors and curators is simple: self-determination. Party Smasher Inc. exists to enable likeminded cultural saboteurs to empower themselves with the DIY spirit.

“I was well into my twenties, with a college degree and a corporate job, playing music with no intention of generating money or some massive fanbase,” explains Party Smasher Inc. founder Ben Weinman, best known as the guitarist of The Dillinger Escape Plan. “Before I had even realized it, I was making 100% of my living creating art. How did this happen? Because we ignored the ‘rules.’ It wasn’t until I started living my artistic life with that mindset that I became a responsible creator – one who could move people through honest expression. And that is what Party Smasher Inc. is all about. We are here to celebrate the artists that are following their own path, undeterred by the trends.”

The following press release was also issued about the new site: "The battle-hardened creative industry collective behind Party Smasher is made up of visionaries from the full spectrum of artistic disciplines. All of them built their reputations with a combination of talent, presentation and workaholic fervor. More...
