Halcyon Way Recording Album, Parts With Drummer

Based in Atlanta, Georgia and founded in 2001, Halcyon Way is an excellent example of blue-collar work ethic, self-reliant bootstrapping, and hard work & perseverance in spite of nearly insurmountable odds.

The band has released three albums worldwide through Nightmare Records/Sony RED, and performed in a dozen countries and counting. Currently the band is working on a fifth album and just inked a deal with Alpha Omega Management. The band comments:

“HW are super stoked to be working with Tim and Alex at Alpha Omega and the rest of the crew, and believe that this new partnership will help HW climb up to the next level. We’re hard at work writing the follow up to our 2014 album 'Conquer,' and hope to be in the studio by the end of the summer. We have a few super cool tours in early stages of negotiations, and we hope to make some big announcements on that front soon.”

Alpha Omega Management adds: "We're so thrilled to welcome these hard working guys in Halcyon Way to our family! Their attitude on stage talks a clear language; these guys are here to stay and conquer new frontiers! Stay tuned for next announcements!"

Furthermore Halcyon Way announces that the band has parted ways with long-time drummer Ernie Topran, and announce the replacement for upcoming dates:

"We are sad to say that we have amicably parted ways with our longtime friend and drummer Ernie Topran, who has been with us for nearly a decade behind the drums. He’s a great player and friend of us, there was no drama at all, and we wish him the absolute best in the next chapter of his musical career. He’s been a huge part of the HW family for a long time, and his unique drumming style helped take our material to the next level. More...

ProgPower USA XVI, Part 1: Mid-Week Mayhem

Sunday....September 20, 2015....the alarm blared at 4:45pm. I guess I forgot to change it from the normal weekday. I sit up - still reeling from the post-ProgPower USA plague, a disease that seems to permeate from the long hours and constant human communication/contact over a four day annual ritual - or rite of passage for the newbie virgins. I reach for another cough drop and open unlock my phone to reveal this morning’s round of Facebook notifications.

Oh...a tag on a video from Dragonland’s second set at ProgPower USA...yes, I said “second.” Why a tag? Well, as it turned out, yours truly was afforded the incredible honor of joining the band on stage for “The Black Mare.” As I sit and contemplate just how that weekend transpired - all the changes, the problems Glenn and Jen Harveston and all involved had to endure in keeping a solidified lineup in the face of the dreaded USCIS - there really is a magic that happens in Atlanta. No matter how it turns out...it never ceases to raise the bar each and every year. More...

Persefone Dropped From ProgPower USA

ProgPower USA promoter Glenn Harveston announced that Andorra's Persefone is the latest band to be cancelled from the 2015 roster, in part due to visa issues. The USCIS has reared its ugly head causing the most issues since 2009 for the annual festival.

Harveston explains: "Unfortunately, this situation is not a simple as the Morgana Lefay cancellation, although the visa process is once again at the root of things. It is no secret now the USCIS center in Vermont is running 4-6 weeks behind their normal schedule assuming there is no RFE (request for evidence). We technically still have three weeks we can wait to receive these visas and then schedule the mandatory interviews. However, Persefone booked a European tour in June with the assumption they would have completed the interviews prior to kicking off their tour. They cannot complete any interviews while on tour. I requested they wait until after the tour and then complete the interviews as there was still possibly time. I was informed the day job of one of the band members prevents him from traveling to Madrid during that time frame, especially with no specific date to schedule currently. Thus, I am left with no choice but to cancel the band now.

"I know these types of explanations are frustrating to you, the fans. There is simply nothing that can be done. In the immortal words of the great American poet, Jimmy Buffett, 'Breathe in..Breathe Out..Move On.' Please know that there is no animosity between the band and myself. I truly understand and empathize with their situation. I wish the band nothing but the best and will continue to support them in the future."

Within hours of the announcement, Canada's Unleash the Archers was added to the bill. The latest roster list is as follows: More...

Jeff Scott Soto To Replace Morgana Lefay At PPUSA

Legendary hard rock/metal vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (Talisman, T.S.O., ex-Yngwie Malmsteen) has been confirmed for the sold-out ProgPower USA festival this year in Atlanta, Georgia, replacing Sweden's Morgan Lefay, who became the latest victim of the USICS Visa System. In a special performance, Jeff will celebrate his entire 30 year career at the festival performing songs from many of his bands along the way, including Talisman, Yngwie Malmsteen, Axel Pell Rudi, W.E.T., Rock Star, as well as his solo releases.

Jeff stated: "Having known about the ProgPower USA fest for years, I'm proud to be invited to present the ONLY US show this year with my 30th anniversary show! Me and the boys couldn't be more excited to rock Atlanta!"

Promoter Glenn Harveston added: "I’m honestly still in awe Jeff has graciously stepped up to the plate to help us out at the last minute. I can say I have never had such an amazing and quick conversation with an artist when it comes to booking a band. That is not only a sign of a true professional, but someone wanting to perform for our festival audience. Nothing fires up this crowd more than knowing a legendary name like Jeff Scott Soto actually wants to be in Atlanta. I'd also like to thank Sun Hill Management for the great response time."

Jeff Scott Soto recently took part in the sold out T.S.O./Savatage two stage spectacle at Wacken this past weekend. His latest solo release "Inside the Vertigo," under the monikor Soto, was released by earMusic back in January. More...

Pit Stories: The Unwanted Pit

A few weeks back Halycon Way checked in with us to share a Pit Story about a massive wall of death at a Lamb of God show, and now the Atlanta prog metal group is back for another tale of pit shenanigans.

This week the group shares a tale of an unwanted pit failing to erupt at the NAMM convention. Halcyon Way had this to say about the event:

So, it's the Winter NAMM show in January of 2013. I'm at the Grove in Anaheim for an industry-only show there, and it's Exodus, Prong, and Jeff Loomis playing. I'm with a group of friends - other musicians, manufacturers, our producer Lasse Lammert is there, it's a good group. The Grove is a good sized venue, and it's probably about half full, so there's a pretty fair amount of room in the crowd area too, because the venue's floor is kinda segmented, with 20 foot sections going up from the stage. Basically, you have a 15-20 foot deep section the width of the venue, then there's a couple of steps up and a short wall, and there's another level a couple feet higher. I think there's 3-4 total. Keep in mind that this is an industry-only event, and that the general public was not allowed in. You had to get a pass from Dean Guitars in the NAMM show at the convention center.

So, during Prong's set there's a small pit breaking out in the lowest level, and that's cool. The people that didn't want to pit were up higher watching the show....until some drunk numbnuts decides he's going to start one 2 levels up. And the douche didn't even know how to really do a pit, he just decided to drunkenly stagger from one side of the venue to the other, and ram into as many people as he could. Women? Sure. Dudes? Of course. Mom with baby? He would have if there were one there. The guy was being a complete toolbag, just ramming into anyone at random, hitting them from behind, etc.

Halcyon Way Premieres New Track

Atlanta progressive metal act Halcyon Way premiered the new track "World Comes Undone" over at Guitar World.com at this location (also in the player below). The song appears on the upcoming new album "Conquer," which is out on August 19th in North America via Nightmare Records, and September 19th in Europe via Massacre Records. A review for the album can be found over at this location.

Guitarist Jon Bodan commented on the track: "'World Comes Undone' is one of my favorite tracks on 'Conquer.' To me, it’s one of the riffier tracks, and it hits all of the high points we’re known for — the thrashy riffs, lots of nice groove changes, a big chorus and lots of sexy vocal harmonies, plus a tasty guitar solo.

"The intro riff has a nice thrashy feel, with some diminished intervals and harmonies. When the verse kicks in, it goes into a Pantera sort of groove, and the guitar riff is deep in the pocket but has a cool, technical streak.

"The chorus has a nice groove as well; it’s good and catchy, and it has some interesting layers to it. Once you get to the bridge, we modified the intro riff a bit to give it more of a groove, and the solo is very vocal and slinky. I like to make sure my solos take you somewhere and give you some melody you can latch onto but have them move and build up."

The track listing for "Conquer" is:

1. Conquer
2. Web Of Lies (see music video)
3. Conceived In Torment
4. Home (see lyric video)
5. World Comes Undone

Pit Stories: Crashing Into The Wall Of Death

It's Tuesday again, which means it's time for more Pit Stories!

This week we head into one of the most infamous, bone crunching, bruise-inducing pit activities: the dreaded wall of death.

Atlanta prog metal band Halcyon Way shared this story with us about a wall of death during a Lamb of God set:

One of my all time favorite bands is Lamb of God, and if you know Lamb of God at all then you know that they are known for doing a wall of death at the end of their show. So I was attending their show in Atlanta at the Tabernacle, and the time came for them to play "Black Label" which everyone knows is when the wall happens. So people started lining up, my best friend and I decided that we were gonna do it! So Randy Blythe started counting, when he hit 4, both sides of the room flew towards each other.

In the confusion I lost sight of my best friend and just began fending for my life it seemed! I saw some people on the ground, but saw that they were being helped up and didn't think much of it. It wasn't until I saw videos on Youtube later on that I realized that the side of the wall we were on had completely collapsed under the pressure from the other side and that we were mere feet away from being right in the middle of it, with no idea that it was even happening! It was definitely a blast though and I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Halcyon Way's forthcoming album "Conquer" is due to drop on August 19th in North America via Nightmare Records and August 23rd in Europe via Massacre Records.

To get a preview of the album, you can stream the track "Home" at this location or watch the "Web of Lies" music video here. More...
