"some music was meant to stay underground..."

Mythical Beast

From: TX, United States
Last Known Status: Active

Band members Corinne Sweeney (vocals, percussion) and Jeremiah Cowlin (guitar) met and fell in love in Olympia, WA then moved to New Orleans in 2003. Aaron Hawn (bass) moved from Chicago to New Orleans in 2004 and met the other two at a Halloween party in the Bywater district (all three are Libras).

Self taught musicians, Mythical Beast's early music was defined by their limitations - at times the only thing holding initial performances together would be their uncanny ability to listen to one another. With the flooding that followed in the wake of hurricane Katrina, the band was forced to evacuate and relocated to Austin, TX in 2005. They pooled their FEMA money and rented a small compound on Austin's east-side where they spent hours cultivating their sound - a sonic, 'doom-soul' drone with little indication of beginning or end. After a drunken and horrible (albeit creative) year in Austin, the band relocated to Kansas City in 2006. They joined a burgeoning underground music scene that was developing around The Pistol, an independent venue located in the city's industrial West Bottoms, alongside fellow Kansas City musicians: Ssion, Expo '70, Matt Hill, and Aaron Martin.

Mythical Beast Releases Label Debut Album "Scales"

"Scales" is the label debut of Kansas City based trio Mythical Beast on Greg and Jessica Weeks' Language of Stone imprint. The album was recorded and mixed in May of 2008 in 10 days at Greg Weeks' Hexham Head studio located in Philadelphia. It was an entirely analog recording process. The album was recorded using Weeks' 1970's 2" MCI 24 track tape machine and mixed on his 1980's DDA console.

In Spring 2007, the band flew to New York to play the first annual Diamond Days Fest with Sunburned Hand of the Man, These Are Powers Marissa Nadler, etc. where Greg Weeks saw their set and invited the band to join his label. Soon thereafter, Mythical Beast was signed to Weeks' imprint, Language of Stone.
