Sweden is a country that often gets brought up in metal circles. The Scandinavian nation in between Norway and Finland has become known as one of the more liberal countries in the world, with a highly developed welfare state, one of the highest life expectancy and satisfaction rates in the world, a long list of famous names such as scientist Alfred Nobel, writer August Strindberg and one of cinema's most revered directors, Ingmar Bergman, as well as, quite frankly, one of the sexiest accents in Europe. So why then, with so much going for it, has the country developed such a talent for extreme music, death metal in particular? We may never know, but we can be grateful that they do, otherwise we wouldn't have such classic groups as today's featured outfit, Grave.
Grave as we know them, began life in 1986 under the name Corpse, in Visby on the Swedish island of Gotland. They recorded one demo, "Black Dawn" the same year before changing their moniker to the now familiar, Grave in 1988, in time for the release of their second demo, "Sick Disgust Eternal." They released a string of demos while building up a live reputation, which eventually caught the attention of German label Century Media, who signed the band in 1991 and included them on a compilation featuring some of the most exciting young bands of the time, including Asphyx and fellow Swedes, Unleashed and Tiamat. Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.
Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...

Swedish death metal unit Grave just finished the recording for new album, "Out Of Respect For The Dead."
Three years have passed since the release of Grave's last opus, "Endless Procession Of Souls," that was followed by a European headlining tour together with Sonne Adam, the release of the vinyl-only "Morbid Ascent" EP and another tour together with label mates Entombed A.D.
Since autumn 2014, Grave has been working nonstop on the follow-up to "EPOS." Now, "Out Of Respect For The Dead" is finally done, and it's easily one of the angriest and most evil albums of the band's career. Check out the brand new track "Redeemed Through Hate" and judge for yourself below.
"Out Of Respect For The Dead" will be released through Century Media Records in October. More album details and news to be revealed soon. The Grave lineup consists of:

Oliver Withöft, co-owner of independent record label Century Media, passed away on January 20th, 2014 after falling ill several months ago. He was 49. Robert Kampf, Century Media founder, comments:
"I have lost my best friend of 32 years and my business partner of 24. Although the unthinkable already happened three days ago, I am still in a state of utter shock. Oliver Withöft leaves a space that cannot be filled for all who held him dear. He was a tremendous father, husband, son and friend and will be terribly missed. I will always treasure him in my heart as the witty, brilliant and altogether great person he was. Farewell Oliver, see you on the other side and in our next life."
The following press release was also issued by Century Media:
"Born in Dortmund, Germany in 1964, Withöft studied linguistics, business and history in both Germany and the UK. Robert Kampf started Century Media Records 25 years ago simply to create a suitable label home for his own band, Despair. He was looking for a trustworthy and strong partner to lead the company with and found this person in his best friend and fellow musician Oliver Withöft, who joined the company eighteen months later, sharing the same love and passion for music, and metal in particular. Since that very day, these two friends developed one of the most important independent record labels on the planet. Today the company has around 100 people on payroll in Dortmund, London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Melbourne and the Netherlands.
"A lot of musical careers were developed over the years: Lacuna Coil, Shadows Fall, Suicide Silence, In This Moment, Otherwise, Iced Earth, Die Broilers, Arch Enemy and Heaven Shall Burn are just a few of them. Century Media became a brand name recognized across the world. Oliver Withöft was always the strategic, legal and financial mind behind the organization. He was not only a strong fighter for the company, but also a very intelligent and forward-thinking leader. When the music industry drastically changed in the '90s, he was the first to think about new ways to adapt to the needs and challenges of the rapidly-changing market. We have lost a great man with an amazing sense of humor, a warrior, and an overall very human being. Oliver leaves behind a wife, Judith, and their three daughters." More...

This year marks 15 years of Obscene Extreme and to celebrate the occasion the organizers of the festival decided to go all out in extreme style by hosting an additional three festivals in three additional continents.
Over the last few months Obscene Extreme has appeared in Mexico City - Mexico, Jakarta - Indonesia, and Melbourne - Australia. There has been much success but also some failures and after some time at home to reflect on the adventure the man behind the whole idea, Curby, has spoken about the experience on the run up to the final Obscene Extreme Festival in Czech Republic this July:
"Hello freaks!!! This is Curby/obscene... I believe that you our loyal OEF fans have followed us on our tour so you probably know what happened but for those who haven't I would like to sum up our first ever OEF World tour. When I was pondering over our plans for the World tour I was really full of enthusiasm (and actually I still am). I hoped for something new but our first world volume was a really tough game, not only financially but also emotionally. It's very difficult to understand how big differences are between Europe, Mexico and Indonesia... I knew it would be different, but so much? What can you do if you pay everything in advance as in Mexico and people don't work at all? Not much... when you read my statements for every continent, you`ll understand me... More...
The Barge To Hell is just days away from departure and final band announcements are being made. The cruise sets sail Monday, December 3rd, 2012 from Miami, FL to Nassau, Bahamas and returns on Friday, December 7th, 2012.
Just announced are Novembers Doom, Vital Remains, Brujeria and underground acts Abiotic, Zanthropya Ex, and Dark Sermon. The organizers also report that both the German and Canadian incarnations of Necronomicon will be in attendance.
With the announcement comes some bad news that Six Feet Under has had to cancel their appearance due to a scheduling conflict with their studio and needing to have their new album delivered in time.
You can still book a trip on the Barge To Hell.
The lineup is as follows: More...
The organizers of the Barge To Hell cruise have issued the following announcement about confirming Exodus, Seita, Havok, and Necronomicon:
"Let the world-wide EXODUS for BARGE TO HELL begin! Paying tribute to their global customer base, they've also added: SEITA from Brazil and The Netherlands, HAVOK from the USA, NECRONOMICON from Germany and HEADCRUSHER from Colombia!
"Barge To Hell's customer service team is working around the clock to get everything ready for those that are booked to perform online check-in. Booked passengers can expect to receive their online check-in invitation on Monday.
"The madness begins on December 3rd, when 40 of the most extreme Metal Bands and 2,000 headbangers from all over the world will go to the Caribbean to take over a luxury cruise ship for a 5 day and 4 night trip to the undead! See each of the 40 bands play two live shows on two different days. That's 80 shows with unrestricted festival access to the three stages, each with it's own unique atmosphere:
- The luxurious 'A Chorus Line' theater where they spare no expense to have the benches removed on the floor. Because at a Metal show, who actually wants assigned seating in front of the stage?
- The cozy 'Spectrum' that gives you the real club feeling.
- And their jewel: The open air stage on the pool deck. The biggest festival stage to sail the Oceans.
"You can also get all your memorabilia signed at the Meet & Greet sessions. Be part of their infamous Metal Karaoke and many other special activities with the Artists. And last, but not least: Don't forget that they have bars on board that never close! What are you waiting for? You might even need a vacation from this vacation when all is said and done."
The following 35 bands have now been confirmed: More...
Departing in less than a month, two more bands have been announced for the Barge to Hell: Grave and Bonded By Blood. The Barge to Hell sets sail Monday, December 3rd, 2012 from Miami, FL to Nassau, Bahamas and returns on Friday, December 7th, 2012.
The currently announced lineup is as follows: More...
If Satan needed a house band in Hell, he could certainly call on Morbid Angel. Thanks to his guitar acrobatics, journalists have long dubbed band-founder Trey Azagthoth as the Eddie Van Halen of death metal. When the group emerged in 1989 with their first proper release, few, if any, could match the Mercury-footed speed of Pete Sandoval’s double-bass-blasting feet. The groove, mind-blowing skill and heretical lyrics and imagery landed the group at the top of the extreme metal world. Massive touring cycles transformed the band into one of the most prolific, underground touring acts of the 1990s. Their devilish music found its largest audience opening for Slayer and Pantera in the beginning of the new millennium.
After the Pantera gigs, Morbid Angel largely stayed out of the limelight. An opening stint for Soulfly in 2005 was the only North American tour I recall since Pantera. Assumingly, much of the crowd in attendance at Backstage Live in San Antonio had not seen the group in seven or even twelve years. Many long-time fans bemoaned “Illud Divinium Insanus,” the group’s first album in eight years, as the lowest point of artistry in the group’s near-thirty-year career. In fact, many of these fans felt the album was so poor they wouldn’t even venture out to see the band play, which is such a shame because they missed one of the best extreme metal tours of the year!
