You better not miss this fucking extraordinary, blasphemous death/black metal package! ENGLAND IS GOING TO HELL WITH US ON 7TH DECEMBER 2015!!”

Ordinarily, when a news story provides the inspiration to choose which band will be featured in the Sunday Old School column, it's because the group has split, reformed or a member has passed away. However, this week, the choice was made when a police officer in Florida was fired for joining a well known death metal band on stage and singing along to their song, "Let the Killing Begin." The quartet in question hails from Providence, Rhode Island and goes by the name of Vital Remains.
The group was forged in 1988 by guitarist, Paul Flynn, who was soon joined in his endeavour by guitarist Butch Machado, vocalist Mike Flynn, bassist Tom Supkow, and drummer Chris Dupont. Mike Flynn and Butch Machado did not last long however, as Vital Remains decided they needed better musicians and replaced the duo with Jeff Gruslin and Tony Lazaro respectively. Spurred on by the writing partnership of the two guitar players, the group became one of the most popular live acts in their local scene and after recording two demos, "Reduced to Ashes" and "Excruciating Pain," they caught the attention of French label, Thrash Records, who signed them up. Deathcore was the chosen style of music for day two of Texas Independence Fest in Austin, Texas. Whitechapel headlined and Oceano and Boris The Blade were two of the bands providing support. All those bands played the main stage, the Garage Stage. Before getting into this this stage, I would like to look at some of the small stage, Control Room Stage. Metalcore seems to be alive and well in Temple, Texas, a town located an hour north of Austin. Insonomist out of Temple played yesterday’s show and In The Trench played today. Vocalist Steven Harding’s refrain was infectious and the band got the small crowd in motion. More...

Vital Remains singer Brian Werner disapproved of a (non inverted) crucifix hanging above the stage during the bands set at the Haven Lounge in Orlando, Florida. He proceeded to take it down and lead the crowd in a "Fuck Jesus" chant while the club's owner storms the stage to counteract him.
Check out now the hilarious scene below.

While Vader' headlining set will definitely include selections from 2011’s "Welcome To The Morbid Reich," frontman/guitarist Peter W. states the band will reach as far back as 1994’s "Sothis" EP to satisfy long-time fans.

Blacktooth Entertainment and Dungeon Works Productions, along with the Heavy Metal Music Association of Canada (H.M.M.A.C.), present the American death metal band Vital Remains' upcoming Eastern Canadian tour. The following press release was issued about the run:
"With a new release in the works, Vital Remains will return to Canada with 24 years of experience, high-class musicianship, and a dedication towards their musical style that is hardly rivaled today and continuously slams a spiked fist into the face of every trend rearing its ugly head.
"In 2007, the extreme metal titans Vital Remains released 'Icons Of Evil,' a vicious slab of blasphemy that sent fear in the heart of the masses. That much-anticipated album marked the group's second recording with Glen Benton (Deicide) on vocals and was produced in the Florida based Mana Recording Studios by the renowned Erik Rutan (Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal, Goatwhore). Once again, that album was completely written by the group’s founder Tony Lazaro (rhythm guitars & bass) with Dave Suzuki handling the lead guitar, drums and backing vocal duties. More...

Dave Suzuki, former guitarist for Vital Remains (1997-2009) and Ray McCaffrey (Sin Of Angels/Grief) have resurfaced with a new musical project callefd Churchburn. Dave comments, “Churchburn is very different from Vital Remains. Ray and I wanted to do something slow and heavy...just something pummeling to the listener.”
You can check out a song from the band titled "Kneel Upon Charred Remnants" in the player below. The following press release was also issued:
"Churchburn is the musical collaboration between two of the undergrounds masters of misery Dave Suzuki, best known for his mesmerizing guitar work and brutal drumming in Vital Remains and Ray McCaffrey, who carved out sonic drum patterns for Sin Of Angels and Grief. The two have set out to share with the world their love of the riff, not only the heaviest but also the most haunting. Each song is crafted with the most sinister of intent. Churchburn wants the listener to feel a true sense of dread as the song progresses. This is only the beginning..." More...
Iconic German thrash trio, Destruction, will kick off its North American 30th year anniversary tour this weekend with shared direct support from Vital Remains and Warbringer (who will be alternating each night) plus Pathology. An updated list of all the confirmed shows can be seen below.
Commented Destruction frontman and bassist, Schmier, “A killer package for old-school thrash and death metal freaks! This may be the best set list we’ve ever had – the essence of thrash metal history united with our new anthems. We’ll have more classics than ever in the set, more from the first records for sure.
"Can’t wait to hit the road again!!! Some North American cities have a great audience for this old school sound again, and it wasn’t always like that. The main intention for this second North American tour within a year is that we could not play all markets that we wanted to book last time. Now, we’ll play some new places and return to those cities that gave us a great welcome last year like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Montreal. Warbringer are a perfect match to a Destruction bill. They are one of the best new thrash bands and keep our ‘80s spirit alive. It will be great to have them with us! We’ve played with Vital Remains before; awesome guys and a brutal band. They bring a good variety into the billing. Thrash/death metal is always the best mix, that’s why Pathology complete the show!”
Destruction is touring in support of its 11th studio release, "Day Of Reckoning" (Nuclear Blast) - the first album to feature new drummer, Vaaver (Indukti, ex-Unsun) – which debuted at #54 on the Hard Music Albums chart, #58 on the New Artist/Heatseekers Album chart, and #143 on the Independent Current Albums chart the week following its release in March 2011. The album entered Germany’s Media Control chart at #95. More...
Warbringer has just completed a 7-week North America tour supporting metal titans Iced Earth and Symphony X, but the group is ready to be back on the road again soon. For this next North American tour, the band will join Destruction, Vital Remains, and Pathology from May 8th to June 3rd, and after that, Warbringer will appear at various high-profile Summer festival appearances in Europe. Vocalist John Kevill checked in to comment about these upcoming shows:
"Hey all! Checking in at the end of the ICED EARTH and SYMPHONY X tour. We had a great time with those guys, there was a slew of incredible shows with awesome heavy metal fans in abundance, and a bunch of good times with both of those fine bands! Shame to say goodbye to them, but we're on our way home now to recuperate before beginning out next tour with German thrash metal legends DESTRUCTION, on their 30th anniversary tour! We never rest long, the war rages on! We'll see you guys out on the road again in May, prepare to be annihilated!
"We're also very excited about the way our summer is shaping up. We have about a dozen European festivals confirmed and we look forward to sharing some amazing experiences ravaging the large crowds, big stages and all the fun times to be had with all the other great bands also performing."
The upcoming Warbringer tour dates are as follows: More...
Earlier this year, San Diego’s brutal death metal/slam outfit Pathology completed a successful 3-week west coast headlining tour that also went down into Mexico for 4 shows.
“Our west coast tour was fun and successful,” states drummer Dave Astor. “We really got to play some smaller markets on the run and I was happy to see some old and new fans come out, especially to some of these more rural areas that we’ve never played. Hopefully we can do this as intensive west coast run once a year.”
Next on the band’s agenda is more touring in support of last fall’s "Awaken to the Suffering" album. Pathology took the initiative of doing headlining shows leading to a request for a slightly different type of tour this April with Rose Funeral and The World We Knew, getting into some alternative venues on the east coast and Midwest.
“I’m excited for this,” continues Dave. “We’ve been proud to tour with some of our influences but we also know our band appeals to a different and younger audience so we’ll be bringing some brutal, slamming death metal to these shows.” More...

The July 3rd show of the Metalunderground.com sponsored Origin, Hate Eternal, Vital Remains and Abysmal Dawn tour has been moved to The Miramar Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. All tickets for the Madison show will be honored. This is now an ALL AGES show.
Origin is currently on the road supporting their fifth studio album and Nuclear Blast debut, "Entity," which is out now in North America.
A rush of cool air relieved my over-taxed pores when I entered Jackalopes. I walked past a girl wearing a Danzig shirt posing for a picture on top of a statue of a giant jackrabbit with horns—the fabled Jackalope. I not only sought shelter from the one-hundred-three-degree inferno that blazed outside, it helped me kill time before Emo’s opened its door a hour-and-a-half later.
While devouring one of the juiciest burgers in town, I noticed other metal heads wearing various death metal shirts entering the establishment. Located just a couple of blocks from the venue, the metal-friendly bar and grill catered to those awaiting the coming death metal onslaught.
In route to the bar, I noticed one of the more conspicuous fans on the other side of the street. Wearing corpse paint that may have been patterned from an old Satyricon or Gorgoroth photo, this fan’s black attire seemed in defiance of the sun’s powerful rays. I guess nobody told this guy he was going to a death metal show. Also, the heat surely streaked his makeup, most likely stinging his eyes. What he lacked in brains he made up for in dedication, though (even though this was a death metal show).
Three or four people stood near the touring vans outside the venue when I walked past Emo’s at around 6:30. The line grew to the front of the next venue when I returned at 7:30. Soon, the line grew to the end of the block—a good sign for the five bands due on stage. The venue opened close to its scheduled time of 8 PM. More...
