This is the story of why I left a metal show early for the first time in my life.
While I’m not a serial show-goer, I have easily been to dozens, if not over a hundred, metal shows since my metal-loving life got going back in the mid-1990s, and I have always had a rule that I followed more closely than the ins and outs of “Debbie Does Dallas” – don’t leave early. Even if I was tired, drunk, pissed or the band(s) sucked, I stayed until the house lights came on and the roadies started taking the drum kit apart. Well, tonight, I broke that rule. Why? Southern California thrashers Bonded By Blood have announced the friendly departure of Alex Lee (guitar) and Jerry Garcia (bass). Brandon Gullin (Avenger of Blood) and Ben Bennet (Warbringer) will fill in the vacated spots on the band's upcoming North American tour supporting Sepultura.
Carlos Regalado, Juan Juarez and Mauro Gonzalez, Bonded By Blood's remaining members, have released the following statement:
"Bonded By Blood has gone through so many changes in the last couple of years while playing amazing festivals, touring the entire United States, Europe and Canada dozens of times, and enjoying the time with new and old friends and fans all over the world who mean the most to us. We first lost our original bass player, Ruben Dominguez back in 2009, then singer Jose Barrales left the band in 2010, but each was replaced with new members and the group marched on. Now, we regret to announce that Alex Lee (guitar) and Jerry Garcia (bass) are also stepping away from BBB. We will miss them just as much as we miss Ruben and Jose, and this band will not be the same without them, but the three of us that are left in Bonded By Blood hope that everyone who enjoys this band can understand that changes are inevitable. As much as we want to keep an 'original line-up', things happen that you just can't control.
"We hope all our friends, fans and fellow musicians can still give us the warm welcome we always received and still support us in these hard times while we rebuild the band as we all need all the support we can get. Thankfully, some new friends stepped up and are working hard to help us do the Sepultura tour, so big thanks to Ben Bennet (from Smog and formerly Warbringer) and Brandon Gulling (of Malus Rex and the recently reformed Avenger of Blood), who will be filling in on bass and rhythm guitar respectively while we keep together what is left of Bonded By Blood. We hope to see you all on the road again; it's not going to be the same without our old friends up there with us... But shit happens."
Alex Lee comments on leaving Bonded By Blood:
"With Jose leaving the band followed by my own parting, I want to assure you all that it is not a coincidence, nor is it a fluke. Being a guitarist, I have always been interested in playing other styles of music and not only thrash. Don't get me wrong, I love my thrash music, but I honestly see myself being suited better with another band or type of music than what I have been doing with Bonded By Blood. It has been one of the hardest decisions of my life, due to the fact that this was the first band that I was in or established, but now I feel that it's my time to move on and to continue my progress on a new path. I wish Bonded the best of luck and I know they can succeed. As for the fans, I know they won't truly understand, they can either hate me or follow me, but I hope they will continue listening to and seeing Bonded live, for I believe that they will hold strong for years to come. You guys were the best and thanks for the great years!"
Jerry Garcia reflects on his time with Bonded By Blood and his exit:
"Being part of Bonded By Blood for almost two years now has been the best experience of my life. I've seen and done things that I could have only dreamed of. I had the honor of sharing the stage with some of the most talented musicians in the world, including the ones in my band. Everything I experienced will be something that I will cherish for a lifetime. However, as time goes by and life begins to unfold, certain things begin to become very evident and downright inevitable. Bonded By Blood is more than just a band, it's a spirit and it transcends any single individual person or band member.
"I want to thank each and every single one of you that ever supported me and the guys in doing what we do best in life, and that is music. There is no better feeling in the world than to bring happiness to someone through music. It is an incredibly humbling experience that I never took for granted. I am not sad, nor am I disappointed in my departure from the band. I see it as a fresh start to another chapter in my random life. As for me... Well, I'll be around - music is something that is essential to my life. I cherished the good, learned from the bad and realized that in life, 'the only constant is change'.
"One last thank you to everyone that showed me kindness on and off the road, so thanks to Juan, Carlos, Alex, Mauro, Marco, Talita and the rest of the Earache gang including Anthony, every band I toured with, and most of all the fans! See ya!"

Lazarus A.D. has posted a video clip online with bassist Jeff Paulick in Spain thanking fans for their support. Lazarus A.D. was recently the victim of a van robbery in the U.K. having both money and personal items stolen. The incident took place the night of Tuesday March 15th in Southampton, U.K. where a person or persons broke a window to enter the band's van. The burglars got away with roughly $1,500 in cash, all of the bands personal items, including Social Security cards, birth certificates, clothing, and even personal hygiene items.
Californian thrashers Bonded By Blood are currently shredding their way around Europe on a co-headlining tour with Lazarus A.D. The tour is Bonded By Blood's first outing in Europe with new frontman Mauro Gonazalez. Following the first leg of the tour in the UK, the band is now in mainland Europe where bassist Jerry Garcia has been keeping a tour diary of the band's antics.
An excerpt from Jerry's latest tour update follows:
"Hey what's up guys! Just checking in here from Vienna in Austria. We had some incredibly epic nights recently and the highlights without a doubt are Zurich, Switzerland and Prague, Czech Republic! The fans out there absolutely kick ass. We had fans hanging from the ceiling, singing our songs, jumping on stage, buying us all sorts of alcoholic beverages, buying us pizza! Great times in both of these countries. It is such an honor to be able to come halfway across the globe and meet people that want nothing more than to spend some time with you and have a beer or two. It is an incredibly humbling experience and one I will never forget.
"The scenery out here is rad! Everything looks so epic that it is hard to explain. After touring nothing but North America I am happy to see a forest where different kinds of trees grow and animals live, or buildings that were built hundreds of years ago compared to the skyscrapers of New York.
"Lately we all came down with a bit of a cold and cough. We're doing better now and the great catering we get every night is helping us get back to 100% way faster than any of the times we've been sick on tour in the States when all we have to eat sometimes is a McDouble and tap water." More...
American thrash metallers Lazarus A.D. have posted a message online in which they revealed that, while in Southampton, during their current tour of the United Kingdom, their van was broken into. Their posting reads as follows:
"We just want to personally say thank you, to the fuck douche bags who smashed our vans window and stole $1500 and all our clothes and other personal items. All I can say is thank god we had the gear on stage or the fuckers would have stolen that as well."
Dan Gapen: "They got every cent of band money, Social Security Cards and our birth certificates. Not to mention they took all of our clothes and hygiene items. Thank god we had our passports in our pockets."
If you would like to donate money to help the band out, please head over to this location.
Californian thrashers Bonded By Blood kick off their European tour with Lazarus A.D. tonight, Wednesday March 8th in London, UK. Both bands will co-headline the tour, which will hit 14 countries. The shows will be Bonded By Blood's first appearances in Europe with their new frontman, Mauro Gonzalez.
Drummer Carlos Regalado comments:
"Bonded By Blood is finally returning to Europe to do a proper tour! We are so excited to finally finish what we started back in '09 with Fueled By Fire when we ran into troubles and had to cancel the remainder of the tour and disappoint so many fans.
"This time we are part of a co-headlining tour with Lazarus A.D.; both of us just shared the stage on a Death Angel US tour, and together we're hitting plenty of countries and mashing tons more faces! With the addition of our new singer Mauro Gonzalez, we are ready now more than ever and can't wait to see familiar faces and make some new friends and party down! See you on the killing road..."
