Just a few weeks ago I watched Cavalera Conspiracy perform Sepultura songs at the Texas Independence Festival on the very same stage at Empire Control Room & Garage. At that show I heard the former voice (Max) and beat maker (Igor) of Sepultura. With the band bearing the namesake Sepultura, I witnessed original bassist Paulo Jr. and longtime guitarist Andreas Kisser. Most of all I would be comparing vocalists. I saw Max Cavalera front the band during their vaunted “Chaos A.D.” album twenty-one years ago, so I was curious to hear Derrick Green’s fill in this position. More...

The Sun is shining and Bloodstock is excited to announce seven more of metal’s finest for the UK’s heaviest weekender, including a clutch of bands from the farthest flung corners of the globe.
Friday’s line up will now include extreme prog metal Aussies, Ne Obliviscaris. The band proclaims, “UK, here we come! 2015 is the year we are finally going to reach your shores and we couldn’t be more excited to announce that it will be as part of the enormous Bloodstodck festival. We’re looking forward to playing alongside many of the best and biggest heavy acts from across the world!”
Saturday’s bill sees two bands who’ve jetted in from Indonesia, a hotbed of metal and one of the planet’s most burgeoning heavy music scenes. Burgerkill and Jasad are two of the country’s biggest metal acts, even counting the country’s metal-loving prime minister, Joko Widodo among their fans.
Sunday’s line-up sees a very special solo set from ex-Evile shredsman, Ol Drake to accompany his upcoming solo album, "Old Rake" which is out in June via Earache. Ol comments "I'm very excited to be returning to Bloodstock in a musical capacity. The weekend is fully booked off work (I was going anyway) and we're rehearsing right now. It’ll be a very special show, so don’t miss it. I’ll no doubt be having my fair share of drinks and Jagermeister afterwards and no doubt be returning to work feeling buzzed yet terrible. This is probably the only show I'll be doing to promote the album. Hope to see you there!" More...

Celebrating its 30th year of existence, Brazil’s Sepultura (which was just looked at for Thrashback Thursday last week) will be headlining a tour that includes German thrashers Destruction as direct support and American melodic tech-deathsters Arsis as openers.
“It’s going to be an amazing experience to celebrate a 30-year career with the strongest album we’ve ever made in our history,” states Sepultura guitarist & songwriter Andreas Kisser about the upcoming 33-show trek and latest album, "The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart."
He goes on to say, “We are coming back to America and Canada with full force and with a hunger to destroy everything! Can't wait to perform the songs from the new album on stage! See you all on the road!”
The mayhem begins in Phoenix, Arizona on May 10th and ends on June 14th in Grand Junction, Colorado. Sepultura will be performing one solo show on May 9th. Dates are as follows: More...
Growing up listening to the "big 4" of thrash, Sepultura was another step toward the extreme for me.
"Beneath The Remains" had an early death metal feel, while "Arise" was thrashy and full of speed, but did not necessarily have all the qualities of what one would call thrash.
Having passed over "Schizophrenia" (1987) for decades due to its poor production, I finally picked up a remaster of the album and was amazed at the gems found on it. Many of the songs are flat out thrashy ("To The Wall," "Rest In Pain"), but "Escape To The Void" sticks to the old school thrash formula the best.
If you're a thrash fan, but a bit picky about production quality, and passed over "Schizophrenia" like I had, it's time to remedy that. At least give this song a listen:
The organizers of the Bloodstock Festival are excited to announce their third headliner for the Sophie Lancaster Stage, and a slew of other Sophie stage bands for the August 2015 event.
Industrial outfit Godflesh is to headline Sunday night on the Sophie Lancaster stage. Frontman Justin Broadrick comments: “Godflesh is thrilled to be playing a very metal UK festival! We don’t get asked to play many, as we’re often viewed as not ‘real’ metal enough, or we’re generally seen as outsiders, which we are, thank you. That doesn’t mean we don’t like to be invited to be a real metal band once in a while and especially in the Derbyshire countryside! Thank you Bloodstock!“
British thrash stalwarts Onslaught also join the Sophie stage line-up on Sunday. The band is celebrating the 30th anniversary in 2015 of debut album, "Power From Hell," with a special EP on the cards for release and special anniversary merch available.
Self-appointed "caveman battle doom" 3-piece, Conan will crash Friday’s Sophie bill. Having recently returned from a string of shows in Australia and mainland Europe, Conan is prepping for a slot on the Maryland DeathFest this summer, before bringing an unholy wall of sound to Catton Park in August.
Greek southern-tinged heavy rockers Planet Of Zeus step up for a Sophie stage slot on Saturday, while London’s blackened doomsters Bast also join the Friday bill. The currently announced lineup for the 2015 edition is as follows: More...
Feeling the winter chill creeping in? Bloodstock to the rescue then, with three more bands announced to get you hot under the collar.
Norwegian extremists Enslaved are added to Bloodstock’s Main Stage next summer. With a new album due in March 2015 via Nuclear Blast, expect to bang your head to some brand new tunes. Guitarist Ivar Bjørnson states:
“We’ve been to Bloodstock once before in 2009, and not only did we understand then why it has become the most important UK Metal festival – but it has grown to mammoth-proportions since. In sum; what an absolute pleasure and honour to be invited back. We like to think that we too have developed somewhat; having a few new, pretty awesome albums and world tours under our (over-stretched) belts. We can’t wait to come and show the Bloodstock crowd what we’ve been up to. To quote one of our spiritual beacons; General Melchett: 'If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.'"
Hailing from the frozen wilds of Finland, folk metal six-piece Korpiklaani is set to join the fray in a UK exclusive appearance. Guitarist Country Cane tells us; "After having great fun and sold out shows ?with our good friends in Sabaton and TÝR, we are excited to be back in the UK to play Bloodstock in 2015. We plan to return and get the crowds singing and dancing Korpiklaani style on our next rock n roll adventure.” More...
The heavy hitting Florida metal heads from Trivium are revealed as the Bloodstock Friday main stage headliners in a U.K. exclusive for 2015.
Frontman Matt Heafy raves: “The UK is where the world first took notice of Trivium, and to pay true homage to that, Trivium will be playing the most Metal festival that exists in the UK: Bloodstock! We are thrilled beyond words to celebrate our first time at Bloodstock with the the UK’s Metal elite.”
Other new confirmations include Sabaton and Agalloch. The currently announced festival lineup is as follows:
Rob Zombie, Trivium, Within Temptation, Opeth, Sabaton, Sepultura, Cannibal Corpse, Ihsahn, Orange Goblin, Death DTA, Nuclear Assault, 1349, Dark Angel, Armored Saint, Belphegor, Overkill, Ensiferum, Agalloch
A short report on Sepultura's 30th-anniversary celebrations from "Bom Dia São Paulo" can be seen below.
The English-language edition of "Relentless: Thirty Years Of Sepultura", the first complete biography of Sepultura's epic career by Sao Paulo, Brazil-based U.S. author Jason Korolenko, was made available on December 4 via Rocket 88, a UK-based publisher dedicated to exploring new worlds of music and popular culture.
The foreword, preface and first chapter of "Relentless: Thirty Years Of Sepultura" can be found on the Rocket 88 web site.
While everyone’s talking about Christmas approaching, the Bloodstock festival organizer's sights are firmly fixed on next August. What better way to roll into the festive season than to announce three more crackin’ bands for 2015’s premier heavy metal event?
First up is thrash outfit Overkill. Front man Bobby ‘Blitz’ Ellsworth says: “We are loading the BIG guns and setting sail for the UK this summer! Be warned! The island is in danger, it's a White Devil Army....Lets make Bloodstock 2015 a bloodbath!”
Folk metal Finns Ensiferum are also joining the party, having recently wrapped recording on brand new album, "One Man Army," set for release on February 23rd.
Austrian blackened death metal overlords Belphegor will also make a return to Catton Park in 2015. Frontman/guitarist and founder Helmuth Lehner comments: “Belphegor returns to the ingenious Bloodstock Open Air! We will play at the main stage and promote our latest offering ‘Conjuring The Dead.’ Belphegor will bring you the most intense ritual possible. Join the pit and prepare for Diabolical Death Metal chaos.” More...
The organizers of the Bloodstock 2015 festival have issued the following announcement about new band confirmations:
"Bloodstock early bird tickets are flying out the door in the wake of Halloween’s Rob Zombie headline announcement, but here at festival HQ we aren’t resting on our laurels, we’ve got even more bands ready to add on to the bill!
"British stoner/doom overlords, Orange Goblin are set for a main stage slot in 2015. Having recently unleashed their eighth studio album, 'Back From The Abyss' via Candlelight Records, the band are currently laying waste to Europe on tour with the mighty St Vitus. Check out the brand new video for ‘Sabbath Hex’ from the new release here.
?Norwegian black metallers 1349 also sign up. With latest studio album ‘Massive Cauldron Of Chaos’ recently hitting the racks, the band have also found time to collaborate with Minnesota’s Surly Brewing Company and launch their own ‘1349 Black Ale’. Check out this informative video clip featuring drummer Frost and vocalist Ravn explaining how the whole thing came about over here. More...
Ex-Sepultura drummer Igor Cavalera "really hopes" that the group's classic lineup can one day reunite, but says that there are no concrete plans for him and his brother Max to rejoin their former bandmates.
Igor left Sepultura in June 2006 due to "artistic differences." His departure from the band came five months after he announced that he was taking a break from Sepultura touring activities to spend time with his second wife and their new son (who was born in January 2006). In 1996, Max left Sepultura after the band fired Max's wife Gloria as their manager.
Asked by Metal Wani if there is any chance of a reformation of Sepultura late '80s/early '90s lineup — featuring Igor and Max alongside guitarist Andreas Kisser and bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr. — Igor said: "I hope so, but there's nothing solid. The only solid thing right now, it's what I do with Max, and it's Cavalera Conspiracy. Like, the whole Sepultura thing, it's something that we don't know if it's gonna happen or not. To be honest, I really hope one day we can do this in a very cool way." More...
