Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.
Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...

This will be Sepultura's first full length album since 2013's, "The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart" and their third for Nuclear Blast Records. More information will be revealed as it becomes available.

Just a few weeks ago I watched Cavalera Conspiracy perform Sepultura songs at the Texas Independence Festival on the very same stage at Empire Control Room & Garage. At that show I heard the former voice (Max) and beat maker (Igor) of Sepultura. With the band bearing the namesake Sepultura, I witnessed original bassist Paulo Jr. and longtime guitarist Andreas Kisser. Most of all I would be comparing vocalists. I saw Max Cavalera front the band during their vaunted “Chaos A.D.” album twenty-one years ago, so I was curious to hear Derrick Green’s fill in this position. More...

Growing up listening to the "big 4" of thrash, Sepultura was another step toward the extreme for me.
"Beneath The Remains" had an early death metal feel, while "Arise" was thrashy and full of speed, but did not necessarily have all the qualities of what one would call thrash.
Having passed over "Schizophrenia" (1987) for decades due to its poor production, I finally picked up a remaster of the album and was amazed at the gems found on it. Many of the songs are flat out thrashy ("To The Wall," "Rest In Pain"), but "Escape To The Void" sticks to the old school thrash formula the best.
If you're a thrash fan, but a bit picky about production quality, and passed over "Schizophrenia" like I had, it's time to remedy that. At least give this song a listen:
