Sepultura Confirms Date For Final Show
After more than four decades of bringing Brazilian heavy music to the world’s biggest stages, Sepultura have officially announced the final show of their career. The historic performance will take place on 7 November 2026 at the Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu in São Paulo Brazil, marking the end of one of the most influential journeys in the history of heavy metal worldwide.
The choice of the Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu holds special meaning for the band. The venue has been part of Sepultura’s history since the early 1990s, especially because of the iconic concert held at Praça Charles Miller, in front of the stadium, which helped establish the band’s strength in Brazil. Decades later, Sepultura returns to the same place to close its story, where part of that legacy was also built.
More than a farewell concert, the night is being conceived as a grand celebration of Sepultura’s history, bringing together different generations, eras and artists who have become part of the band’s journey over the past 40 years. The idea is to transform the final show into a unique moment of tribute, connection and celebration of Brazilian heavy music and its global impact.
Among the international acts already confirmed is Metal Allegiance, featuring some of the most respected musicians in the global metal scene, including Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater, Alex Skolnick and Chuck Billy of Testament, Phil Demmel, formerly of Machine Head, Troy Sanders of Mastodon, and bassist/founder Mark Menghi.
The line-up will also feature confirmed appearances by Krisiun, one of the world’s most respected death metal bands, and American thrash metal band Sacred Reich. Additional special guests will be announced soon.
Former members and musicians connected to Sepultura’s history over the decades are also expected to join the celebration, including Jean Dolabella and Jairo Guedz, the latter of whom was part of the band’s original line-up.
Sepultura’s final show at the Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu promises to be a historic, emotional and unforgettable night, a farewell befitting the band’s importance to both Brazilian culture and the global heavy metal scene.
“The Punisher” Featuring Danzig & Hatebreed Tracks

Today saw the release of “The Punisher: One Last Kill” on Disney+. The hyperviolent new entry in the Marvel cinematic universe brings Jon Bernthal back as Frank Castle/The Punisher, continuing the character’s storyline across his prior streaming series and MCU cameo appearances.
Spoilers ahead regarding the film’s soundtrack: the feature includes several notable metal needle drops. The opening scene is set to Danzig’s 1988 classic “Mother,” while a later, particularly brutal fight sequence features Hatebreed’s “I Will Be Heard,” the lead single from their 2002 major-label debut “Perseverance.”
Although not part of official MCU canon, the 2008 film “Punisher: War Zone” famously featured a metal-heavy soundtrack including Slayer, Slipknot, Rob Zombie, and Hatebreed’s cover of Sepultura’s “Refuse / Resist,” making this new usage a fitting nod to the franchise’s history of heavy music.

Cavalera Conspiracy Premiere New Song "Piledriver"

Cavalera Conspiracy, the heavy-hitting project helmed by Brazilian metal icons Max and Iggor Cavalera, have unleashed a new song titled “Piledriver” to coincide with the release of new ‘Street Fighter 6’ DLC. The thrash-driven track was written in tribute to the game’s powerhouse character Zangief, and even nods stylistically to classic early-90s Ministry.
“Piledriver” serves as the sonic companion to todays' launch of Zangief’s ‘Outfit 4’ DLC, with free in-game cosmetic gear featuring the Cavalera logo also becoming available.
According to ‘Street Fighter’ director Takayuki Nakayama, this collaboration was born from his long-standing admiration for the Cavalera brothers’ music and its aggressive energy — a perfect fit for Zangief’s brutal persona: More...

The Final Day Of Mystic Festival Was Bittersweet
The day I was dreading had arrived, that day being the last day of Mystic Festival 2025. Another bummer was that there was more rain today. Lots of it. It’s an expected risk and there’s nothing you can do about it other than soak it all in, literally. Rain jackets and ponchos were ever-present today and if you were one of those that thought you could hold out not wearing rain gear during the first 3 days of the festival, today was your true test.
Fortunately for me the first band on my must-see list was going to be indoors. When I arrived, the stink of humidity permeating the venue but that would be a distant memory once Death Angel tore into “Mistress of Pain” from their debut album, “The Ultra Violence.” That surprised me because that last few times I’ve seen Death Angel, they rarely play material from their early releases. When the second song turned out to be “Voracious Souls,” my mind was blown. This is how you win back your OG fans Death Angel! Bravo!
_-_06-07-2025/Death_Angel/Death_Angel_7.jpg)
Death Angel
Because Polish death metal legends Vader was starting only fifteen minutes after Death Angel’s set began, I could only stay around the halfway point of “Voracious Souls.” The rain was falling steadily by the time I exited the venue. Between dodging crisscrossing poncho clad metalheads, random rain puddles and putting on my own rain jacket, I made it just in time for Vader’s first song. When I arrived, all the photographers were told that we would have to wait until the start of Vader’s second song to enter the photo pit because Vader was going to deploy a ton of pyro during their opening song.
This Vader set was going to be special. They were going to play the whole “Litany” album. The album released in 2000 and was recorded right here in Gdansk. It garnered massive acclaim throughout the metal cosmos and death metal circles. The crowd that gathered for this special set was massive. I’ll do my best to give you a visual. The Park Stage area is about 50 yards long and then it butts against a circle of food trucks. When this stage area gets packed, the crowd spills out into the asphalt roadway that in turn is the main artery walkway for the festival. During Vader’s set, that walkway was jam packed with onlookers. It was practically impossible to navigate in either direction if you wanted to go to the Main Stage area or the Desert and Shrine stages.
As the final notes of the opening song “Wings” faded out, we were allowed to enter the soggy mud laden pit area. The first thing I noticed was the fans standing on the other side of the security barriers. These were the hardcore fans. There were numerous Vader logo adorned banners draped over the barriers and one of front row fans had a giant Vader band logo tattooed over his whole back. I grabbed a shot of this and you can see it in Day 3 photo gallery HERE.
Between the rain, Vader’s unforgiving playing, the overzealous crowd energy and copious amount of fire pot blasts, it felt like I was in a war zone and I loved every second of it. Most of the press at Mystic Festival are from Poland, so to say there wasn’t much room to move about the photo pit was an understatement. In addition to playing the whole “Litany” album, Vader played several more songs and closed their fantastic set with “The Imperial March” of Star Wars fame.

Piotr Wiwczarek of Vader
After a wild (an understatement) Vader set, I was looking forward to something a little more subdued. I know what you’re thinking, what is subdued at a metal festival?, Well, that would be Apocalyptica. The rain was still drizzling, but at least it wasn’t heavy. This was going to be another 15-minute turnaround set. I could only stay for about a song or so before I had to run across festival grounds to catch Pentagram. Apocalyptica opened their set with Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning” and that was all I was able to see since that song is over six minutes long. It was going to take me at least 7 minutes to get to the Desert Stage. The minutes math didn’t have much wiggle room.
_-_06-07-2025/Apocalyptica/Apocalyptica_6.jpg)
Apocalyptica
This was my second time seeing Apocalyptica live and I was a lot closer this time so I could really see all the intricacies of their playing. It’s quite impressive how three cellos and a drummer can layer and mix so many complex melodies without stepping on each other. I made it to right around the dual guitar solo part of the song and then I had to haul ass (See professional journalism nomenclature) to the distant Desert Stage.
Bobby Liebling, the frontman of the historic doom metal band Pentagram, just about broke the internet earlier this year. A video surfaced showcasing his trademark death stare and his wispy white hair billowing like a geriatric lion’s mane on a windblown plain. The video went massively viral on social media platforms such as TikTok and Reddit which in turn caused renewed interest in the Black Sabbath doom inspired band that reached the apex of its popularity during the 1970’s.
Fast forward to 2011, a biopic titled “Last Days Here” showcased Bobby Liebling’s struggles with drug addiction. The indie film garnered a lot of attention and renewed some interest in the mostly forgotten doom legends. More doom and gloom would fall upon Pentagram. In 2017, Bobby Liebling was arrested for "abuse and neglect of a vulnerable adult custodian” and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Most everyone thought that this was the end of the road for Bobby and Pentagram until “the video” surfaced and spread like a pandemic through the metal interwebs and obviously caught the attention of several festival and concert organizers. That brings us to the current moment where I was arriving just in time for Pentagram’s second only appearance in Poland and their first time at Mystic Festival. More...

Sepultura Bids Farewell To London
Some bands become popular enough that they put their hometowns on the map. Some even get to become the metal ambassadors for their country, for example Moonspell of Portugal or Skinflint of Botswana. And then there's Sepultura, not only the first breakthrough metal band from Brazil, but the first from South America. For forty years, Sepultura has been a major name in metal, releasing genre defining, and genre-defying classics and selling out venues across the globe. On December 8th of last year, the band announced that they would be hitting the road for 18 months to say goodbye, calling time on one of the most important names in the history of metal, though new music is still expected to arrive at some point in the form of a four song EP. Having recently completed a trek across the United States of America and Canada, the Brazilian titans are currently rampaging across Europe, alongside a stellar cast of support acts, and this past Tuesday, Metal Underground was on hand to witness their final show in the United Kingdom, as they headlined the legendary Hammersmith Apollo.
The Apollo, formerly known as the Odeon, has a huge place in rock and roll history, dating back to the fifties when Buddy Holly not only performed his final British shows at the venue, but also had the caps of two teeth knocked out by his bandmate Joe B. Mauldin, to being the host of live albums by Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, Dream Theater and Black Sabbath to name only some, and when entering the venue, one can immediately feel the legacy. This feeling doesn't last for too long, as there's an immediate scramble for the merch booth, but once that's over with, it's right back to basking in the Apollo's glory. Opening what promised to be another memorable night in West London was Philadelphia metallic hardcore heavyweights Jesus Piece. Many would argue that hardcore works best in a smaller, more intimate setting, and maybe it does, but a good band can make any stage their home, which is exactly what Jesus Piece did.
Vocalist Aaron Heard is a ball of energy, tearing across the wide stage and barking out lyrics with sheer ferocity, and his bandmates are just as amped up, each putting in a great shift to get the crowd going. Indeed, it didn't take too long for the early birds to get a circle pit going, swirling around the famous hall at full speed, and the whole crowd showed a lot of appreciation. What was nice was that Jesus Piece made excellent use of their time, getting in as many songs as possible and not wasting anyone's time with the cliche hardcore speeches about brotherhood and positivity, which while well intended, are really annoying at this point in time. As quickly as they arrived, they went, but Jesus Piece definitely made their mark in W6, proving themselves to be an excellent live act that can fit in well on any heavy bill. More...

Sepultura Parts Ways With Drummer Eloy Casagrande
Brazilian metal legends Sepultura has announced that drummer Eloy Casagrande has decided to leave the band, shortly before the opening run of their farewell tour. Taking his place will be American drummer Greyson Nekrutman, best known for his work with Suicidal Tendencies. A statement from the band reads as follows:
"The 'Celebrating Life Through Death' tour, a farewell tour over the next 18 months that will celebrate the band's 40th anniversary and also its farewell to the stage.
"Beginning of December the group clearly defined the intention at the announcement, it is a 'conscious and planned death.' As poetic as it sounds, a tour of this magnitude took nearly of year of preparing and planning which would require a lot commitment, ethics and loyalty to their fans, as well as respecting for the band's history, something that is a clear priority to Andreas Kisser, Derrick Green and Paulo Xisto.
"However, on February 6th a few days prior to the first rehearsal, drummer Eloy Casagrande informed the band that he was leaving Sepultura to pursue a career in another project. The band were taken by surprise, without prior warning, he immediately left the band, abandoning everything related to Sepultura.
"Luckily American virtuoso Greyson Nekrutman will take the position of Eloy Casagrande and is welcomed as the band's new drummer for the 'Celebrating Life Through Death' farewell tour." More...

Greekbastard's 2023 Anti-List For 2023
I get bored of making lists, reading lists, being listed, etc., but here I am at the end of 2023 compiling my thoughts on creating a list that only a handful of people will actually take the time to read. This is not a dig on those that create/read/ingest lists, rather me brainstorming on what to put down in words my most metal memories of 2023. Depending on who reads this, we might even share some of these memories, so without further ado, let’s do this.
I want to give my respects to some of the fallen this year. Some were founding members of their respective bands, but the music will live on in their memory. Rest In Power: Josua Henrik Lander Madsen (Artillery), Jim Durkin (Dark Angel), Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake), Anthony Meo (Biohazard), Ryan Siew (Polaris), Zach Scott (Beyond Extinction), Mark Adams (Saint Vitus), Kirk Arrington (Metal Church), Jon Kennedy (Hecate Enthroned).
In 2023, there were some headlines in the metal cosmos that stood out. For starters, Sepultura calling it a day. How about Mike Portnoy rejoining Dream Theater? Or, Ozzy canceling his appearance at Power Trip festival, or even better, AC/DC’s triumphant return at that very same festival? More...

Brutal Assault 2023 - Seven Most Memorable Bands
Sometimes as a writer, you must mix things up from time to time. I normally write up festival reports, day by day, band by band, blah, blah, blah…it gets mundane for the writer and more importantly, the reader. Brutal Assault 2023 took place in early August of this year and we’re already in mid-September as of this writing.
I took plenty of notes after each day so I know most of the details of each day. However, I’m going to write up Brutal Assault 2023 in such a way where I’m going to list my top seven most memorable bands of the festival and why I remembered them. I’ll refer to my notes only to confirm what I remembered, but the meat of it will be from my own personal, gray matter hard drive.
For reference, here are some personal stats regarding my Brutal Assault band viewing numbers. I saw at least 30 bands over 4 days and I photographed 28 of them. Most bands were headliner type bands you would see on tour or that put out releases through well-known metal labels. Most of these bands are in the extreme metal genre.
Without further ado, and not ranked in any particular order, my top seven: More...
