Sunday Old School: Acid Drinkers

We've already seen twice this year, through our features on Behemoth and Vader, that Poland is a country which has contributed some great works to the art of heavy metal music. This week, we'll be taking a look at another band from the country that helped to pave the way for metal in Eastern Europe and stake a place in the thrash which had boomed in their neighbouring country, Germany. A group from Poznan known quite memorably as Acid Drinkers.

The band was formed in September 1986 by singing bassist Tomasz "Titus" Pukacki and guitarist, Robert "Litza" Friedrich, who were soon joined by drummer, Maciej "Slepy" Gluchowski and another guitar player named, Dariusz "Popcorn" Popowicz. They recorded their first songs together before Pukacki was forced to put his musical aspirations on hold for two years to do his part for the army. He returned two years later and eventually reformed Acid Drinkers with Friedrich and Maciek "Slimak" Starosta. They performed their first gig in August 1989 in western Poland's largest city, Wroclaw. Acid Drinkers Guitarist Passes Away At Age 29

Polish rock band Acid Drinkers has announced that their guitarist Aleksander "Olass" Mendyk passed away yesterday at the tender age of 29. No further details have been made available at the moment. The band released a box set earlier this year through Metal Mind Productions.

Metal Mind Prod Readies Acid Drinkers Box Set

Metal Mind Productions has announced the complete discography of Acid Drinkers, one of the best metal bands from Poland. A deluxe box entitled "Acid Empire - 1989 – 2008" contains of 13 albums (studio and live): "Are You A Rebel?", "Dirty Money, Dirty Tricks", "Strip Tease", "Vile Vicious Vision", "Fishdick", "Infernal Connection", "The State Of Mind Report", "High Proof Cosmic Milk", "Varran Strikes Back - Alive!!!", "Amazing Atomic Activity", "Broken Head", "Acidofilia", "Rock Is Not Enough" plus 2 DVDs: "15 Screwed Years" and "The Hand That Rocks The Coffin". The box also includes bonus tracks (rare, previously unreleased, demo, live and video), 96 page booklet with biography, discography, lyrics to all songs and a selection of amazing archive photos.

During their long and eventful career, Acid Drinkers played over 1000 concerts, including well remembered gigs at Jarocin Festival, Metalmania, Wegorzewo, Przystanek Woodstock or Odjazdy. They supported Polish gigs of such metal giants as Deep Purple, Megadeth, Bruce Dickinson, Sepultura, Paradise Lost or Slayer. Acid Drinkers won Fryderyk Award (Polish equivalent of Grammy Award) in 1998, 2000 and 2004 for "Best Hard & Heavy Act". They were acclaimed the best five bands of the 90s in a poll published in Teraz Rock, the most important rock magazine in Poland.
