Johan Hegg: 'We Keep Going Forward'

Jeffrey Easton of metal-exiles.com recently conducted an interview with Amon Amarth frontman Johan Hegg.

Jeffrey: How is the tour with Children of Bodom going?

Johan: As the support act you never really expect the tremendous response but we have been getting a great reaction.

Jeff: How do you think you are going over with Bodom’s crowd?

Johan: It is kind of weird but I do believe some of their fans like us. I can see why some would not like us but seem to enjoy it and get into it.

Jeff: You have been over here a few times but your biggest fan base is in Europe. What is the difference between touring here in the States and touring in Europe?

Johan: In Europe we can headline, we are not in that position yet. Going on this tour is a big step in the right direction. The crowds are the same everywhere and the venues on this tour are standard to us. The similarities are pretty big.

Jeff: A metal fan is a metal fan everywhere.

Johan: That is true but sometimes American fans go to extreme lengths to talk to you.

Jeff: How is that?

Johan: At one of our stops some fan wanted to talk to me so he waited until I was done with the other fans and all he wanted to do was just hang out with me.

Children Of Bodom, Amon Amarth Live Report

Nights like this one only confirm that Euro-metal is steadily on the rise in New England. Judging by the number of excited fans attending the Palladium on Dec 16th, you would think that we were graced with not one but two headliners. It was a year ago, almost to the day that the two cohorts of Scandinavian merry men strolled through town and now they brought along France's beloved Gojira. Keeping chronological order, Sanctity took the stage first. They were greeted surprisingly well for an opening act. I haven't seen these guys before but kudos for their fervor on stage. Some of the fans were familiar with their stuff and even managed to form the beginnings of a mosh pit.

Highly acclaimed but alas, largely unknown in US, Gojira were up next. The quality of their music and the level of passion they played with were enchanting. This is a band that effortlessly fuses serene imagery with formidable riffs in an exceedingly refined manner. Grimacing vocalist Joe Deplaned was remarkably dynamic in his performance, interacting on stage and proving that Death metal bands can actually be eye-pleasing to watch. Mario's drum solo was an unexpected but gratifying treat. The set list revolved around their latest album: Ocean Planet, Heaviest Matter, Flying Whales and Backbone. The crowd looked a bit perplexed but displayed support with spontaneous cheers. More...

This Ending Signs To Metal Blade Records

Metal Blade Records has announced the signing of This Ending from Stockholm, Sweden. This Ending were formerly known as The Plague, but had to change their name due to legal constraints.

This Ending started during the fall of 2005. 13 songs were created, three of which are featured on the downloadable demo recorded at Offbeat Studio in the winter of 2005.

This Ending existed in a previous incarnation as A Canorous Quintet. After several years of absence from the metal scene the guys decided that the time was right for a new era. It was time for the age of the plague. Members of the band are/have been active in the following bands: Amon Amarth, Guidance Of Sin, Niden Div. 187 and Sins Of Omission, among others.

Comments the band: "We are very pleased to be working with one of the most dedicated metal labels in the industry. Metal Blade is the first and only label that came to our minds when we were deciding on which label to present our demo with. We felt that they would understand and appreciate our style. We are confident that This Ending and Metal Blade will have a strong future together and look forward to the outcome of this partnership. We will be very proud to bear the Metal Blade logo on our releases."

A full-length album is due to be recorded during August and September at Off-Beat Studio in Stockholm, Sweden. No release date has been set yet.

Amon Amarth Begin Mixing New Album

Swedish Viking death metal heroes AMON AMARTH recenttly entered Fascination Street studios in Örebro, Sweden to begin recording their sixth full-length album. The group will record and mix all through May until June 14 with producer Jens Bogren. The as-yet-untitled CD is scheduled for release in September via Metal Blade Records.

Commented the band: "Finally after five very long — but productive — weeks all recording is done and today we started mixing the album. Nine tracks have been successfully recorded — no thanks to the huge ammount of alcohol consumed, but nonetheless successfully — and we can now reveal some of the titles: 'Valhall Awaits Me', 'Hermod’s Ride To Hel (Loke’s Trechery Part I)' and 'Runes To My Memory'. More titles will be revealed shortly."

Metal Blade Records has just issued an AMON AMARTH DVD, entitled "Wrath of the Norsemen". The three-disc set was released in a deluxe 10-page digipack with special gold-laminated slipcase. The main body of the DVD is the Cologne show from last year — filmed with 11 cameras, this was the longest show AMON AMARTH have ever played (23 songs!). Bonus footage includes interviews, behind-the-scenes of the DVD recording and other stuff filmed around the Cologne show. Discs 2 and 3 feature professionally filmed shows from Summer Breeze 2005, the Metal Blade Rrroooaaarrr 2005 (a show with a really unusual setlist!), Wacken Open Air 2004 and the release show for "Fate of Norns" in Ludwigsburg (Germany) in 2004.

Amon Amarth Checks In With Studio Update

Amon Amarth have posted the following studio update on the band's official website:

"Around noon today Ted finished all bass lines and added another level of heaviness to the production and, just to show his appearance, Thor brought on a little thunderstorm yesterday. It changed our bbq plans for the evening a bit, but we don't mind. Next up is Johan adding his powerful grunts. We have divided the vocals recording into two sessions so we will start with two or three days first. After that we take five days to lay down lead guitars and will continue with the vocals after that. This to make it easier for Johan's voice to last, since screaming 8-10 hours straight per day is not the easiest task!

"In other news we can also reveal that yesterday we got our first copy of the "Wrath of Norsemen" DVD [view photo] and even we are amazed!"
