SXSW 2014 Day Three: Dio Tribute, Metalsucks

Friday, March 14, 2014, my third day attending SXSW music festivities, started just after 3 pm. This event was my only excursion outside of live music. Members of Landshark Promotions and DJ Chuck Loesch of 101X "No Control Radio" premiered a CD of the Ronnie James Dio tribute album "This Is Your Life." The three-person panel presented each track from the forthcoming recording featuring an all-star lineup of modern and classic metal artists. It felt good singing along to these majestic reworkings done in the name of charity. 100% of the proceeds will go towards Wendy Dio's "Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund" .

East Of The Wall Reveals Album Release

New Jersey-based progressive metal unit East of the Wall will be releasing fourth full-length, "Redaction Artifacts," on October 29th, once again through Translation Loss Records. The following press release was issued about the ablum:

"East of the Wall's first record since the departure of bassist Brett Bamberger and guitarist Kevin Conway sees the band's style expanding into a newer archetype, the sound of Redaction Artifacts surging with a more direct and driving core while the mellower and melodious atmospheres of the songwriting sound more vibrant and cohesive than ever.

"In Conway and Bamberger's place, the band's remaining members -- Chris Alfano, who moved from guitar/vocals to bass/vocals, guitarist/vocalist Matt Lupo, and drummer Seth Rheam -- have added Ray Suhy, a jaw-dropping guitar shredder from Portland, Maine, as well as guitarist/vocalist Greg Kuter, who adds the strongest melodic vocal presence the band has yet had.

"Redaction Artifacts is the densest East of the Wall record to date, with eleven tracks of intricately conceived genre jumping metal. The album was tracked by Eric Rachel (Municipal Waste, God Forbid, Burnt By The Sun, Skid Row) at Trax East, and Todd Hutchinsen (Zud, The Baltic Sea) at Acadia Recording, and mixed by Eric Rachel at Trax East. In addition to the digital and CD versions through Translation Loss, Science Of Silence will be releasing the record on vinyl as a double LP." More...

East Of The Wall Stops in Huntington, WV

The night ended up being one of those really unexpected good times. I started in a mellow mood, listening to piano albums by Medeski and Mingus all day. The weather was unseasonably warm for a mid-April evening which made me want to be outside, not stuck in bar listening to four heavy metal bands I had never heard of until 1:00 in the morning.

I headed over to the V Club to check at 9pm. To my surprise, All Hail the Yeti, had dropped off the roster which pushed the start time back an hour, which gave me an hour to kill. I passed the time nursing a Corona and chatting up Mr. Duncan, the door man, about the show posters they had on the wall. Jimbo Valentine of Amalgam Unlimited had created a badass poster for the show that night. In retrospect I should have asked for a copy.

Among the Dead was the first band on stage. Among the Dead is a local band from Huntington, a 3-piece plus singer, in their early 20s maybe. The singer had a stubbled head, a beer belly, was wearing camo shorts and nerd glasses. The other three members looked like versions of a skinny jeans advert, all lanky and cropped hair. Their sound was heavy, death metal, with a loose playing style, though the songs stayed together well. The singer alternated belting out deep guttural bellows and sick screeches. The guitar player had some brief sweet spot solos, while the bassist bruised his instrument with interludes on a song or two. The drummer had serious technique with the double bass. The crowd liked these guys. They clapped and whistled and cheered. After their second song someone in the audience yelled, “Can we get more please?” Among the Dead delivered the request and much more. More...

East Of The Wall Gearing Up To Record Album

East of the Wall will be entering the New Brunswick, New Jersey recording studio Trax East on May 27th to begin tracking the band's next album, "Redaction Artifacts," with engineer Eric Rachel (Burnt By The Sun, God Forbid, The Red Chord, Municipal Waste). Mixing is scheduled for mid-July and the album will be released in late October via Translation Loss Records.

Those wishing to hear new material from Redaction Artifacts right now can do so by purchasing the benefit single for the band's new song, "I'm Always Fighting Drago." All proceeds go to producer Andrew Schneider, to help him rebuild his studio Translator Audio -- the point of conception for previous East Of The Wall albums as well as Made Out Of Babies, Keelhaul, Cave In, Unsane, and more have recorded -- which was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.

In addition to the new demo for "...Drago" and an acoustic version of the band's song "Century Of Excellence," anyone who purchases the benefit single this April will receive links to download two free albums. The first is the new "Personnel" EP from EOTW guitarist/vocalist Matt Lupo's solo project Opul. The second is the full-length "Understanding Consequences" from Day Without Dawn, the short-lived group formed by members of EOTW in 2006 after previous band The Postman Syndrome disbanded. East Of The Wall Announces April Tour Dates

Tech/prog metal band East of the Wall has announced the details of an upcoming stateside April tour. Beginning with a home state kickoff show on April 12th, the tour will hit eleven cities across the East Coast and Midwestern U.S. Sponsored by Metal Underground.com, the trek will see East Of The Wall teamed up with LA-based stoner/groove metal outfit All Hail The Yeti for all shows, with Indiana’s math/experimental metal outfit Exotic Animal Petting Zoo also joining the tour on three dates.

In conjunction with the new tour, East of the Wall will also issue a high-quality LP pressing of their previously out-of-print debut full-length, "Farmer’s Almanac." Initially released on CD through Forgotten Empire Records in 2008, this 2013 edition of the "Farmer’s Almanac" broadcasts the entire maiden album performed by the band’s earliest lineup and is hitting the streets via Nefarious Industries. It has been remastered at Menegroth, The Thousand Caves by Colin Marston, who originally recorded and mixed the album, and supplied guest guitar tracks during the recording sessions.

East Of The Wall Releases Charity Demo

New Jersey progressive metal unit East of the Wall has posted a new digital single to benefit Translator Audio, the NYC-based studio having been completely destroyed when Hurricane Sandy blasted the East Coast in October.

Translator Audio was the place countless bands have recorded material, including Keelhaul, Unsane, Pelican, Cave In, Made Out Of Babies, Rosetta, and more, including where East the Wall recorded the 2011-released "The Apologist" LP.

In order to raise money for the studio’s reconstruction fund, East of the Wall is releasing a demo of a track scheduled for the group's yet-to-be-recorded upcoming album, which will be released later this year via Translation Loss Records.

The track, titled “I'm Always Fighting Drago,” is the first to feature the band's revamped lineup, which still includes drummer Seth Rheam, guitarist/vocalist Matt Lupo, and guitarist/vocalist Chris Alfano, along with new guitarist Ray Suhy and guitarist/vocalist Greg Kuter filling the holes left by departing members Brett Bamberger (bass/vocals) and Kevin Conway (guitar/vocals).

Suhy (also guitarist for The Baltic Sea) has been performing and writing with East of the Wall for over a year, first as a touring guitarist, and then joining as a full member when Conway left the band last April. Shortly afterwards, Bamberger left the band to join Revocation full-time. After some restructuring, Alfano moved to bass and Kuter was added, completing the lineup, and in the process adding the strongest melodic vocal element the band has ever produced. More...

Translator Audio Destroyed By Hurricane

East of the Wall has checked in with the following announcement about Translator Audio Studio being destroyed by the recent east coast hurricane:

"The studio we recorded The Apologist at, Translator Audio, was just COMPLETELY DESTROYED by Hurricane Sandy and they're taking donations to get back on their feet.

"The real tragedy is that they had just moved to a new location, built a beautiful brand new studio from scratch, and opened their doors 3 WEEKS ago.

"Read these two posts: The first one is about the grand opening, and the second one is about the flood. Back to back, it's heartbreaking.

"Andrew Schneider is not just one of the most talented producers and engineers in the scene, but he's also one of the best people we know in the local music scene.

So, please, if you could help out and DONATE RIGHT HERE to help rebuild his studio, you'd be doing a great thing and I promise any food you eat today will taste way better."
