The Summer Slaughter Tour At Concord Music Hall

I'll admit that I've been out of the death metal scene for a few years and mostly listening to a lot of already established artists at the expense of new ones. In fact, I haven't been to a Summer Slaughter since 2011. So it was good to see a concert full of artists who I mostly haven't seen yet. Some really impressed me, other didn't. Either way, I wanted to be surprised by hearing artists who I mostly wasn't familiar with.

This year's Summer Slaughter Tour was primarily backed by Sumerian Records (who were also a major backer of Chicago Open Air) as a promotion of Sumerian's upcoming entry into films with American Satan. I'd normally have a problem with the biggest annual heavy metal tour in North America being rendered into a commercial for something completely unrelated but the former bearer of that torch was really just an advertisement for Monster Energy Drink. Pit Stories: Knocked Out Before The Show

Gather 'round metal heads, it's story time!

That's right, we're back for your Tuesday Pit Story, this time from Dan Gargiulo of U.S. outfit Revocation.

For this week's tale, Dan shares a story about getting knocked out quite unexpectedly in Boston... in full view of a future band member. Gargiulo tells the story like this:

I was about 19 and a band I was in played a show in Boston. I was watching one of the openers fairly close to the front row. Next thing I know I'm having a dream about some clouds and stuff, but a few moments later I regained consciousness and my buddies were asking if I was alright.

Apparently a pit busted out and before I even realized it, some dude cracked me in the jaw hard enough to knock out a skinny teenager. I drank some water and I was awake but definitely confused and I didn't really know where I was. We were on next so I just got up on stage and did my thing. I'm told we played alright, but I don't remember many details from that night. I wonder if I had a concussion?

Anyway I'd love to file that under "embarrassing scenarios that nobody but me remembers", but I can't, because one of the attendees of that show was none other than David Davidson, who I would end up meeting a few years later. When I joined Revocation, we had some laughs over that story.

Revocation's new album "Great Is Our Sin" is coming July 22nd via Metal Blade Records. A lyric video off the release is available below. The band also currently on tour in North America - get a full list of upcoming dates right here. More...

Revocation Announces "Great Is Our Sin"

Revocation's new album "Great Is Our Sin" is coming July 22nd via Metal Blade Records, with the label boasting this is the band's "most dynamic, boundary-pushing and weighty release to date."

The first song from the album entitled "Communion" is available for streaming below, and you can also pre-order at this location. Frontman Dave Davidson commented on the first track: "'Communion' is the fastest song we've recorded to date and while it's blistering in terms of speed there are also some proggy elements present to add contrast to the aggression."

Reuniting with producer Zeuss (Hatebreed, Bleeding Through), who also helmed "Deathless" and 2012's "Teratogenesis" EP, the record packs the requisite punch, yet retains the organic feel with which it was conceived.

While the songs come together to make for a cohesive record that is engaging from front to back, they are further united by the lyrical concept penned by Davidson. The title itself appropriated from Charles Darwin's quote: "If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin," Davidson went about building a theme that was not only fittingly expansive, but also had real resonance with regard to contemporary society. "The concept revolves around the folly of man throughout the ages. Some themes come from historical references that are hundreds of years old, yet sadly these themes are still very relevant today due to mankind's refusal to learn from the lessons history has taught us, time and time again."
