While metal bands of pretty much any sub-genre can be found all over the world, different areas have become well known for specific sounds: the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Scandinavian black metal, Bay Area thrash, and so on. But metal continues to spread and evolve across the planet, and now the various Middle Eastern nations are not only developing their own underground scene, but also inspiring a traditional Arabic sound in metal bands from other countries.
Israeli act Orphaned Land may be one of the most well known, with latest album “All Is One” nearing release through Century Media, but there are many more just waiting to be explored in our never ending quest to unearth the metal underground.
Today we’ll cover three lesser known bands either residing in or strongly influenced by the Middle East. If you dig these acts but want something more on the power or progressive side, be sure to also check out Myrath, which was covered in our look at bands getting exposure through the Prog Power USA festival.
Currently down to three members and now seeking a new keyboardist for live shows, Egyptian outfit Sand Aura released debut full-length album “Elegy of the Orient” last year. The album can be ordered directly through the band’s website or streamed in its entirety via Bandcamp.
Sand Aura covers a whole lot of ground sound-wise, working off a proto death metal base with deep and guttural vocals, adding in a folksy edge, and then also bringing out clean female vocals. Give it a listen and decide how it sounds yourself through the player below.
Live Prog has posted a new video interview online with vocalists Sarah and Florent from Paris based death metal act Arkan. Check out the interview here or in the player below. Arkan also released the new album "Salam" early last year (reviewed here).

SoM: How did you discover ARKAN?
Kobi: I heard about them from our fan club manager, Nathalie Van Aalst.
SoM: How did the 2010 "Tour Against Racism" came to life?
Kobi: Nathalie told me they would fit perfectly on a bill with us, so I had a listen and immediately noticed we are from the same musical tree. Arkan were great on the tour and I think they gained many new fans, including me and my band mates.
SoM: How did you end up participating to the "Salam" album and how do you feel about it?
Kobi: [ARKAN drummer] Foued Moukid contacted me and suggested the idea. I was immediately happy about it so he sent me a detailed letter with the songs and references, and we took it from there. It felt just great and I am honoured. Furthermore I truly loved the lyrics, as it speaks about the Holy Land, the one we like to describe as "Orphaned Land". I am attached to the lyrics in all languages and especially to the highest form of language ever invented - MUSIC. As an artist, I know that ARKAN's album is their child, and I know it meant a lot to them to let me be a part of it. We share the same feelings.More...

"The celebrations were done with joy and good surprises for some of us. The new year heralds good omens. The band focuses now on preparing several gigs and a tour is being planned.
"More details to come as soon as we get the confirmations. Happy New Year to all!"
Season of Mist recently announced the signing of ARKAN, led by ex-THE OLD DEAD TREE drummer Foued Moukid. Here is the man's comment on the band's signing to the label:
"Season of Mist is a label well known for the variety and the prestige of its catalogue. ARKAN's first album "Hilal" is a mix of tones and moods, a journey between the magic of the south and the power of the north. It was obvious for us to sign with such a record company. What's more, working with such enthusiastic people about music is more than sharing a professional relationship, it is a human adventure. For all these reasons, we are very proud to work with Season of Mist."
The band's first album is entitled "Hilal" and will hit the stores on June 16th.
