Back in 2005, Alcest released a two song EP called “Le Secret,” a gem that eventually would cause a stir in the hornet nest that is the black metal community. If you didn't gather by the title, Alcest is a French band, and one masterminded by front-man Neige. With a strong pedigree in the French black metal scene, Neige was a musician who not only came forward in the 00s with multiple acts in Alcest and Amesoeurs, but also made contributions to essential French albums from the likes of Mortifera and Peste Noire. While Norway and the adjacent Scandinavian realms are often thought of as the wintery fortress of black metal, the French have long held their own with a melancholic and melodic take on the genre including the infamous Les Légions Noires whom you can read about in a previous Metal Underground Sunday Old School article.
So, what was so special about Neige’s little two song EP? Well for one it wasn’t little at all. It was nearly 30 minutes long and an infusion of 90s shoegaze, post-rock, and perfectly distilled black metal. More...
Krallice has released a free EP of Orphan cover songs in tribute to Brendan Majewski. Profound Lore Records issued the following announcement about the release:
"Krallice just released a three-song Orphan covers EP (entitled 'Orphan Of Sickness') for download. This is Krallice's tribute to Orphan bassist Brendan Majewski who tragically passed away earlier this year, this past Jan. Go here to download the EP for free. It absolutely crushes."

MetalSucks.net has announced two free compilations coming early next year, featuring underground bands from the ever growing New York City metal scene. Entitled "NYC Sucks," Volume 1 will contain 14 songs by as many bands and will be released on January 18th. Volume 2, containing 13 tracks, will be released on February 22nd. Both compilations will be available for download on MetalSucks, will contain high-quality 320kbps MP3s, and will include a PDF of digital liner notes with information about all the bands.

Ireland's ALTAR OF PLAGUES will be teaming up with dark metal band Velnias this summer to embark on a North American tour beginning in July and heading into August. Brooklyn black metal band Castevet has completed work on their debut album. Entitled “Mounds Of Ash,” the new album was recordedin the Thousand Caves Studios by Colin Marston of KRALLICE. The album will be released on May 25th through Profound Lore Records.

TOMBS has announced more spring tour dates in support of their "Winter Hours" album. The band is currently on tour working their way to and from South By Southwest in Austin, TX. TOMBS will then join LUDICRA and KRALLICE for a handful of shows in the north east. The Brooklyn trio has also been confirmed for Maryland Deathfest and Ithaca Underground's Big Day In fest. On the heels of "Pantheon Of The Lesser," their second album for Important Records, and subsequent features in Decibel, Metal Maniacs, and Terrorizer, Portland, Maine quartet OCEAN is joining Virginia trio SALOME (featuring members of AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED) for a night of epic doom February 15 at Brooklyn, New York's Public Assembly (formerly Galapagos) as part of the third installment of Pitchfork's monthly SHOW NO MERCY Showcase. (The first two events were headlined by Nachtmystium/Velnius and Skeletonwitch/Cannabis Corpse, respectively.)
OCEAN and SALOME will be joined by Boston riff rockers RIFF CANNON and Brooklyn's own icy minimalist doom crew BATILLUS. Future SHOW NO MERCY events will include Tombs, Crucifier, Wetnurse, Krieg, and Krallice, among others.
Each month, artist SELDON HUNT (Neurosis, Khanate, Jesu, Isis, etc.) will create original SHOW NO MERCY flyer designs. The series is organized by BRANDON STOSUY, who writes Pitchfork's monthly metal column, SHOW NO MERCY.
The Scion Rock Fest will take place on Saturday, February 28th at the Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia. The show will go from noon until midnight and attendees must be at least 18 years old. The line-up is as follows:
