Latest At The Gates News
Below is our complete At The Gates news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
This week in Sunday Old School we return to the 90's, having revisited the late 1960's and early 70's with Black Sabbath, Budgie, and Blue Cheer. While the 90's are less than twenty years ago, can you imagine a time before melodic death metal and even metalcore cannibalized the same melodeath riffs over and over ad nauseum? Enough said. Nearly twenty years ago, Swedish band At The Gates formed and soon helped popularized a new sound called melodic death metal, which was largely associated with Gothenburg scene due to the efforts of In Flames and Dark Tranquillity around the same time. The imitators have been many and in recent years the line between melodic death metal and melodic metalcore has blurred so much that it is often difficult to tell the difference between the two.
At the Gates did not remain together for even a decade, but their impact on the metal landscape has been enormous. The band remained entrenched in the underground as their first few albums suffered from 80's quality (read: low) production. It was not until 1996's "Slaughter of the Soul" that had significantly better production and was released by Earache Records that the band started to break into the mainstream a little more. After their breakup, drummer Adrian Erlandsson, bassist Jonas Björler, and guitarist Anders Björler went on to form The Haunted, while Lindberg has been in bands such as The Crown, Lock Up, Nightrage, The Great Deceiver and Disfear.
Newer metalheads can check out At The Gates to see where so many modern bands have drawn their influences from.
The video below is a live track lifted from the 2008 reissue of the classic album "Slaughter Of The Soul" that comes with a bonus DVD. The DVD features a recently unearthed live show filmed in Krakow Poland in 1995. More videos follow after the jump.

"Paradise Lost has been one of my favourite bands since I first heard them in 1990. When my fellow BRUJERIA member Jeff Walker told me that PL were looking for a drummer I got in contact with Greg straight away. After a few chats and emails I was on my way to the audition. I had learnt 10 songs out of their last setlist, but after playing only 4 songs Nick said, 'the job is yours if you want it'. Great success!! I look forward to growing even older with the lads and rocking hard with them live!!!!" More...

At The Gates has posted the second part of their tour diary, chronicling their reunion tour across the U.S. with Municipal Waste and Toxic Holocaust.
"Almost a week into the tour now...
"Today, we hit Chicago around noon. It's great to be back. The hometown of awesome bands like Master/Deathstrike, Devastation, Terminal Death, Macabre, Sindrome etc; and today hosting greats such as the amazing Nachtmystium! We invited the Devastation dudes to the show tonite, so perhaps a cover version of Cranial Hemorrhage? Hehe ;D
"It's an early show today; then off to the afterparty at Kumas where the official At the gates-burger is introduced tonight. Adrian is sooo happy...
"The last two Canadadian shows were great. Last night in Toronto was sold out and they really packed the place full. During the Municipal Waste show the crowd produced the best "wall of death" i..ve seen in a good while!
"We also added an extra song to the set: Unto others, after Dave Witte (From the Waste) had been at us for a while about that song...and the response was killer. Toxic Holocaust played on an afterparty at Catacombs in Montreal; a great punk bar run by the awesome Janick from After The Bombs. Toxic played a great set and the whole touring family had a good evening. I..m pretty sure I even saw Anders in the pit!
"There are some pictures from the Montreal show online. Check them out here.
"The Worcester show was fun too, with friends from Hope Conspiracy, Killswitch Engage etc hanging out and making the night special. It's a hard venue to play since it's an old theatre made totally out of concrete. The sound is very bouncy and all you hear is the echo from the back of the hall hitting you onstage with some milliseconds delay. Anyway, this was probably the best sounding Worcester gig (on stage) ever, and people were insane. Good times indeed."
More photos from the road are also available on the original blog post.
At The Gates has posted the first of their US tour diary entries from their US tour with Darkest Hour, Municipal Waste and Toxic Holocaust:
"We arrived this Tuesday in New York. I (Anders) got in to JFK and took the bus across town to meet the other guys @ Newark airport.
"Our sound engineer Bo missed his connecting flight out of Amsterdam, and on top of that his bag was a.w.o.l upon arrival in JFK. And if that wasn't enough, he got an ear infection resulting in high fever, massive pain & distorted mono hearing. He seemed slightly better today. Got his bag from the airport and everything, but he's still feeling pretty shit.
"The first two gigs at Irving plaza were amazing. It was great to see the other bands on the bill enjoying some great crowd response, It was my (Tomas) impression that all bands have had really good gigs so far. The first gig was without AC, so it was like 120 degrees on stage :/
"We are enjoying this tour a lot so far, and it's amazing to see the crowd response after 12 years of silence. Thanks to all the people coming out and making this a special event."
You can check out some photos from the tour on At The Gates' MySpace blog as well.
