Latest Exodus News
Below is our complete Exodus news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
There's been no shortage of hot-button weekly metal news lately - well, very little shortage, anyway; sometimes we at the Metalunderground.com Official Podcast (listen here) are forced to make shit up - and perhaps the most hotly contested announcement is that of the big ol' Singer Change. Replace a bassist or keyboardist and no one bats an eye. Replace a guitarist or drummer and healthy debate ensues. Replace a singer and everyone loses their minds.
It happened in March when Alissa White-Gluz (ex-The Agonist) stepped into the shoes of veteran Arch Enemy frontwoman Angela Gossow, and now it's happened again on the Left Coast: Bay Area thrashers Exodus have relieved vocalist Rob Dukes of his duties after nine years and four albums of service, making way for the return of previous frontman Steve "Zetro" Souza. Reactions have been mixed and somewhat heated, and here to discuss just that is your fabulous co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure).
Next, Mike and dashing co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) tackle the fresh new single "Rusted Nail" from Swedish metal giants In Flames, of which they both are confirmed fans for life. However, reactions to this song are mixed as well, and the overall attitude toward the band's upcoming album "Siren Charms" is one of... shall we say, "cautious optimism."
Finally, Mike offers his initial reaction to the upcoming album "Origins" from Swiss folk metal heroes Eluveitie. He was blessed with an early promo for review, and concludes that this effort combines elements of the band's past and present and is likely to satisfy fans old and new alike.

Exodus recently announced the departure of vocalist Rob Dukes and the return of former member Steve "Zetro" Souza. Dukes has now issued the following statement about parting ways with the band:
"I'm no longer the singer of Exodus. I'm grateful for the last 9 years. I've had the experience of touring the world playing music.
"I was just a regular guy, a fan, and I got the chance to front a legendary band while having no prior experience of being a singer. I had no idea what I was doing and made it up as I was going along.
"It was a great chapter of my life, I'm bummed it ended with them, but I have another band Generation Kill. So I will concentrate on that right now and continue to build hot rods and build a car to race in the Baja 1000. I will be riding my motorcycle all over this beautiful country every chance I get, that's the next chapter of my life." More...
The American thrash metal legends in Exodus announced they have parted company with vocalist Rob Dukes, who recorded three albums with the veterans since joining in 2005, following the band's bitter second split with Souza. A statement from Exodus guitarist Gary Holt reads as follows:
"As a band, we all had to make a very difficult choice to part ways with Rob Dukes. We have nothing but love and admiration for him and the deepest gratitude for the hard work he has put in and the great work on some killer records. But at this time, Tom, Lee, Jack and myself thought a change was necessary and the unanimous choice going forward was to welcome back Steve Souza to the fold!"
Souza added: "I spent a great part of my life with Exodus, that blood flows through me, even not being in the band for the past 10 years, you can’t erase that chemistry. I’m very excited!"
Since leaving Exodus in 2005, Steve Souza has kept busy with such projects as Dublin Death Patrol and Hatriot. Exodus are currently working on their eleventh studio album, which will be the sixth to feature the returning vocalist.
San Francisco's veteran thrashers in Exodus have entered a studio in Northern California with producer Andy Sneap to record their eleventh album.
Guitarist and songwriter Gary Holt has issued the following update:
“We are well into drum tracks; everything is going super smooth and Tom [Hunting] is just killing it! Best drum sound this band has ever laid down - sounds just simply pummeling! Only one more song and some B sides to go, then we go through things and make sure everything is up to par, and then time for guitars! Can't wait to add the crunch to these monsters. This is gonna be so goddamned heavy it ain't even funny! We couldn't be more stoked and pleased with how this record is coming along! Bludgeoning!”
Exodus performed at Kirk Von Hammett’s Fear FestEviL in San Francisco in early February. This May, the band will also play six shows as direct support to Slayer with openers Suicidal Tendencies before joining Guns N’ Roses, Avenged Sevenfold, and Kid Rock at this year’s Rock On The Range festival.

Joining Slayer as Special Guests for these shows are Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus, marking the first time Slayer and Suicidal have toured together since the 1990 European “Clash of the Titans” tour. Gary Holt, who continues to fill in for Slayer’s fallen guitarist Jeff Hanneman, will do double-duty as guitarist in his primary band, Exodus.
Tickets for Slayer/Suicidal/Exodus go on sale this Friday, January 24 - log onto www.slayer.net for ticketing information.
"Can't wait for this week of shows to happen,” said Slayer’s Kerry King. "LOVE Suicidal, and havent played with them in over 20 years! Everyone knows I'm a huge Exodus fan also. I guarantee you I will be watching every show from the stage! Going to be awesome!!!"
“It’s been 24 years since Suicidal Tendencies played with Slayer," added Suicidal Tendencies’ Mike Muir, "so it’s long overdue that we finally play some shows in the States together. I have lots of great memories from that tour, and know that there will be a lot more after these shows, for the band and the people. Can’t wait!"
Gary Holt states, " I am very excited to announce Exodus will be joining Suicidal Tendencies and the mighty Slayer in May for a short trip ending at the Rock on the Range! Double duty will have never been so much fun! Looking forward to this one in a big way! Let the mayhem begin!”
The dates will culminate for all three bands at the May 17th “Rock on The Range” rock festival in Columbus, OH, where they will share the stage with artists including Guns N’ Roses, Avenged Sevenfold, and Kid Rock.

Metallica guitarist and horror aficionado Kirk Hammett has announced Kirk Von Hammett's FEAR FestEvil, a multifaceted horror and music festival to take place at San Francisco's Regency Ballroom on February 7th and February 8th, 2014.
The inaugural event will feature highlights of Hammett's world famous Crypt Collection (including some of the most valuable horror collectibles in the world) inside a former Masonic temple, an extensive array of panels, live music, vendors and special guests.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to wander through out the venue and experience various "haunting areas" for one of a kind scares, and will even be able to take a taxidermy class on-site. Single day and full weekend tickets are available here.
"This will be the most sinister, evil, over the top horror and music festival to date," said Kirk Hammett. "I'm excited to bring horror fanatics, music fans, and other freaks together under the same roof in my hometown and can't wait to unleash my own personal horror collection for display."
Confirmed guests to appear include Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead), pioneering make-up artist and actor Tom Savini, legendary horror scribe John A. Russo (Night of the Living Dead), Anthrax co-founder Scott Ian, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist and horror enthusiast Slash, Heather Kangenkamp (Nightmare On Elm Street), Ron Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi Jr. and Sara Karloff, actresses P.J.Soles, Barbara Crampton, Patty Mullen, and Erika Eleniak, original Godzilla actor Haruo Nakajima, original Ultraman Satoshi "Bin" Furuya, Academy Award winning make-up artist Joel Harlow, Kane Hodder aka Jason Vorhees, tattoo artist and TV personality Amy Nicoletto, and more to be announced.
FEAR FestEvil will also feature live music with performances by Exodus and Carcass on Friday, February 7th (Hammett will make an appearance with the legendary Bay Area thrashers) and Death Angel, Orchid, and Death Division on Saturday, February 8th.
The 40 minute documentary "Out of the Black" has now been released online and now can be seen below. While it focuses on black metal, the clip features a variety of interviews with thrash and death bands.
The creators of the movie describe the clip as "a documentary about true black metal in America as compared to the European scene. A detailed examination of the musical and social origins of black metal and how black metal was influenced by American death metal and thrash, and European thrash. We also concentrated on the opinions of those outside of the black metal scene. We interviewed some of the godfathers of death metal and thrash to get their opinion."
Exodus will be playing at Kirk Von Hammet's Fear Festevil in 2013. The organizers of the fest comment:
"OH YES YES YES! Are we here at your lil' old Fear Festevil delighted to be able to confirm the appearance of legendary Bay Area thrashers Exodus on February 7, at the first FEAR FestEvil ever. The event takes place @ Regency Ballroom 1300 Van Ness Avenue San Francisco CA 94108."
Further details on the fest can be found at this location. The following press release was also issued about Exodus:
"When it comes to thrash metal, in particular Bay Area thrash, Exodus are one of the true Godfathers. Formed in 1980 by guitarist Tim Agnello, drummer Tom Hunting, bassist Carlton Melson and some other six-stringer called Kirk Hammett, Agnello soon left, allowing Hammett's guitar tech Gary Holt to step up and in. Hammett then stumbled across Paul Baloff, a demo was recorded, Hammett left to join some other upstarts, Rick Hunolt took the other guitar and the rest became history.
"Their 1984 debut Bonded By Blood is a stonewall genre classic, and with cranium crunching classics such as A Lesson In Violence, Strike Of The Beast and more… We can promise that this will not be a calm or gentle soiree more than an aural beatdown. The current line-up of Holt, Lee Altus on guitar, Hunting, Jack Gibson on bass and Rob Dukes on vocals has been in place since 2005. Exodus' last album was 2010's Exhibit B: The Human Condition on Nuclear Blast Records, and the band have just started working on new material for a prospective release later in 2014."

"Here at Bloodstock HQ we are excited to announce a whole batch of new additions for all three stages. There’s only seven weeks left to the most metal weekend of the year!! Have you got your tickets yet?!
"Opening Friday’s main stage, and fresh off the back of the release of ‘IV’, their first album in ten years, are British post metallers, Earthzone 9. The band are stoked to find their way to Catton Park’s hallowed ground, commenting 'Earthtone 9 have never played Bloodstock, so we could not be more excited! It's one of our only gigs this year, so we are truly going to make the most of it. There may well be some drinking!' You can pick up a free download of their single, ‘Horizon’s End’ at this location.

There’s yet more thrash for Bloodstock with Northern Irish upstarts Gama Bomb landing an opening slot on the Ronnie James Dio mainstage. The band is looking forward to churning up the Catton Park turf, commenting:
“Bloodstock: it’s just like Woodstock, but for heavy metal types, and replacing the love and peace with chips and Carling! And Slayer! Our UK fans have been asking for this for years, and now the dream is real. So pack your tent, back up your arse with bananas and send the word – The G-Bomb are comin’ to Bloodstock!"
The band’s fourth album, "The Terror Tapes," will be released next Monday 22nd April on AFM Records. Check out the new video for "Terrorscope" right here.
British heavy metal standard bearers Beholder also step in to an early mainstage slot on Saturday. Frontman Simon Hall says “For Beholder to actually be asked to do this, without me dropping to my knees and pleading like a bitch is a true acknowledgment of where the band is right now. To be on the best Bloodstock line-up ever is something we’re not going to approach lightly, and on Saturday 10th August, let’s show the rest of the world how true British Metal fans rule all!!”

Rumors have been circulating of a breakup after Exodus cancelled its appearance at the Maryland Deathfest, and the group has now checked in with the following statement about the status of the band:
"We have recently observed a whirlwind of speculation, conspiracy theories, and just plain ole dumb-assed comments on the internet regarding Exodus' future and that of Gary Holt's commitment to this band. The following is an attempt to shed some light on actual facts, as well as trying to clear the air.
"The reason we cancelled our appearance at this years Maryland Death Fest was, in fact, due to Gary's commitment to his sudden and seriously ill father. Actually, just days prior to the start of the Metal Alliance tour, we were making arrangements to have someone fill in for Gary due to his unknown status. As things worked out, his father was able to recover to a somewhat stable condition, yet he is still not 'out of the woods' and continues to be a closely monitored. More...

The tour includes Expire who played last year, California powerhouse Alpha & Omega, Power Trip who is an up-and-coming hardcore band from Texas, and Twitching Tongues.
