Below is our complete Y&T news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
It's never a happy introduction to an edition of Sunday Old School when we need to kick things off with a tribute. However, following the sad passing of Leonard Haze at the age of 61, it feels appropriate to finally look back at his work with one of America's most underrated heavy metal groups, whose influence has been cited by many but overlooked by more. Of course, I am referring to Yesterday & Today, who would become better known as Y&T.
The band was formed in Oakland, California by Haze, along with Bob Gardner and Wayne Stitzer, who performed bass and keyboards respectively in 1982. Following a brief stint with Robin Irons on guitar and vocals, they replaced him with a guitarist named Dave Meniketti, who also handled vocal duties. Shortly afterwards, they were invited to perform their first gig, which consisted entirely of cover songs and was one of the few, if not only, performance with Wayne Stitzer, who quit a little while later, leading Gardner to take over on keyboards and a new bass player named Phil Kennemore, though Gardner himself would leave in 1974, to be replaced by Joey Alves. Former Y&T drummer Leonard Haze has passed away at the age of 61 after suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The drummer co-wrote such songs as "Hurricane" and "Black Tiger" and was scheduled to support Y&T at two Californian shows with his band Hazexperience. Y&T vocalist Dave Meniketti broke the news with an online post that read:
"It is with shock and sadness that I type this. Leonard Haze, the legendary drummer, and a guy I spent decades with creating great music together, has passed away at 61.
"This, just a few days after his birthday. I just woke up to this news, as I'm in Germany, and immediately called his wife, Kelly. She confirmed that Leonard had passed away in his sleep sometime between noon and 7.30pm on Sunday, September 11. More...
American hard rock/heavy metal veterans Y&T have announced that Brad Long, who performed with the group on the Facemelter tour last year, will be the band's permanent bassist from now on.
Long is stepping in to replace original bass player Phil Kennemore, who sadly passed away at the beginning of the year after a struggle with cancer.
Phil Kennemore, the bass player of American heavy metal veterans Y&T, passed away this morning (January 7th) as a result of metastatic cancer. He was fifty seven years old. A message from Y&T frontman Dave Meniketti reads as follows:
"It is with profound sadness and disbelief that I tell you that my best buddy for 37 years passed away this morning, January 7th, 2011 at 1 AM at Stanford Hospital. Bravely and steadfastly battling the horrible spectacle of lung cancer, at the end he was surrounded by his family members, and the Y&T family up until his final breath.
"All the beautiful things that I could say about my buddy Phil could never be summed up in a short sentence or two, and I promise that I will be back to say so much more about how I feel about him and his talents in due time. But for now, at 3 AM, after just having returned home from his passing, let me at least put this out there.
"Phil Kennemore was not only a sweet and passionate man with his life, friends and family, but as an artist, he also had that rare ability to say what was on his mind with the most eloquent, clever, and to-the-point lyrics, yet could turn it on it's head in a second with some other viewpoint on reality and nail the point dead center. He was able to do what very few can - say the things that others have been thinking, but could never quite seem to put into words. He has always had a keen knack for doing that. More...
Phil Kennemeore, the bassist of American heavy metal veterans Y&T (also known as Yesterday & Tomorrow,) has announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer. A message from Kennemeore reads as follows:
"To all of my dear friends and fans around the world and on the forum, up to now you haven't heard much information (other than about my extreme back pain) because there really hasn't been much until now. I hated leaving you all in the dark but I didn't want to say anything until there was something conclusive to say. We do have a lot more information now. The number one thing you need to know is that I have cancer. It wasn't absolutely formally diagnosed until yesterday.
"With the bad news I also got the good news that along with surgery and treatments, I will be back rockin' and rollin'. I'll be getting a hip replacement as well as back surgery, which means I'll also be more agile. The doctor said that this is treatable and I'll be walking out of this place and I'll be able to go on the road and do everything I need to do to continue my rock 'n' roll life, in due time.
"I wanted to thank everyone for your well wishes. I've been sitting here in the hospital reading all of the things that you've all posted online, and I want you to know it means so very much to me to see how much I am loved, supported, and missed. I can really feel the love as I'm reading. I love reading your posts on the web site forum, and, in fact, I need to hear it. From here on out, whatever thoughts and feelings you have, please know that I wish that I could personally respond to each and every one of you, but I'm not able to right now. More...
Glyder released their third album, "Yesterday Today and Tomorrow," in the U.S. today via Steamhammer/SPV. The album includes artwork from Mark Wilkinson as well as a guest solo on the title track by Dave Menketti of Y&T. August 2009 saw GLYDER play one of their biggest shows yet, opening for Metallica Marlay Park Dublin.
Head of A&R Olly Hahn had the following to say about the signing of GLYDER: "With GLYDER we signed one of the finest rock bands from Ireland. They rock, they have catchy melodies and when they play, they play their asses off. What more can you ask for!"
Bay Area heavy metal veterans Y&T has posted their new music video online for the song, "I'm Coming Home." You can check it out below. Pittsburgh melodic metal band ICARUS WITCH has announced a change in their lead vocalist. In a statement from the band's official site they explained the situation:
"We are excited to announce yet another massive shift in our ranks as we welcome new vocalist Christopher Shaner to the ICARUS WITCH circle and part ways amicably with original vocalist, Matthew Bizilia. Matthew's contributions to the band have been immeasurable over the past six years. While this was a serious decision for both parties, professional differences of opinion led to the change. Bizilia is a phenomenal talent who will always be a part of the Witch family as we wish him much success on his future ventures."
Incoming vocalist and Erie, Pennsylvania native Shaner is a long time friend and collaborator of guitarist Quinn Lukas. Before Quinn moved to Pittsburgh to join ICARUS WITCH in 2006, he had worked on various musical projects with the singer. Much like the recent acquisition of second guitarist Ed Skero, the choice to add Christopher to the band was based on a combination of what he brings to the lineup personally, musically and professionally. His powerful vocal range, sense of harmony and intense work ethic are a perfect fit for the next phase of this band. Writing for the follow-up to Draw Down The Moon has already commenced with the new recruits and it promises to be the band's most diverse, melodic and epic release ever. More...
American heavy metal band Y&T has announced that they have signed to Frontiers Records for thier new studio album, "Facemelter." This will be the bands first studio album in thirteen years and will be released on May 21st.
"What a great feeling to dive back into making new Y&T music," states frontman Dave Meniketti. "After being away from it for this long, the anticipation of writing a new CD worth of material was, at first, a bit scary, but as soon as we started up I was happy to find how natural it was to get right back in it again. I think we're going to have to keep this up, because musically and emotionally, we still have a lot to say!"
"It's ridiculous that we waited so long to make a new record," adds bassist Phil Kennemore. "In creating new music for Facemelter, I rediscovered the most important thing for any artist, and that is to continue creating . . . it feeds my soul. My hope for Facemelter is that people might just find a few new favorite Y&T songs."

"Rock Against Diabetes 2008" was held at Club Rox in Las Vegas, Nevada. The club was kind enough to provide R.A.D. with a venue for the two-day event. Many artists gave of themselves to support the cause, which will not be forgotten by all of us that struggle with diabetes on a daily basis.
I got the chance to talk with the event founder and organizer, Darrin Buchanan, and he explained how all of this came about. Two years ago, Darrin's foot died on him virtually over night. He underwent a number of tests and the result was diabetes and that part of his foot would need to be removed. Here is a 36 year old man with a wife and young daughter and he was facing the fight of his life. From that experience Rock Against Diabetes began. The first event was held is Canada and Darrin, in his wheelchair, was keeping the show flowing and the event was a success. A chain of events led to a second surgery to remove more of Darrin's leg from the knee down, and now Darrin would be walking again after 2 years with the help of a prosthetic leg. It was fantastic to see Darrin running around for two days along with his lovely wife Lindsey. They are my heroes! I am sure glad we are on the same team in this daily fight that we diabetics face each day. They give me strength and hope! More...

While the bands on Rock Against Diabetes may not be the favorites to the majority of our readership, they represent some well-known names from the 80s metal scene. Moreover, the event represents a good cause, and I'm proud to be involved with spreading the word about the Rock Against Diabetes benefit concert. Diabetes affects millions of people and even if not directly affected, nearly everyone knows someone who has been affected directly or indirectly by diabetes. Several of the staff on Metalunderground.com have been affected to various degrees.
Ellie Timms, a freelance photographer and journalist who will be covering the event for Metalunderground.com, is a diabetic herself and has been deeply affected by the disease. Discussing the importance of the event, Ellie commented: "Being a diabetic and coming from a family of diabetics, I know the harsh reality of how diabetes can and will slowly kill you if you're not given the proper education and treatment. Rock Against Diabetes is fighting for world-wide awareness that education, nutrition, exercise and research can forever change and give quality of life to diabetics. WE DO NOT HAVE TO DIE!"
So help us spread the word about this event and make it as big a success as it can be!
