Graspop Metal Meeting: Day Three

The final day of a festival always seems to be the most subdued and relaxed, most likely a result of tiredness, but with such a solid lineup to look forward to, who has time to take it easy? Graspop Metal Meeting still had plenty to offer the head bangers on this Sunday, with things getting off to a great start at the second main stage, where New Zealand hard rockers, Like A Storm got things underway. This was another case of checking out a band I had never heard of and they proved well worth a gamble, as their brand of hard rock with a tinge of alternative metal was the perfect way to wake up the sleepy unwashed and accentuate a few hang overs. Like The Dead Daisies two days before, Like A Storm are all about having a good time. It's rock the way it was designed to be, a lot of fun and high energy, though they put their own, native stamp on things by utilising the didgeridoo, which believe it or not, actually works really well with their music. The instrument was first used in a solo performance, before being brought out again for their song, "Love the Way You Hate Me," and there were other surprises in store too, most notably a cover of the Coolio hit, "Gangsta's Paradise." A great way to start the day.

A little bit of Pop Evil followed, which continued the theme of enjoyable hard rock, before the day's first trip to the Marquee came, this time to check out Winterfylleth. This was another band I was unfamiliar with, despite seeing the name in passing a number of times. I assumed from the name that they were a black metal group, but there's a lot more to them than that. They display an amazing musical talent which goes beyond the simple goal of making music just to be extreme, which some bands are guilty of, and don't conform to the uniform of corpse paint and spikes out of a mistaken sense of obligation, something else young black metal groups have done from time to time. Winterfylleth are another outfit that let the music do most of the talking, which is guaranteed to win over newcomers and please fans who turned up to see these metal Mancunians. More...

Sunday Old School: Septicflesh

Greece is a country as fascinating as it is beautiful, though it’s had plenty of problems to contend with over the years, in recent times being one of the countries worst hit by the global financial crisis. Such harshness, as well as a history both violent and cultured, seem to be a perfect place for metal music to be born and thrive, and so it is that this week, we’ll take a look at one of their best known contributions to the field, Septicflesh.

Septic Flesh was formed in the Greek capital city of Athens in 1990 by bassist/vocalist, Spiros Antoniou, with his younger brother Christos Antoniou on guitar, as well as second guitarist Sotiris Vayenas. Nineteen months after coming together, the group released their first demo, "Temple of the Lost Race," which didn’t take long to sell out and is now a highly sought after collectable. It was songs from this demo, as well as, "Morpheus (The Dreamlord,") which helped the band grab the attention of Holy Records, who signed the band up and released their debut full length album, "Mystic Places of Dawn" in 1994. The record was co-produced by former Rotting Christ keyboardist, Magus Wampyr and is still considered to be one of the best releases by Septic Flesh, as well as one of the best of the year, a notable feat considering this was the same year Emperor released, "In the Nightshade Eclipse" and Mayhem unleashed, "De Mysteriis dom Sathanas." Septicflesh comments: "We now present our second video clip since our founding. The first was 'The Eldest Cosmonaut' from the album 'A Fallen Temple.' This time we chose the song 'Prometheus' from our latest album 'Titan.'

"The storyline revolves around the theme of transformation and crossing the thin line between predator and prey. It is something that literally delivers food for thought. Provoking, disturbing, resisting, surviving the ordeal... " More...

Septicflesh Recruits New Drummer

Following the departure of long-time percussionist Fotis Benardo, Septicflesh now welcomes drummer Kerim “Krimh” Lechner (Decapitated, Behemoth ) to its ranks and the band is excited to start this new chapter with Kerim and look forward to get back on the road.

Krimh comments: "I feel very honored to join such a great band which has been one of my favorites since years. Septicflesh’s music is outstanding and unique. It is melodic and heavy but with groove. Exactly how I like it! I can't wait to start a new chapter with SF and see you on the road."

The Austrian drummer has already gained a strong reputation for his work with Decapitated (2009 - 2012). Before playing with the Polish death metal act he was part of the symphonic black metal band Thorns Of Ivy (2006 - 2009). Furthermore Lechner released a solo album entitled "Explore" in 2013 and helped Behemoth out on tour, while regular drummer Zbigniew Robert Prominski underwent surgery. More...

"It has come to our attention that a tour with Deicide and Marduk has been announced. This was unfortunately an error, seeing as we already declined this offer. As to why this was broadcast in the first place we can but speculate, but most likely it’s a case of miscommunication." More...
