The seeds of 40 Below Summer were sown in 1998, when drummer and Peruvian native Carlos Aguilar started jamming with singer Illidge. Joe D’Amico came into the fold next, followed by Jordan Plingos and Puerto Rican-born Hector Graziani. A self-released EP called Sideshow Freaks and constant gigging in New Jersey and New York helped foster a buzz about the band, and after numerous showcases on both coasts, a deal was signed with London/Sire Records. Their major label debut, Invitation To The Dance, was rele ased in October of 2001, produced by the legendary GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Kittie).
Following one label-supported run on the Jagermeister Music Tour, with Drowning Pool, Coal Chamber, and Ill Nino, making things work on their own is exactly what 40 Below Summer did – with the help of an incredibly devoted and growing fan base. “It’s pretty uplifting, especially when we’re just out in a van playing smaller clubs, and the kids are crazy,” continues Plingos. “They follow us, they’re just so psyched for you to be there, they want to talk to you and tell you what they thought about the show. It’s just nuts to see what five guys in a van can do.
“We’re not a nu-metal band,” says Illidge firmly. “We have elements of nu-metal in us; we have elements of old school metal in us. We have elements of hardcore and straight-up rock and folk and even some jazz and funk. We don’t want to be pigeonholed. We’re an aggressive rock band, and rock explores a little bit of everything.”
With The Mourning After ready for release, 40 Below Summer is preparing to do what they do best – tour as much as possible – and bring their hardcore fans a killer new album, an energized band, and an uncompromised outlook. “Everything feels much better,” says Aguilar. “Every single experience, every single show, the way we recorded this album, the songwriting – everything feels like it’s being done by a band again.”
“The music has to always come first,” confirms Illidge. “The music and the band itself have to come before anything else, and then you deal with the rest.”

Former 40 BELOW SUMMER bassist Hector "Hook" Graziani has been forced to leave his new band BLACK MARKET HERO after losing "a big percentage" of his hearing through years of rehearsing and performing. His official statement on the matter reads as follows:
"I never thought that this day would ever come, but what I'm about to say is one of the most hardest and most difficult things to do; so, I'll do it very short and sincerely...
"After thirteen years of non-stop playing, recording, performing music, touring and everything with it, I have to stop doing what I love doing the most... Why? Because I really never took care of my ears, I now have lost a big percentage of my hearing. I always took care and only thought about music, my bandmates, my fans and rock n' roll; but right now I have to take care of myself. So, I'm leaving my new band BLACK MARKET HERO. I wish my brothers in that band the best because they are the best and most dedicated muscians I've ever known. I also want to take this time to deeply thank 40 BELOW SUMMER (Max, Joey, Carlos and Jordan) for rescuing me, bringing me back to music and giving me the best years of my life. Also part of those amazing years have been made possible because of all the dedicated, loyal and undying supportive fans — you all know who you are and you are all the best! I also want to thank all the bands I shared the stage with... the tours, the backstage and onstage moments, as well as all those crazy Jager nights, will always live in my heart.
"To my family, gracias de todo corazon. Thanks for always supporting and accepting my absence all these years.
"To all my fellow muscians, please protect your ears don't wait until it's too late to do so.
"ROCK N' ROLL will always live in me and I will alway live in ROCK N' ROLL."

Five members (two have since left the band) of Candiria reportedly won a $29 million verdict yesterday as a result of their 2002 van accident. On the losing end of the verdict, according to the New York Post and attorney Daniel O'Toole, is Paige Transportation Inc., who owned the tractor trailer that collided with Candiria's van. No further information has been disclosed at this time.
Members of Candiria were involved in a serious vehicle accident when their tour van was rear-ended in New York State near Buffalo. The band was forced to scrap their tour with 40 Below Summer. Their van was hit by a truck, whose driver has admitted liability. John LaMacchia and Carley Coma were both flown by helicopter to a trauma center with non-critical injuries. The band was en route from a show in Albany to a show in Cleveland.
