As you may recall, in February Daggermouth went on a hiatus of sorts as singer Nick Leadlay left the group to seek treatment for anxiety and depression. Now, nearly six months later, Leadlay has issued a statement (which has been truncated) regarding what's transpired since:
"So what the hell happened? To be honest I don't even know. I have been battling with depression/anxiety for over 10 years as I'm sure some people knew just by listening to our records. For some reason I think the pressure of touring/running a band finally caught up to me on that Comeback Kid tour. My body decided it was time to slow down. I had been in and out of hospitals quite a few times in the months leading up to that tour and received basically zero help. Don't believe Michael Moore, the Canadian health care system isn't always perfect by any means. So it was only a matter of time really before this happened.
"I have since moved home [to Ottawa] and I am receiving tons of medical help as well as support from a circle of friends I've known for over 20 years. My family has also helped me stabilize my life as well as give me the gift of my first nephew.
"That being said, the last 3 months have been some of the toughest I've experienced in the past 10 years. I left San Francisco and flew directly home to Ottawa. I haven't been to Vancouver yet and all my belongings are still there. It's been a crazy ride so far. Going from playing shows everyday and meeting so many people. Then a day later being on the other side of the country with nothing is pretty fucked. I basically think about this band every single day and it's hard knowing I just can't do it right now. You can't just eat and breath Daggermouth for 3 years and then flick a switch and forget about it a day later.
"So to kill time I've been playing a lot of guitar and have written a few acoustic songs. Not sure if they will ever see the light of day, but it's fun just to be playing music again even if it is alone in my room."
Although they had hoped to take part in their scheduled tour with Comeback Kid and Crime In Stereo, Daggermouth has now officially dropped off the tour. The band explains:
"This week has been a rough one on everyone involved with Daggermouth to say the very least. Unfortunately, we have had to cancel the rest of our upcoming tour dates. Between Nick taking some time off and a whole slew of personal and financial reasons that we have to take care of, we have no other choice. Thanks to everyone for continued love and support. We will see all of you again soon once Nick has fully recovered. Please go out and show support to Crime In Stereo and Comeback Kid, those shows will rule!"
Daggermouth vocalist Nick Leadlay has temporarily left the band to seek treatment for "depression and anxiety." Here's a statement from the band:
"We're sorry to say that due to circumstances beyond our control we have had to drop off the shows between February 23rd and 28th. We will however be continuing on the Comeback Kid/ Crime In Stereo tour starting Feb 29 in Fargo, ND.
"Unfortunately, Nick will be unable to continue with us at this point. Nick has a history of battling with depression and anxiety, and on Feb 22nd life on the road finally caught up with him and his body basically gave up. After checking into the hospital it became apparent to Nick and everyone in the band that he needed to go home and seek help immediately. Until further notice Daggermouth will be touring with a replacement vocalist. To be clear, Nick isn't out of the band and we all plan for him to come back as soon as his health permits.
"Please come out to the shows in following months and show your support for Nick!"
