Through the history of popular music, many album covers have paid homage to the iconic War World II photograph, "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima." This still features a group of United States Navy men raising a U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi in Iwo Jima. The original, taken by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal in 1945, won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize and even inspired the equally iconic Marine Corps War Memorial monument located at Arlington, Virginia.
Two of the most recognizable cover album homages came out in 1986, barely months apart from each other. One was the sleeve for Savatage's third full-length, "Fight for the Rock" and the other belonged to Status Quo's "In the Army Now."
Savatage Vs. Status Quo
There are many factors that indicate that the conceptual similarities between both artworks were just coincidental. Ripping off each other or the original photo wasn't the point here. First, there was a short time frame between both albums' release dates—Savatage's in June; Satus Quo's in August. Probably, by the time "Fight for the Rock" came out, the cover for "In the Army Now" was already completed and heading into production and promotion. After all, let's remember that albums take a long time to put together from writing, production, to graphic design, marketing to release.
On top of that, the origins of both arts cannot be more different: Heavy metallers, Savatage, ordered their image (featuring the members of the band raising an American flag) apparently as a direct consequence of not including band photos in their previous albums' layouts. Their label (Atlantic) was demanding a portrait so instead of just simply posing like any other band, they opted for re-recreating the famous Iwo Jima still.
In the case of rockers, Status Quo, designer Mark Wilkinson (Judas Priest, Europe) remembers that the cover concept for his hand painted image (featuring fans and a British flag) "was suggested to me by singer/guitarist Rick Parfitt,—to reflect their 'denim army', the fans who followed them." In today’s episode of The Jasta Show, Jamey Jasta sits down with Randy Blythe from Lamb of God. They discuss the Gwar B-Q, Dave Brockie, Jello Biafra, staying sober, prison, Randy's love of literature, Randy's pcoming book, the wall of Death at Ozzfest, and more.
Randy comments on sobriety and getting sober on tour: "I was writing about drinking in my book, I address it quite a bit. It stopped working the last night I got drunk. It worked when I got to a place where everything that bothered me was shutdown. I drink because I didn’t like many things about myself and many things about the world. I didn’t want to cope with that."
Randy on what he learned from the events in the Czech Republic, and if there was a life lesson: “No there was no fucking lesson just tragedy. A dead fucking kid. Though I caught a bullet. It was bound to happen to someone. The barricade at that show was non-existent. The security is non-existent. If I were to do it again I would have stopped the show.”

Hatebreed singer and former host of MTV's Headbangers Ball Jamey Jasta has launched his official podcast, "The Jasta Show."
The weekly podcast will feature Jasta interviewing musicians, athletes, and other influential figures. During the first three episodes, Jamey Jasta interviews label mates Eddie Hermida (Suicide Silence) and Scott Ian (Anthrax) as well as Of Mice & Men's drummer Tino Arteaga.
The show touches on everything from what it's like for Hermida to fill the shoes of Mitch Lucker to the timelessness of AC/DC with Scott Ian to the next wave of superstar metal bands with Arteaga.
"The Jasta Show" podcast is available for free via this location and you can also hear the first three episodes below.
"With all the touring I have been doing globally, I have been running into so many amazing people. Now the opportunity has arisen to do this show and I am so excited," exclaims Jasta. "I am doing this because I have the desire to hear people's stories and tell stories of my own."
"The Jasta Show" is produced and distributed by the Paragon Collective Podcast Network. Alex Aldea of the Paragon Collective states, "Jamey has one of the earnest, distinct and influential voices in metal music. This show isn't just about interviews, it's about giving listeners a real backstage glance into the lives of their heroes, their stories, and hopefully inspires them to also make their dream become a reality."
