The full Barge To Hell lineup so far is as follows, with many more bands to be announced: More...
The organizers of the Barge to Hell have issued the following announcement about confirming Holy Moses as the latest act to play the cruise:
"Who better to lead them on their journey to the undead than the mighty Holy Moses celebrating their 30th anniversary? Not once, because as you know, they do everything twice. You heard right, twice! Here is how it goes: On December 3rd, 40 of the most extreme Metal Bands and 2,000 headbangers from around the world will go to the Caribbean to take over a luxury cruise ship for a 5 day and 4 night trip to the undead! For the entire trip it's like everyone has a backstage pass and you can mingle side-by-side with the Artists in this incredibly fan-friendly scenario that has no comparison. See each of the 40 bands play two live shows on two different days. That's 80 shows with unrestricted festival access to the three stages, each with it's own unique atmosphere:
"The luxurious 'A Chorus Line' theater where they spare no expense to have the benches removed on the floor. Because at a Metal show, who actually wants assigned seating in front of the stage?
"The cozy 'Spectrum' that gives you the real club feeling.
"And their jewel: The open air stage on the pool deck. The biggest festival stage to sail the Oceans.
"You can also get all your memorabilia signed at the Meet & Greet sessions. Be part of their infamous Metal Karaoke and many other special activities with the Artists. And last, but not least: Don't forget that they have bars on board that never close! What are you waiting for? You might even need a vacation from this vacation when all is said and done."

Underground journalist Ryan Bartek has just released chapter one of his forthcoming book “Fortress Europe (The Big Shiny Prison Vol. II)” as a free PDF download. "Fortress Europe: London" features interviews with members of Killing Joke, Pantheist, Hello Bastards, Armed Response Unit, Fen, Flowers of Flesh and Blood, as well as a barrage of industry insiders and renowned metal/punk journalists.
Also included in this PDF download is the prologue to “Fortress Europe,” which was released earlier this year and features face-to-face interviews with Polish death metal legion Hate, Grecian black metal kingpins Rotting Christ, and the USA’s own blackened extreme metal machine Lecherous Nocturne.
"Fortress Europe: London" details the first week of Bartek’s travels throughout the European underground during Summer 2011. “Fortress Europe (The Big Shiny Prison Vol. II)” is the follow up to 2009’s “The Big Shiny Prison” -- a book in which the author traveled the USA covering all forms of counterculture fringe through a genre-bending combination of nonfiction journalism and the classic autobiographical road novel.
Rotting Christ has issued the following announcement about canceling the band's previously scheduled appearance at the Cork Midwinter Festival:

Ahhhh, death metal. Until tonight I hadn’t been to a proper death metal show in a couple of years at least, if not longer, so when I opened the doors to Reggie’s Rock Club in Chicago’s Near South Side, the stench of decaying flesh wafted into my wanting nostrils and refreshed my soul. Spiked gauntlets and shinguards, bullet belts, corpsepaint, unending blast beats, lots and lots of huge buckles, long black coats – all the pleasantries of a death metal show were coming back to me in trigged kick drum style as I boldly strode past the merch table. The Apostles of Darkness Over The Americas Tour was in town, and headliner Rotting Christ had brought along a bag of very special guests: Melechesh, Hate, Abigail Williams and Lecherous Nocturne. Unfortunately I had a sustenance occasion that precluded my arrival in time for Lecherous Nocturne, but the folks I chatted with said their tech-death was precise and heavy. More...

From the very beginning, heavy metal has been about rebellion against established norms and restrictive social institutions. That theme has never prevented metal from being influenced by the greatest of mankind’s various systems of organized repression, however. Using a guitar and a microphone to express discontent over the actions of parents and governments inevitably led to bands expressing their disgust with the beliefs behind those actions. Whether musicians are singing about it, railing against it, or just simply partaking of it in their free time, religion has an undeniable role to play in nearly every sub-genre of heavy metal.
Plenty of bands have been built up around an anti-religious atmosphere, whether a simple general sentiment or a full-on fervor that drives the music. Despite metal being frequently identified with an anti-religious standpoint, the style has more than its fair share or religious spokesmen. Famous musicians such as Dave Mustaine of Megadeth have never been particularly quiet about their Christian faith, even if they don’t expressly promote it in any given song. Explicitly Christian metalcore acts are also rapidly gaining widespread attention, with groups like August Burns Red taking over Hot Topic and acts like I The Breather touring the U.S.
In general, it would seem the thrash metal world either doesn’t care about Mustaine’s religious affiliation or is willing to overlook it for the sake of the music. Thrash certainly has its share of anti-Christian songs, but it’s a genre that’s more concerned with social issues or an overall aggressive musical feel than anything dealing with supernatural belief systems.
As any fan of metal can easily attest, not all genres are built equal, and what appeals to one metal head is a serious turn off for another. Black metal is easily among the most infamous of all metal styles, having cut its teeth in the early ‘90s across a back drop of church burnings and sensational media stories of power struggles between Satanic leaders. Names like Emperor and Mayhem were starting to make waves and become recognized in the underground not only across Europe, but also in the U.S. and abroad. More...
