U.K. based act Sylosis has just released both versions of the cover artwork for the upcoming album “Monolith.” The artwork can be viewed below was handled this time by Dan Goldsworthy. Vocalist and guitar player Josh Middleton commented:
"We're beyond pleased with the artwork for Monolith. It needed to be something to accentuate the dark, gloomy vibe of the album without going for anything too cliche' or stereotypically metal. We listen to a lot of 70s progressive music and with the Art Nouveau style was quite popular at that time. At this point we don't want to reveal too much about the concept but one of the figures on the cover loosely represents the devil in disguise or a satyr. Some of the inspiration behind the concept came from Greek mythology.
"Working with Dan again as awesome. He's very patient, eager to please and can very quickly tap into what we're trying to put across. We always like to pay as much attention to the artwork as possible and it's never been an after thought for us. It's about creating a complete piece of work so the music and the packaging really go hand in hand."
Dan Goldsworthy also states: “Visually, the cover artwork for Monolith has taken notable inspiration from the Art Nouveau movement. Diverting from the usual flowery aesthetic of the style, Monolith has a significantly darker vein running thoughout, as fitting with the sonic nihilism of Sylosis’ music. More...
U.K. based act Sylosis has just completed work on anew record. The upcoming album is called “Monolith” and was recorded with Romesh Dodangoda in Wales at Monnow Valley Studio. Vocalist and guitar player Josh Middleton commented:
"Some people might not have expected us to come out with a new album so quickly but we already had a few songs written for this album by the summer of 2010. We've spent as much time writing this album as any of the others and I think we're all the most proud we've ever been. Monolith is the best representation of us as a band in terms of our diverse influences and stylistically it's what we've always been aiming for. A mixture of thrash, big doomy riffs and dark atmospherics and ambience.
"Overall, Monolith has a darker vibe to anything we've done in the past, both lyrically and musically. It's a concept album which is just something I like to help guide me writing the lyrics. I like the fact that I can write about personal issues but dress them up in a way that people might not know exactly how they relate to me (if at all in some instances). The idea for the concept was very loosely inspired by the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. It's quite far fetched but it's about this guy who loses his wife and tries to bring her back from underworld. This giant monolith starts to grow out of her tomb. The most prevalent theme beneath it all is sort of accepting that you might not be as nice a person as you once thought. It sounds really cheesy but everyone has a darker side to their personality in terms of being selfish, manipulative or dishonest. A lot of metal lyrics are always 'you're this, you're that, you suck' and in a lot of cases it's probably really hypocritical. Some of the lyrics on this album are about owning up to those flaws and almost reveling in it.
"Some parts of the album is us covering new ground but everything that people have come to love about our band is still present. It's not necessarily a change in direction or something we're moving more towards, it was just about making a unique vibe for this album as a whole. There's a real urgency to a lot of this material and the really natural and honest production helps mirror that. We really wanted more of a 'live session' feel. Both Romesh (Dodangoda - producer, mixer) and Jens (Bogren - mastering) have done a great job in giving this album a unique sound. Too many bands these days rely on technology and it can just suck all the life and personality out of the music."
“Monolith” will be unleashed on September 7th via Nuclear Blast Records.

Sylosis will be embarking on the "Slings and Arrows" U.K. tour with Xerath this coming April (details available in the tour poster below). The band has now posted a teaser trailer for the run of shows online, which can be viewed below.
Sylosis has issued the following announcement about upcoming U.K. tour dates:
"I’m pleased to announce we’ll be heading back out into the UK this April on a club tour around some of the secondary cities in England. We rarely get an opportunity to play the smaller towns and this seemed like the best chance we’d get in support of the digital release of ‘Slings and Arrows’. We originally released the single exclusively through Pledge, but after talking with the fans who bought it initially they seemed very keen on the idea of it being released generally…so here we are.
"We’re taking out 3 great UK bands, 2 of which we have never toured with before. This looks like the last time we’re going to be able to take out a full UK band package so we wanted to make it as diverse and interesting as possible. We decided ‘Hang the Bastard’ would be a great choice as they’ve really turned away from the conventional/bland metal music scene and that’s something we completely agree with. ‘Xerath’ - one of my favourite UK bands at the moment, very tight live and I look forward to watching them each night. Finally we’re taking out ‘Chapters’ again, they’re not only great friends with the band but they’re quickly gaining profile. This tour will be their first chance to get out of the key city shows.
"We hope to see you out there and we hope you enjoy ‘Slings and Arrows’ when its released on the 2nd Feb!" More...
Sylosis checked in from the band's current U.S. tour with As I Lay Dying, Of Mice & Men, The Ghost Inside and IWrestledabearonce, which commenced last night, to inform fans that guitarist Alex Bailey had broken his arm and is forced out of the rest of the tour. The band will proceed with a replacement guitarist for the tour.
The posting on the band's official Facebook page reads as follows:
"To update our American fans on what's been happening over the past couple of days. On Tuesday Bailey had an unfortunate accident where he sustained a broken arm which has meant he is unable to continue playing on this tour. We have however found a replacement guitarist to cover the rest of the AILD tour dates. For those fans who have seen us at both New York headline date and support for AILD you will have noticed we played as a 3 piece.
"We'd like to thank the guys in Mutiny Within - Brandon Jacobs, Andrew Jacobs and Chris Clancy, also Kyle Odell of Vanisher & Tommy Vext for being very supportive and helping us work this situation out!"

We've been chatting with bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite or most infamous mosh pit stories from metal shows. For this week's edition, Josh Middleton of Sylosis talks about the crazy antics at Sonisphere and how a festival goer decided to add insult to injury with a fallen metal fan.
There are usually so many crazy things that when you're put on the spot you can't think of any! We've had some really brutal walls of death and circle pits at the festivals we did last year and have some cool footage on our youtube. This is pretty gross but at last years Sonisphere we were playing and some of our friends in another band saw these jocks all off their faces on drugs. One of the dudes fell over and one of his friends just decided to piss all over him...pretty weird. You get all kinds of weirdos at festivals.
Sylosis is fresh off the release of sophomore album "Edge of the Earth," recently dropped a music video for the song "Empyreal," and will be headed to the Brutal Assault festival later this summer. Feel free to share your favorite mosh pit story below, and check back next Tuesday to get even more Pit Stories from metal shows.
