The trolls of Nordic folklore are believed to be dirty creatures of enormous strength and appetite. Their grotesque physique grants them a comic element, although the humor tends to be on the grim side as these nocturne beings hunger for human flesh. Unsurprisingly, this has earned them a rather bad reputation.
All things considered, Finntroll are the perfect embodiment of all aforementioned sentiments - although one might want to replace the hunger for human meat with an unquenchable thirst for booze. Catch the trolls on tour in November/December with Blackguard & Metsatoll:

And then it was Saturday! Day two of Tuska again started a bit earlier then the hungover and tired festival goers may have wished but the drowsy vibes quickly vanished (though not the rain clouds) as the day started on a much folkier note. Tuska Day Two promised another heavy day of good music, good people and the summer vibe that has Finns and Non Finn's coming from all over to partake in the festivities.
First up today was Estonian folk metallers Metsätöll! I have been excited to see these guys for years now and it was with bated breath that I entered the photo pit this morning! And here I will be a bit blasphemous and state that Lauri (Varulven) Õunapuu is quite simply a god of folk instruments. Throughout the set he seamlessly switched from bagpipes, to flutes, and numerous stringed Estonian folk instruments. Each one was expertly played and gave the performance a mysterious lovely quality. The Estonian language is quite obviously similar to Finnish, and in fact singer Markus "Rabapagan" Teeäär wows the predominantly Finnish crowd (and presumably wins their hearts) by speaking to them in Finnish. It needs to be said: his accent is much better than mine. Metsätöll is one of those folk metal bands that clearly love what they do, and though the music is fun and foly as ever, there is a lovely mysterious undertone that lends one’s mind to thinking thoughts of dark forests and legends of old. Estonian folk metallers Metsatoll have issued the following statement about the sales of their fourth album:
"Äio has sold over 13,000 copies in three months. The album, sung in Estonian, is available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands and other bigger markets, and up until today, already 7,000 copies have been sold in foreign markets. Local fans in Estonia have bought 6,000 regular or limited versions of 'Äio.' Also included in the results are the digital sales of both the full album as well as separate tracks. 'Äio' was released by the world's leading music company Universal Music's sister label, the metal-oriented Spinefarm Records."
Metsatöll's vocalist Markus Teeäär also added: "We are positively surprised at the sales figures, and also more convinced than before that Estonian audiences care about us as much as we care about them. The results from abroad, though, came as a true bombshell. It has to be said that were it not for the undaunted and hard work of Universal, we would not be seeing these figures now." More...
For the first time in the company's history, three acts signed to the Spinefarm label will embark on a series of U.K. shows in tandem, flying the flag for epic heavy metal with Finnish five-piece Kiuas, folk metal with Estonian quartet Metsatoll, and power metal with Finnish sextet Celesty. Estonian metallers Metsatöll have announced they will be performing two upcoming June shows with Oort. Drummer Marko Atso commented:
"Metsatöll and Oort will unite their forces and will be playing full-length shows in Tallinn and Rakvere on the first week of July. We decided to start the summer together. Similar to the way Oort and Metsatöll fit together, the listeners of both bands have a common understanding of the worlds affairs. Knowing the good synergy we have had at our mutual shows, I believe that those who come to listen and see us will leave the show with a very good feeling."
"Since we have been doing the same thing since the beginning of times and shared stages with the same line-up, we are always glad to participate in something good," adds Sulev Salm, the guitarist of Oort.

"On March 3, Metsatöll’s fourth studio album Äio will see the light of day. The band will present their new album on March 19th and 20th in Rock Café, Tallinn. What makes these shows special is that during the band’s longest set ever, Metsatöll, together with the National Male Choir, will present both all of the new songs as well as the songs from the Raua needmine DVD. In addition, the two-hour show will include pickings from all the previous albums. When we were recording the new album with the National Male Choir this past autumn, the guys themselves suggested that when it’s time to present the album, they will come and sing as well. More...
Estonian metallers Metsatöll have posted a music video online for their song "Vaid Vaprust (Only Bravery)," which can be viewed below. The band also issued the following statement about the song:
"Today, on January 15, Metsatöll releases their new online single and video Only Bravery – the first off their fourth album Äio, recorded in cooperation with Spinefarm Records, the Finnish subsidiary of the international record company Universal, due to be released on March 3 in Estonia and Finland. In other countries, the album will be released over the course of March. Starting from today, the limited digipak-version of Äio is available for pre-order. Only 2000 copies will be released. The three-fold digipak contains an hour-long CD with 14 brand new tracks, a 16-page booklet of lyrics, a poster and a postcard signed by the band. The album can be pre-ordered from the band’s homepage.
"The new video for Only Bravery can be downloaded from the band’s homepage. We had the idea for this video already in 2004, when for the first time we asked the legendary Estonian artist Jüri Arrak for a cover image for our album. The video makes use of the animation 'Suur Tõll,' based on an Estonian heroic folk tale, created by Tallinnfilm in 1980, with artwork by Jüri Arrak, written and directed by Rein Raamat. Recording and montage of contemporary sequences by Villem Tarvas. In addition, Metsatöll is pleased to announce that starting from now, the band’s shows outside Estonia and Finland will be arranged by the German management agency ICS Festival Service GMBH." More...
Estonian metal band, Metsatoll, has issued the following update:
"Last week, Metsatöll finished recording the demo version of their 4th album, which was begun earlier, in March. In mid-June, the entire studio was moved from Tallinn to a South-Estonian village of Hargla, where the songs received finishing touches. According to the guys themselves, leaving Tallinn behind meant a complete recovery of creativity, which can never be achieved in a big city."
"Today, the band begins recording their 4th album in the Finnvox studio in Finland. The album is recorded and mixed by perhaps the most legendary Finnish producer Mikko Karmila. Over the years, he has provided his services to such bands as Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Stone, Peer Günt, Kotiteollisuus, Amorphis, Waltari, Tarot, Timo Kotipelto, Timo Tolkki, Popeda, Sonata Arctica, etc. The album will be all about finished by early December, and will be released to the global distribution networks on 6 March, 2010."
