Just For Fun

Paradise Lost Cancels Tour Due To Brexit

This week, British Prime Minister Teresa May triggered the Article 50 clause in the European Union membership rules, triggering the departure of Great Britain from the EU. While the long term economic and social effects may not be seen for some time, one section of people already struggling are lesser known musical acts from Britain, with gothic metal band Paradise Lost, indie rockers Elbow and rapper Stormzy already having to cancel scheduled shows in the continent due to travel restrictions.

Membership of the European Union grants the right of free movement to the citizens of the included countries and as such, the ability to work in other member states. The uncertainty created by the decision of the referendum held last year in the United Kingdom has led to promoters being unable to assure artists that planned shows will go ahead and in many cases, scrapping scheduled dates altogether.

One band hit hardest and said to be most outraged by the events is Scottish "pirate metal" group Alestorm. As Scotland voted overwhelmingly to stay in the European Union, the band feel that they are being punished for something their nation didn't do and thus are being unfairly deprived of paying gigs.

More on this story as it develops.

Alestorm Issues "No Grave But The Sea" Details

Aarrrrrrrr, the one and only heavy metal pirates of Alestorm are back, and they've brought with them their fifth full-length album titled "No Grave But The Sea"! Time to put on your eye patch and let the rum flow freely for the unstoppable international party machine, as Alestorm has finally announced first and hotly anticipated details on the brand new album!

"No Grave But The Sea" will be released on May 26th via Napalm Records and now the band, fronted by Captain Christopher Bowes, unveiled the cover art as well and track listing.

Says the band: "Oh wow! It's a new Alestorm album! I hope all of you fellow humans & dogs like it; we think it's pretty gosh darn ok! It's also our first album to feature our grandiose guitarist Máté Bodor who brings his tasty & delicious solos and rifftacular riffing into the mix. This is the place in the press release where we would usually tell you this album is darker and heavier than our previous works, but that's probably not true. It is, however, full of epic songs about pirates, drinking, and pseudoscientific cryptogeography. I'm sure y'all will enjoy those things just as much as we do."

The track listing is as follows: More...

"This is the point where we would usually tell you this album is going to be darker and heavier than our previous works, but that's probably not true. It is, however, full of epic songs about pirates, drinking, and pseudoscientific cryptogeography.

"We'll have a bunch more updates for you over the coming weeks and months, including the album cover, track list, release dates, and more!"

Alestorm Gearing Up For U.S. Tour

It was recently announced that the pirates from Alestorm re-signed with Napalm Records (and of course signed in rum, rather than blood or the usual ink).

The tour kicks off October 2nd in Greensboro, NC and wraps up November 1st in Spartanburg, SC. A complete list of dates can be found below, with Nekrogoblikon and Aether Realm supporting.

Front man Christopher Bowes on the upcoming tour: "Ahoy pirates of the USA! We can't wait to get back on the road for our most extensive tour EVER of your big ol' freedom lovin' country! We've got Nekrogoblikon and Aether Realm along with us for the ride, so it's gonna be a crazy 3-way brawl between pirates, goblins, and Thomas the Tank Engine. Prepare your livers for party time!" Alestorm Signs Contract In Rum

The pirate metal band Alestorm just announced a worldwide re-signing with Napalm Records and the group inked this contract in blood... OK they decided to use rum instead. Alestorm comments:

"AHOY! After 8 years, 4 albums, 1 live DVD, an EP and a couple of singles, it is my great pleasure to announce that Alestorm will be re-signing our record contract with Napalm Records. Seven years ago I was standing naked in the middle of a field at Summer Nights Festival in Austria, screaming at Thomas Caser (CEO of Napalm Records), demanding more money.

"Now here we are today... looks like our plan worked! Being pirates, we had to sign the contract using rum as ink, nothing else would do! Unfortunately we only had white rum left (all the good stuff had already been drunk), so our signatures are invisible. We'll leave that one to the lawyers to sort out.

"Expect the 5th Alestorm album to be released on Napalm Records in 2017! We're taking our time with this one, and it's gonna be good. Maybe... Cheers!"

Napalm Records A&R Nadir Amrioui states: "We are more than proud of Alestorm and their remarkable success! 8 years ago we've received this strange demo CD of an even stranger pirate-metal-band. That was the beginning of a piratic journey all over the world. We at Napalm are so much looking forward to the next album. This is going to be awesome. It surely is!" More...

The 70,000 Ton Hangover

Can 21st-century metalheads ever be truly happy if they’re not bitching about something on the web?

The pointless arguments over bands’ music, which mostly boil down to matters of taste, are exhausting enough. And there’s a simple solution to dissatisfaction with a particular tour package: stay home and masturbate.

But complaining about festival lineups? Really?

I have some news for you, sport: the only Perfect Metal Festival Lineup, which exists only in an individual’s imagination, attracts an audience of one. Your Perfect Lineup is different from mine.

There needs to be a common denominator, a compromise. I don’t know about you, but when I’m not basking in my serene, elite metal knowledge via trve and righteous, smarmy and self-congratulatory screeds on Facebook, I actually enjoy watching a live show in the company of others. And in reaching the compromise to make that social event possible, everyone’s Perfect Lineup inevitably becomes less than perfect. Such is the transition from fantasy to reality.

In the process, like small children finally realizing that vegetables aren’t going to kill them, we learn that the reality is almost always better than the fantasy (discounting the fact that the latter doesn’t exist). MTV’s Butt-Head once mused on this very issue: “If nothing sucked, and everything was, like, cool all the time… how would you KNOW it was cool?”

At a several-day festival with dozens of bands on multiple stages, we NEED at least a handful of acts we know we can ignore. Otherwise, think of the immense pressure to be constantly on our feet, rushing back and forth, watching every equally important band with rapt attention. Even if possible, it would be simply overwhelming. We’d pass out from exhaustion and forget to enjoy ourselves. Plus, the truly special acts wouldn’t seem as special.

Last summer at Tuska Open Air in Helsinki, rather than bitch about the injustice of Bring Me The Horizon directly preceding Anthrax, I was grateful for the chance to relax and have a beer before catching a show by one of the Big Four. More...
