Pit Stories: Exposed Genitalia And On-Stage Theft

We've been catching up with metal bands and fans all over to get their best mosh pit stories. This week Prong's Tommy Victor shares the following tale of full frontal male nudity and on-stage theft:

Even though Prong was originally based out of the Lower East Side of Manhattan New York City, we've has some crazy shows out in L.A. Mainly in Hollywood at the Whiskey. For those who are unfamiliar, the lower level is all pit area, with the exception of a few booths by the lower bar. The sound there is always good. Lots of low end and high volume throughout the club, especially downstairs. There isn't a barricade, So if you are onstage you are very connected to the pit audience, literally on top of the crowd.

We did a show years back that was way sold out, that had a few memorable episodes. We were touting like crazy, partying like crazy, pretty much sleeping in our gig clothes, not washing much nor changing much. Our late great bass player Paul Raven had this weird leisure suit that he pretty much lived in. Somewhere down the line the crotch ripped out of the trousers. Raven could care less. With the lack of laundry access and hygiene in general we all pretty much bypassed underwear. So we start our set and I notice a few girls situated directly under Raven pointing upwards and giggling. I'm trying to sing and play and I'm watching these girls laughing at Raven's cock and balls hanging over their heads. We had to stop the show because I couldn't concentrate. I told Raven to move back a bit. He got mad at me.

The show continued and people were going crazy. It was a great crowd. I was leaning over the crowd, singing playing, interacting with the crowd. Suddenly I was interrupted again by a chain smacking into my guitar. I was wearing a chain wallet, I knew that, but this was all chain. I reached back into my rear pocket: no wallet! I was pick pocketed right on stage. I stopped the show and yelled "Somebody stole my wallet!!" I was freaking out, but the show had to go on. I did notice some scuffle by the door, but I continued the set rather upset. There was money, ID, credit cards, etc. in the wallet. Lost now at the Whiskey.

We were loading out and two dudes sweating, panting, approached me declaring they got my wallet while handing it over! They were upstairs, saw the dude who nabbed it. They ran out of the club and chased him down all the way to La Cienega where they jumped him and got it back. They missed the rest of the set but said it was worth it being loyal fans. Every once in awhile I run in to one of the dudes on the Strip and buy him a drink, telling everyone "This is guy who retrieved my wallet ..stolen on stage!!"

Years later Prong is still doing it. We just finished recording and mixing our new LP entitled "Carved Into Stone" on SPV Longbranch records out April 24. Maybe not the Whiskey but see you live soon!

You can get your own taste of Prong insanity live, as the band has already confirmed upcoming 2012 tour dates for February and March. Find a list of the currently announced shows here, and be sure to check back next Tuesday for more Pit Stories.

Prong Reveals New Album Title

New York act Prong has revealed that the long awaited follow up to 2009's "Power To The Damager" will be entitled "Carved Into Stone." The official press release reads:

"PRONG are putting the final touches on their Long Branch Records debut with producer Steve Evetts. Says guitarist, vocalist and PRONG founder Tommy Victor of the making of the album: 'It was hardest I've ever worked in the studio on any record I've ever been involved with.' PRONG (whose lineup includes bassist Tony Campos and drummer Alexei Rodriguez) has taken a major step forward in their constantly evolving brand of sonic schematics.

Titled Carved Into Stone, the album is quintessentially PRONG. It stretches into the band's earliest and dirtiest foundations on which the band was founded on New York's Lower East Side to the present as a staple of today's post-metal and rock scenes. 'I always believed there were many dimensions to PRONG,' says Tommy. 'Every record we've been associated with different scenes - hardcore, metal, industrial - even dance! I think this record brings all of that together and sounds very modern at the same time.' "

Prong Enters The Studio

Fresh from inking a deal with SPV/Long Branch Records, Prong has entered the studio with producer Steve Evetts. "He understands Prong in a way no other producer we've ever worked with has," says Prong guitarist, vocalist and mainstay Tommy Victor on the choice of producer. Evetts' recent work includes the likes of Dillinger Escape Plan and Suicide Silence.

"We have a lot of history and have always evolved as a band. The goal for all of us was to take all of that and make a definitive PRONG album," Victor continues.

In the meantime, Prong has been featured in Decibel magazine's Thrash Metal Hall of Fame special issue in an article detailing the making of 1990's benchmark album "Beg To Differ." Spin Magazine best summed up that era of Prong's evolution as "crafted in an alternative universe where Alain Jourgensen - not Dave Mustaine - is the incorrigible charter member of a pre-Metallica world."

Sunday Old School: Prong

CBGB's may well be known as one of the most famous clubs in the world, having been home to many bands from The Ramones to Agnostic Front, but it's staff has plenty of connections to music too, not least of which was the club's sound man Tommy Victor and doorman Mike Kirkland, who would soon form their own band, Prong. Prong was completed a few months after Victor and Kirkland (Vocals/guitar and bass respectively) began jamming together when the band recruited former Swans drummer Ted Parsons. Having essentially being born from the best place for hardcore in New York, it's no surprise that the early Prong material was very much rooted in the genre. Following their debut released, the EP "Primitive Origins" and the full length, "Force Fed," the band were able to secure a major label deal when they signed with CBS Records for their next release, "Beg To Differ." The album was a critical smash, earning rave reviews from big name publications like Rolling Stone and the praise continued even after Kirkland left the band was replaced by Flotsam And Jetsam bassist Troy Gregory, when Prong released their third full length album, "Prove You Wrong," which featured an almost bizarre cover of the punk classic "(Get A) Grip (On Yourself)" by The Stranglers.

"Prove You Wrong" also featured the band's first experimentation with electronic sounds such as sampling and programming, a feature which was to be expanded upon on the next album, "Cleansing," which was released in 1994. With a sound more grounded in industrial metal and Pantera producer Terry Date behind the mixing board, the record proved to be hit, containing such fan favourites as "Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck" (which was used by Extreme Championship Wrestling as the theme for the wrestler, Justin Credible) and "Broken Peace." The album also garnered Prong support slots on some major tours, including supporting Sepultura on their "Chaos A.D." tour, and performing with Pantera who were celebrating the release of their number one album, "Far Beyond Driven." Fear Factory Upates Tour Schedule

Candlelight Records today confirms three more in-store/meet-and-greets as part of Fear Factory's ongoing Fear Campaign American Tour 2010. All four members of the band will be available to meet with fans at Magnolia Thunderpussy in Columbus, Ohio on May 30, Digital Ferret Records in Philadelphia on June 6, and Vintage Vinyl Records in Fords, New Jersey on June 10.

Fear Factory, currently on tour supporting their latest album "Mechanize," had a brief scare earlier this week when their tour bus nearly went off road while in route to Boise, Idaho. Luckily no one was injured and the band made their show at Knitting Factory Concert House without much delay. Guitarist Dino Cazares says, “We were on our way to Boise for a day off when about 8:45am our bus driver fell asleep at the wheel. He swerved to the opposite side of the road. Most of us woke up when we felt the bus on the rumble strips and then the dirt. He woke up in time to swerve back onto our side of the road and pull over.” Continuing he notes, “thank god there was no on coming cars or 18-wheelers on the road. Everyone is fine just a little nervous.”

Six Feet Under Announces "Graveyard Classics 3"

Florida death metallers Six Feet Under are back with their 3rd installment of the band's cover series, "Graveyard Classics 3," due out on Metal Blade Records January 19th 2010. "Graveyard Classics 3" was recorded at D.O.I. Digital Audio in Tampa, FL, was mixed at Audiohammer Studios by Mark Lewis, and was produced by Chris Barnes.

Here's what Chris Barnes has to say about the band's latest chapter in the Graveyard Classics chain: "We went about picking the tracks for this installment of Graveyard Classics by really just trying to search out songs from early on in our musical upbringing, as well as tracks from when we were just fans of heavy music, before we started playing in a band. Once again choosing songs that have really stuck with us over the years, also choosing the songs that we felt would sound interesting when played in the SFU ‘death groove' style. Through the years of doing covers, many of our fans have inquired about us covering a Slayer or a Metallica song. It was really something we wanted to do for some time, those two bands being our biggest influences, as well as influencing a generation of death metal musicians. To sum it up... this is a tribute to honor the great teachers that have influenced us as well as the world of metal we all belong to. We hope our fans will enjoy. "

Track listing for "Graveyard Classics 3" will be as follows: More...
