Pacific Northwest black metal clan Wolves In The Throne Room will proudly re-release 2006's debut album "Diadem Of 12 Stars" through the band's own Artemisia Records in mid-June. This release will precede the band's first East Coast North American dates in five years.
Written almost exclusively in a windowless, black room over the long dark nights of winter 2005, "Diadem Of 12 Stars" was the first official Wolves In The Throne Room release. Re-imagining black metal as an ode to rain storms, wood smoke and the wild energies of the Pacific Northwest, WITTR created a unique melancholic atmosphere.
The "Diadem Of 12 Stars| reissue will be released June 17th on CD, 2xLP, cassette, and all digital formats. Pre-orders are live right here. See the band live on these dates:

It's been two year since the release of Wolves In The Throne Room's ambient/instrumental album "Celestite" (reviewed here).
If you've been itching for more Wolves, you are in luck, as the band is now working on an upcoming album. The group just posted the below image on Instagram along with this caption:

One week ahead of its looming release date next Tuesday, July 8th you can hear all of "Celestite," the new instrumental LP from Olympia, Washington's Wolves In The Throne Room. Listen to the tracks at NYTimes.com here.
"Celestite" is a fully synth-composed companion to the 2011-released "Celestial Lineage" LP, and is a far cry from the blackened maelstrom Wolves In The Throne Room typically delivers. Produced by Randall Dunn, the instrumental passages on "Celestite" reflect the tracks of its predecessor in a whole new light, with more than forty-five minutes of rich, otherworldly, synthesizer-constructed works which more resemble a sci-fi/horror soundtrack or meditative musical experience.

Earlier this year Wolves In The Throne Room announced the unexpected release of "Celestite," an instrumental, experimental companion record to 2011's "Celestial Lineage."
"Celestite" sees the Wolves take a deeper excursion into the crystalline synthesizer-driven domains that have long intrigued them. With the aid of producer Randall Dunn, the band unearthed a hidden soundscape that is only loosely tethered to its familiar sound.
Today WITTR has confirm the North American release date for "Celestite" as July 8th, 2014, marking the maiden release on the band's new label, Artemisia Records. The track listing is as follows:
1. Turning Ever Towards The Sun
2. Initiation at Neudeg Alm

Following the November release of the "BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini" two-track live 12" via Southern Lord, new recordings from Wolves In The Throne Room have been confirmed for a 2014 release.
Following several months of anticipation, the Cascadian black metal clan comprised of brothers Aaron and Nathan Weaver now humbly unveil their impending full-length release, "Celestite." The following press release was issued about the coming album:
"Taking a different approach than their previous LPs, 'Celestite' is a completely newly envisioned, parallel-universe version of Celestial Lineage, the beautifully blackened fourth studio full-length epic Wolves In The Throne Room released via Southern Lord in 2011. Celestite arises with a whole new, ethereal approach. There are no drums and no vocals. Rather, deep, heavy crystalline synthesizer journeying, Eno-inspired analog processing and arcane acoustic instrumentation expand upon dimensions folded within the universe of Celestial Lineage." Barring the recent release of the "BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini" live 12", Wolves in the Throne Room has been keeping a low profile since the conclusion of the world-spanning tour that supported most recent LP, "Celestial Lineage."
Now, word comes that the band, along with producer Randall Dunn, has been quietly cultivating the next chapter in its ongoing musical evolution. While little else is known of the impending recordings as of now, the brothers Weaver have confirmed that the music is currently in the final stages, being prepared for release in the first quarter of 2014.
An official communiqué on the band's impending 2014 actions will be announced very early in the New Year.
On Friday, October 21st, 2011 - one month after releasing fourth studio album "Celestial Lineage" - Wolves In The Throne Room recorded two live tracks at the BBC's Maida Vale studios.
Southern Lord now confirms a special vinyl release of these sessions confirmed to hit later this Fall. The following press release was also issued:
"It seems only fitting that Olympia's earthen black metal expanders, Wolves In The Throne Room, would add their name to the roster of acts who have recorded at the Maida Vale studios, the place where the sounds of contemporary and outstanding artists throughout the last century of popular music have been documented for the ages.
"Wolves In The Throne Room's shadow, cast long and eerie from their campfire of the arcane, eclipses the hordes of black metal clones and drones, hewing raw nuggets of inspired music from rich seams of extreme metal and astral vibrations. 'Prayer of Transformation' and 'Thuja Magus Imperium' are the two tracks recorded on that day, taken from their lauded album Celestial Lineage and spanning two sides of vinyl and twenty minutes.
"Entitled 'BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini,' this session is testament to the band's ability to inspire awe with homespun strands of metaphysical ambiance and painstakingly flexed sinews of metal, and is a must for all fans of the band as well as followers of contemporary metal."
Southern Lord will release "BBC Session 2011 Anno Domini" in North America on November 26th, 2013. The track listing is:
1. Prayer of Transformation
2. Thuja Magus Imperium
Following many months of touring throughout 2011 and into 2012 in support of fourth full-length release, "Celestial Lineage," Wolves In The Throne Room this week issue an official statement on the current state of the band as well as some insight on what the future may hold for the brothers Weaver. The group comments:
"After months of journeying we’re settled back into our life at home. Soft, warm breezes, the calls of Ravens and Eagles, the scent of Cedar and Salt Water. The Northwest Summer is a soothing balm to the stresses and strains of the road and the alchemic pressure-cooker of the recording studio. But it has been a great two years for us.
"We are so proud of Celestial Lineage, and our tours in the United States and Europe were inspiring and full of good experiences. Contrary to sensationalist rumor, we have no desire or intention to end Wolves In The Throne Room. It is very possible that future albums will be recorded. Live performances might transpire. But for now, we are reconnecting to hearth and home. More...

Wednesday was one of the coldest days we’ve had here in Helsinki this fall, and as people lined up outside to see Wolvserpent and Wolves in the Throne Room; their devotion showed as they patiently queued outside. There was an air of mystery as we filtered into the dark venue, and a feeling of relief when one was able to pass through the doors into the dark blue and amber lit room. Still people kept showing up, and fighting winters approach. Just a few minutes after Wolves in the Throne Room had started, rumors were it had sold out. More...
When Wolves In The Throne Room entered the tiny stage in the basement of Broad Street Ministry in Philadelphia on Thursday, September 15, a newfound sense of anticipation filled the suffocating air. The room became packed, like a busload of metal heads were suddenly dropped off outside the church just a few minutes prior. The smoke from the stage sucked out the oxygen, giving off a sudden wave of heat that resulted in heavy sweating and panting. The first notes of “Thuja Magus Imperium” echoed through the amps, and what transpired was an hour of gripping black metal that mingled well with the three other acts on the card. More...
Back in 2005, Alcest released a two song EP called “Le Secret,” a gem that eventually would cause a stir in the hornet nest that is the black metal community. If you didn't gather by the title, Alcest is a French band, and one masterminded by front-man Neige. With a strong pedigree in the French black metal scene, Neige was a musician who not only came forward in the 00s with multiple acts in Alcest and Amesoeurs, but also made contributions to essential French albums from the likes of Mortifera and Peste Noire. While Norway and the adjacent Scandinavian realms are often thought of as the wintery fortress of black metal, the French have long held their own with a melancholic and melodic take on the genre including the infamous Les Légions Noires whom you can read about in a previous Metal Underground Sunday Old School article.
So, what was so special about Neige’s little two song EP? Well for one it wasn’t little at all. It was nearly 30 minutes long and an infusion of 90s shoegaze, post-rock, and perfectly distilled black metal. More...

In celebration of the new album, Wolves in the Throne Room will take to the road throughout North America in several waves to kick off the touring cycle in support of "Celestial Lineage." Dates are as follows: More...
After devoting the late Winter season to writing and recording, Wolves in the Throne Room is now in the final stages of completing a fourth full-length opus.
For over six months the Weaver brothers, Aaron and Nathan, have been immersed in the painstaking writing and recording process of their newest album, and this week the process is nearly complete, at press time the album in its final mixing stages. The Wolves in the Throne Room clan has confirmed the title of this forthcoming astral black metal document as "Celestial Lineage."
Stated WITTR drummer Aaron Weaver of the writing process for the album: "An ornate constellation of imagery is what that guides the songwriting process. Cedar temples crowned with burnished bronze domes glimpsed in a remote valley. Wild Midsummer bonfires and feasting on roasted flesh. All of the sounds serve to evoke the images that exist in our minds eye. With this record we're going to explore an entirely new palette of sound. We want the instruments to sound like the liturgical music of a cedar cult."
Besides closing out a trilogy within Wolves in the Throne Room's own annals, "Celestial Lineage" also marks the final release to ever be recorded in engineering wizard Randall Dunn's Aleph Studio, the birthplace of a plethora of groundbreaking releases from Earth, Sunn O))), Boris, Cave Singers, Bjork/Omar Souleyman and countless more over the past decade, as well as where the immense tones and energy on WITTR's lauded "Two Hunters" and "Black Cascade" albums were captured.
In support of the album, Wolves in the Throne Room will commence worldwide touring this September, kicking off in the Americas, and eventually engulfing many other regions of the planet through 2012. Stay tuned for final album details and tour dates to be unearthed in the weeks ahead.
Black metal cultivators Wolves in the Throne Room are currently fully immersed in the process of harvesting their next full-length album.
The new album, though still untitled, will be the third Wolves in the Throne Room full-length for Southern Lord Recordings. Aaron and Nathan Weaver, the founding and only full-time members of the band, will collaborate once again with producer/mystic Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Boris) who produced the band's "Two Hunters" and "Black Cascade" albums.
This week Aaron Weaver supplied some insight on the creation of the new album by saying, "I got into a daily rhythm of greeting the weak winter sun in the morning, working outside in the rain until midday, then retiring to our studio to work on the music late into the night. I did this nearly every day for two months. Quite a monastic lifestyle actually. I didn't see many people. We were totally lost inside the record. Once the record was conceived from beginning to end, we met with Randall and started to slowly build the tracks at his studio in Seattle. I think that this album will be the best thing that Wolves in the Throne Room has created. We've never been able to devote this much time to writing and recording. It feels like this will be the culmination of everything we've done up to this point."
In addition to the Weaver brothers, the album will also feature vocal contributions from Jessika Kenny, who contributed to the "Two Hunters" album.
More information on the album will be brought forth in the coming weeks, as the band completes the album and prepare for a busy year of Wolves in the Throne Room actions worldwide.
