You know the phrase, "the gift that keeps on giving?" That seems to have been made for the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Everyone and their dog knows about the big stars from the movement such as Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Venom and Saxon, but there are so many great bands produced from the scene. There are the cult favourites such as Raven, Tygers Of Pan Tang and Angel Witch and then scratching even further beyond the surface, we find other great, often short lived groups such as Holocaust, Jaguar and today’s featured act, Tokyo Blade.
Tokyo Blade were formed in Salisbury, Wiltshire, itself a city well known for its musical history, particularly in the eighteenth century, in the late seventies and underwent several name changes, before settling on their now familiar moniker, which was settled on 1981. The name change proved fruitful for the band, as before long, they signed a record deal with Powerstation Records, releasing their self-titled debut album through the label in 1983. It cemented their place as one of the bands from the later stage of the NWOBHM that were well worth the listeners time, earning them plaudits from critics and head bangers alike and still being held up as one of, if not their best album to date by fans. The upcoming Rommelrock festival, which was to take place Friday and Saturday in Maasmechelen, Belgium, was cancelled. According to the promoters, the mayor of the town enforced a decision made back in May, in which he refused to issue a permit on the grounds that that the festival would cause unsafe conditions.
The announcement reads: "To our greatest regret, Rommelrock is forced to cancel the whole event. Seven years of intense labour, the spotless reputation, legal terms and liberties, in vain... Two court sessions made little difference... [The] mayor steps in to enforce the prohibition to organize Rommelrock, refuses to issue a license to permit Rommelrock 2013... such an improbable tale, as the decision of the Maasmechelen mayor made on May 13, 2013, is maintained, on so-called grounds of safety and public order... A boiling cauldron that spawned the anti-rommelrock story!
"Despite all the efforts taken and the fact we have the law and justice at our side according to the law and the constitution itself, the struggle ended in the worst possible way, forcing us to pull the plug out of this year's Rommelrock.
"We wish to express our deepest respect to all that supported us, and we apologize in the same time to all that suffered because of all this, despite all perseverance and tenacity.
We never wanted to see Rommelrock 2013, a special edition with exclusive shows and such, to end in this way."
Among the acts that were scheduled to perform: Therion, Civil War, Haggard, Morton, Tokyo Blade, Furyon, Dragonsfire, Sound Storm, Pursuing the End, Lord Volture, Iron Fate, Black Widow and Weeping Silence. More...
New Wave Of British Heavy Metal veterans Tokyo Blade have announced that they will be performing a one off show in their native United Kingdom on September 30th, which will take place at the historic Standard music venue in Walthamstow. Tickets will cost £10 each. The venue was a favourite of the band during it's early days and will be closing in December, after facing a series of economic problems.
Speaking on the venue, Tokyo Blade guitarist John Wiggins stated: "It's a great little venue, always was. We had many a wild night on that stage I can tell you, they were always a brilliant crowd to play for. Real shame it's closing but maybe we can take the roof off it for them! It'll be quite strange because we play Wacken in August which is sold out, 80,000 people and then we've got to get the whole show into the Standard. It'll be a privilege to play there again though and I bet they almost make as much noise as Wacken too!"
Tokyo Blade has issued the following announcement about postponing the band's tour rehearsals due to guitarist Andy Boulton suffering an eagle-induced injury:
"Tokyo Blade forced to postpone rehearsals for their upcoming tour as Andy Boulton a keen falconer (seen pictured here with an American Harris hawk) has badly damaged his hand after an incident with a Golden Eagle. Andy said 'the Eagle flew to me hand as usual, but when she gripped my hand her talons went straight through the gauntlet and completely through my bloody left hand! When an eagle grips it locks it's talons and there is no way of releasing it until the bird decides to let go. Not wanting to hurt her I just had to wait.'
"A quick trip to hospital and several stitches later Andy laughed and said 'it was my own stupid fault, I had the wrong gauntlet for an eagle but it won't stop me flying my birds... I love it.'
"Sadly Andy isn't ambidextrous so the band will carry on without him until he's fixed. Such a shame for a very TALON-ted band Groan!"
The band is also set to release the new album "Thousand Men Strong" on March 18th, 2011. You can check out details on hearing new samples from the album here.
