Reznor Working On Cable Series Of "Year Zero"

Blabbermouth.net reports via The Pulse of Radio that NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor is working on a cable TV series based on his 2007 concept album, "Year Zero", according to a lengthy profile of Reznor in the Sunday edition of the New York Times. The article does not go into much detail about the project, except to say that Reznor is working on it with producer Lawrence Bender, who is Quentin Tarantino's partner and also produced the Oscar-winning Al Gore documentary "An Inconvenient Truth".

"Year Zero" takes place approximately 15 years in the future, with the U.S. a religious dictatorship and the world on the brink of environmental and social collapse. Reznor has indicated that he'd be interested in a film version of the story, and has also hinted at a recorded sequel at some point.

The rest of the Times interview, which took place at Reznor's home "on the outskirts of Beverly Hills," touches on his abandonment of the major label system, his recent online album releases, and his own struggle to reinvent himself in the age of music downloading.

At one point Reznor explains, "I don't agree that (music) should be free, but it is free, and you can either accept it or you can put your head in the sand." He also says he doesn't want to participate in the way music is marketed these days, adding, "I don't really want to be on the side of a bus or in a BlackBerry ad hawking some product that sucks just so I can get my record out."

Reznor hinted in the Times article that more free music, and possibly new software applications, will be coming soon.

NINE INCH NAILS will begin a North American trek on July 25 at British Columbia's Pemberton Festival.

NIN Announces New Bassist, Posts Tour Sampler

Nine Inch Nails has announced the addition of their final member, bassist Justin Meldal-Johnson, who is known for his work with Beck. Justin replaces the previous bassist, Rich Fownes, and will be playing their summer "Lights In The Sky" tour, for which they've released a free sampler for download, containing tracks from each band on the tour.

Here's a statement from Trent Reznor on nin.com:

"I am proud to announce the final personnel lineup of nine inch nails for the foreseeable future. We've added, we've subtracted and we've wound up with unquestionably the strongest lineup I've EVER had. Joining me onstage will be Robin Finck, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Freese and Justin Meldal-Johnsen.

"We've been working on something really special for these shows and so far I couldn't be happier with the results. We'll be revealing some live performances shortly here on nin.com - in the meantime, we've posted some photos from rehearsals up on Flickr here.

"Meanwhile, I assume some of you may not be entirely familiar with the acts I've chosen to join us on various legs of this tour, so we've compiled a sampler EP for you. CLICK HERE to download this for free. If you like what you hear, be sure to show up early to the show (and please remember to support them by purchasing their music, if so inclined)."

The EP contains five high quality, DRM-free, fully-tagged MP3 files from A Place To Bury Strangers, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Crystal Castles, Deerhunter, and Nine Inch Nails. Your download will also include cover art and a pack of digital extras.

More On NIN Making "The Slip" A Free Download

Manager Jim Guerinot tells Billboard.com that the timing for the free digitial download felt right because "we just put a record out [and] we're going on-sale with tickets."

He adds that Reznor's "been in a prolific phase and we didn't want 'business' to get in the way of getting the art in the hands of the fans. We've looked at the climate and the many advantages of being able to do whatever we want without bureaucracy."

Guerinot also reports to Billboard.com that Reznor "worked again with his team of Alan Moulder and Atticus Ross out of his garage" on "The Slip" and says word of the album came late.

"[Trent] let me know there was some new music coming and the next thing I knew there was a full-length record done. . . . It's very exciting to be finishing mixing on Thursday, mastering Friday, finishing artwork on Saturday and having the world hear it [Monday morning]!"

As previously reported, you can fill out a form to download Nine Inch Nails' "The Slip" for free at theslip.nin.com.

New NIN Ticket Strategy To Put Fans Up Front

In a move meant to get fans into premium seats and bypass ticket brokers and scalpers, Nine Inch Nails has reserved tickets to each of its upcoming summer tour dates for registered users of its Web site, NIN.com.

The limited allotment of tickets will be made available through online pre-sales only to users registered under their legal names on NIN.com. Tickets acquired through these pre-sales will be marked with the purchaser's name and will have to be picked up at the appropriate venue on the date of the event. A valid government-issued ID matching the name printed on the ticket will be required for entrance.

The pre-sales will begin approximately 72 hours before general online ticket sales for each event.

Nine Inch Nails' summer tour kicks off July 25 at the Pemberton Festival in Pemberton, British Columbia, and continues through Sept. 6.

Nine Inch Nails' new fan ticketing procedure follows similar strategies from bands like Pearl Jam and Maroon 5, who have also required fans who purchase tickets from their Web sites to pick up tickets with valid I.D. at the concert only.

Metallica To Pull a Trent Reznor?

Gigwise reports the following:

Metallica are considering whether to follow in the footsteps of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails by self releasing material once their record contract expires.

The rock titans’ drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone that he would hate to go the way of Madonna and U2 by signing lucrative contracts with Live Nation. Instead, he said the band would like to keep things in their own hands.

Asked about signing a ‘360 deal’ like Madonna, Ulrich said: "We've never sold ourselves that way. No disrespect. We want to be as free a player as possible. We've been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet." Guns N' Roses "Negotiating" To Release New Album

Billboard.com reports: With a new management team in place, Guns N' Roses is "in negotiations" for the release of its decade-in-the-making album "Chinese Democracy," according to a post on the band's Web site.

The message did not elaborate on what the discussions concern, or offer an approximate release date for "Chinese Democracy," which was last on Interscope's release schedule in March 2007.

In other GNR news, guitarist Robin Finck has left the Axl Rose-led band to return to Nine Inch Nails, and will tour with the latter act this summer.

"Robin's plans caught everyone in Guns, as well as our fans, a bit off-guard," the band says. "Neither we nor management, etc., know any more in this regard and we prefer not to speculate or offer opinions at this time."

"When we begin to put tour plans together, we'll see where things are," the post continues. "Until then, Robin's touring with NIN and we're working with management on our game plans."
