A Decade Of Metal In Review

On the 31 Dec 1999, no planes came crashing out of the sky, nuclear bombs went off or microwave ovens tried to eat anyone. However, times were about to change and in the metal scene change was already well underway. Let us take a stroll through the decade in metal that was.

Many of the 90s big names like Emperor and Pantera prepared to give their last venomous scream dying off in the wake of ever diminishing interest in the metal scene that had plagued the 90s. In the year 2000 a band named “Limp Bizkit” came out with an album called "Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavoured Water" and in a storm nu-metal took over the public perception of heavy music, changing the face of metal irreparably. Although nu-metal had already been pioneered by Korn, bands like Deftones, Disturbed, Mudvayne and Linkin Park all had breakout releases in 2000. More...

Eluveitie Posts New Song Online

Swiss folk metal banmd ELUVEITIE has posted another new song off their highly anticipated new album "Everything Remains (As It Never Was)." The song, "Kingdom Come Undone," can be heard on the band's MySpace page.

Bandleader Chrigel Glanzmann comments, "Here comes the second song off our upcoming album we'd like to present you: 'Kingdom come undone!' One of our harsher tracks, where juggernautish riffs meet with onrushing folk melodies. And exactly the same furious character also lies in the lyrics. The song deals with Vercingetorix, a Gaulish freedom fighter who lived in the time of the Gaulish war. His endeavor was to unite the Gaulish clans. The song presents you a passionate speech, like he probably could have held it in front of assembled Gaulish chieftains.
In that sense: This is V... for Vercingetorix!" More...

Eluveitie Announces Artwork Contest

Swiss folk metallers Eluveitie have set up an artwork contest for their upcoming radio/club single, "Thousandfold," and ask their fans to come up with some killer art. The winning artwork will be printed on the cardboard sleeve of the new single. The winner will get the chance to meet Eluveitie on the upcoming Paganfest tour and will receive a copy of the single.

Commented mainman Chrigel Glanzmann: "'Thousandfold' is about the ambivalent character of Orgetorix, a Helvetian lord and freedom fighter who lived in times of the Gaulish war 'version' of the occurances drafted later by the roman emperor in 'De Bello Gallico' which can primarly be labeled as political propaganda. We tried to figure out what really could have occured. So give your creative vein full scope, give it a go and draw the best artwork fort his song! The best one will be the cover of the club single! We're looking forward to all your submissions! This will be really exciting!"

Finntroll Reveals New Album Details

FINNTROLL has revealed that their new album, "Nifelvind," will be release in February 2010. Previously rumored to be named "Mot Skuggornas Värld," "Nifelvind" was recorded at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland and mastered by Mika Jussila (add any big Finnish Metal band for namedropping) at Finnvox Studios. The album cover artwork was done again by the band's own guitarist Skrymer.

FINNTROLL comments on the album as follows:

“After tough and hectic weeks in the studio, due to lack of time and summer festivals, we are now really, really pleased with the results. 'Nifelvind' is the most advanced and mature FINNTROLL-album to date, with musical themes ranging from powerful death metal riffs to dark soundtracks, from pounding black metal to groovy 80's pop-music. All this is accompanied by our trademark sound, lots of never-before-heard instruments in the metal-scene, folklore and legends that make it overall the most versatile album we have created so far.”

The tracklisting for "Nifelvind" is as follows:

1. Blodmarsch (intro)
2. Solsagan
3. Den Frusna Munnen
4. Ett Norrskensdåd
5. I Trädens Sång
6. Tiden Utan Tid
7. Galgasång
8. Mot Skuggornas Värld
9. Under Bergets Rot
10. Fornfamnad
11. Dråp

Eluveitie Endorsed By Redpipes

Eluveitie has issued the following update about gaining an endorsement from Redpipes:

"Fortunately there are those days, where you come to realise, that there are still nice surprises in life! ;)
That’s what happened to me, after I firstly got in contact with the ‘redpipes’. Päde told me about them.

"Redpipes are ‘electronic bagpipes’, made in Germany. You must know, I usually hate electronic bagpipes, because they’re normally nothing but a bad joke. A fucking bad joke. So, when hearing about the ‘Redpipes’ my first first thought was: ‘What the hell? This definitely cannot be something useful!’ Normally bagpipes with an electronic tone generator really, really sound like crap (and they’re not even close to the sound of a real bagpipe. Not in light years!).

"But then Päde received one of those ineffable things at home and we tried it out. And hell, I was kinda blown away by this ridiculously looking, terribly red thing (I though it looked like a duck that grew up after a nuclear accident). I mean, come on, it souded fucking good! To be honest: After Päde plugged it to an amp, using some regular pre-amp (you know, with a little eq, compressor, ect.), I could barely tell the difference between the sound of this red ‘nuclear duck’ and a real scottish highland pipe! Astonishing! More...

Eluveitie Comments On PaganFest Tour Cancellation

Eluveitie has issued the following statement about dropping off the 2009 PaganFest tour:

"We are very sorry to announce that we will not be able to make it to this years edition of Paganfest USA after all.

"We would like to make clear that this was in no way the decision of the band and that we all were looking forward to do this tour a lot. Also we are working on a replacement tour within 2009 where we'll hopefully also be able to play a special showcase featuring songs off our upcoming acoustic release "Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion" (due April 11th). We will be back for sure 'cause you guys truly rock and we did not forget the warm welcome we've received on Paganfest I & Death By Decibels!"

Eluveitie Drops Off PaganFest 2009 Tour

The Rock The Nation promotion company has issued the following update about Eluveitie dropping off of the 2009 PagaFest tour:

"Hello to all Pagan folks out there!

"We’re almost here for the second edition of PaganFest America and are very excited for this years tour. With the anticipation continuing to mount, this will be THE tour to attend this year, we promise! On a related note, there have been some changes to the tour line up. Unfortunately, Swiss folk band ELUVEITIE will no longer be able to make it on this edition and we’ve decided that it would be wiser to wait for the band to return in the fall since they’ve already played during PaganFest America 2008’s touring cycle. On the bright side, ELUVEITIE will return on a new tour we are currently working on (yes…we’re working on something very cool for this Fall) where ELUVEITIE will play an acoustic and a full metal set and it will be worth the wait. Stay tuned for more info to come!

"With this being said, we have increased the playing times of all the bands on PaganFest America and whether you come for your favorite or for all of the bands, you will get the set time you and the bands deserve!

"On to another update: below are the final date additions to the tour. It is very difficult to get all these fine bands to commit at the right time frames to tour. This year we had to make it a short run because of the bands conflicting schedules. It wasn’t a preference of any kind, just logistics. We will try our best in the future to make this tour go everywhere!" More...
