Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 9

This week certainly could've gone better for metal. Most of us woke Monday morning to the startling news that Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus - visiting alien, hilarious aficionado of all things offensive, and lead singer of costumed shock metallers GWAR - had died in his sleep of unknown causes Sunday, March 23rd.

Naturally, co-hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) felt it only right to devote a nice, twitching, juicy slab of this week's podcast to Dave/Oderus. [00:50:45] His sudden death will likely have a massive, throbbing, aching impact on the future of metal culture, an impact as understated and yet as ever-present as his three-decade influence while alive and killing.

It's not all bummer news, though. We have some live concert adventures to share as well. Kevin caught performances by two renowned progressive metal bands: The Ocean [00:08:58] and Between The Buried And Me. [00:37:15] Mike saw thrashers Destruction [00:00:44] and experienced a unique, unexpected, trend-bucking grassroots event dubbed Annihilation Fest, held in Lynchburg, Virginia. [00:27:01]

We'd like to thank Metal Blade Records for their permission to use GWAR's "Zombies, March!" to open up this special episode, which you can check out here.

Destruction Announces 30th Anniversary Show

German thrash metal institution Destruction has announced an exclusive headliner show celebrating 30 year of total destruction.

The show will take place on November 15th, 2013 at Helvete Oberhausen. Supporting Destruction on that night will be Polish thrash outlet War-Saw and Swedish retro rockers Year of the Goat. Commented Destruction front destroyer Schmier:

"2013 was a very busy year for Destruction, we have played the biggest festivals around the globe and we headlined in the venues & clubs of this round earth. Unfortunately we couldn’t do this earlier, but now at the end of our 30th anniversary we are most happy to announce that there will be a 'Best of 30 years' show in Germany as well. After so many years and records it is still a challenge to put up a setlist.

"For our headliner shows we have a special song selection and an extended concert for all of you that will blow the fans’ minds for decades to come. I love playing festivals, but Thrash Metal & Destruction work out best in a sweaty club! It has been a while since we have been in the Ruhr Area and we are really looking forward to the gig at Helvete!”

Tickets are available online at this location.

Destruction Comments On Rock In Rio Appearance

After taking part in this year;s Rock In Rio Festival, the German thrash metal veterans in Destruction reminisce on what will definitely stick out as a highlight of their long lasting carrier.

The event started in 1985 with top acts like Queen, Iron Maiden, and many more, playing in front of 1.3 million visitors. The following events Rock In Rio II and Rock In Rio III took place with a ten years between them – in 1991 and 2001. In 2004 the festival relocated from Rio de Janeiro to Lisbon and in an additional version in Madrid. For its tenth anniversary, Rock In Rio returned to its roots. This year's edition, which was again held in the Brazilian capital, saw another brilliant line-up featuring Sepultura, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and of course Destruction.

Front force Schmier (Bass, Vocals & Hate) commented:

“The air was clearly filled with tension before our appearance at the biggest and most renowned Festival of our time. In Brazil and even all of Latin America this event brings along giant media coverage, in a way I’ve never seen before. During an entire week all performances are aired live on TV, newspapers feature specials and cover stories, soda cans have special printings on them and everybody is only talking about the festival. The pride of the whole nation is focused on Rio during these nine days! Even soccer is second string for this period and we all know how important it is to Latin American countries!

"Even for ripped-off geezers like us there are still highlights to come and Rock In Rio festival with its fan euphoria (at the airport there were fans jumping at your every other moment) was a sensational experience. Before it we’ve already spend a week in South America getting ready and we were hot! The show, were our Brazilian buddies of Krisiun supported us as guests, was just as insane as one imagines it to be with this kind of magnitude in Brazil. Several huge circlepits and tens of thousands of fists in the air celebrating the German Thrash Metal as if we had reinvented it! Total madness! When I come to look back on my carrier someday, Rock In Rio will stick out as one of its highlights. Having the people go nutts because of the event for almost a week, in a way that is only possible in Brazil: Pure joy of life and euphoria together with the ferocity of the latinos!

"Just terrific! Thank you Brazil for having us experience this, the craziest fans on earth definitely live in Latin America!!!” More...

The Big Teutonic 4 Comment On Beastival

The day the thrash metal world had been waiting for came this past Thursday at the Beastival Open Air in Geiselwind, Germany when The Big Teutonic 4 - Kreator Sodom, Destruction, and Tankdard - performed in front of thousands of metalheads.

Now, all four bands share their memories and thoughts of this memorable night. A photo taken after the shows by artist Stefan 'Heile' Heilemann of Heilemania can also be found below.

Kreator's Mille Petrozza comments: "My personal highlight were the fans! We had real bad luck with the weather and during our gig there was not just heavy rain but also a real storm so that it would rain on stage all the time. Our fans once more proved to be the toughest and best in the world and partied with us till the end. Touching and impressive at the same time. Beastival was a KILLER festival overall!"

Sodom's Tom Angelripper states: "Beastival was a special event for Sodom. The Big Teutonic 4 sharing the same stage... this event will go down in history. Aside of that everything else was just classy as well. I've barely experienced a festival as well-organized as this. And a special thank you also goes out to all the metalheads that stuck with us despite the heavy rain and made this festival a memorable and great experience for all of us! We're hoping on a repetition!" More...

Destruction Comments On Upcoming Album

Mike, Schmier, and Vaaver from German thrash act Destruction are currently in Gernhart Studios in Troisdorf with engineer Martin Buchwalter to record their new thrash hammer. The thirty year anniversary album will be mixed by Andy Classen. In addition, there have been guest visits from Mr. Tom Angelripper and Gerre from Tankard.

Mastermind Schmier commented: "For this anniversary album we did a really great job, our new drummer VAAVER opens up new possibilities of course. On this album there are no limits. So fast, brutal and yet groovy we haven't ever sounded, probably! Also the guest musicians are very special this time: with Gerre (TANKARD) and Tom Angelripper (SODOM) our old friends and companions are with us, the original 'Mad Butcher/Release from Agony' - line up is doing one song and with Ol Drake (EVILE) we got the hottest young thrash guitarist for a few solos on the album!

"Germany's best extreme metal producer Andy Classen will take care for the brutal and raw production! The album will destroy even more than DOR: fast riffs, double bass attacks and brutal groovy songs, I think this time we found the 100% right mix!

"Also the 'Mad Butcher' returns to the cover. Cool artworks are very important for us; for the new thrash thunderstorm our artist Gyula created a real hammer again! The artwork makes clear immediately where to go - FULL FORCE AHEAD - as it has to be."
