Background

Evergrey is a progressive metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was founded in 1995 and released its debut album The Dark Discovery in 1998. Evergrey's lyrics have always been of the darker sort, and the same can be said of the band's imagery. While The Dark Discovery dealt with a variety of ideas, many later albums have been concept albums, dealing with issues like self-reformation (Recreation Day), paranoia, alien abduction (In Search of Truth), child abuse, cults and religion (The Inner Circle).

Reader Poll: Vote Your Best Metal Album

Update: the staff awards are now here! Check 'em out and see who won at this location.

Our year-end awards for 2016 are nearly here as the staff just wrapped up our internal voting on the best album, performance, DVD, and metal newcomer of the year, along with a vote on our most anticipated album coming in 2017.

While awaiting our official awards ceremony later this week, we want to know: what was YOUR favorite metal album that came out this year? Cast your vote below!

In the poll we've listed out every single album that was nominated by our staff this year, but if you thought some other album should be #1 instead that's perfectly fine - just hit "Other" and type in your nominee.

Wondering why we have so many nominees? Each of our staff members nominates five albums, and we reach our winner by consensus of the album that gets the most votes, resulting in a well-rounded winner who was appreciated by a larger group of metal heads rather than just by people who prefer one sub-genre.

Since you can see who we nominated, we'd also like to know: who do you think was our ultimate winner in all the nominees? More...

Evergrey Posts "Distance" Video

Following Tom Englund's thoughts about being ashamed of being a man, Evergrey has now released a new video for "Distance."

The clip comes by way of upcoming album "The Storm Within," due out September 9th, 2016 via AFM Records. Pre-orders are online here. The band also comments:

"'Distance' is the first of a series of videos we have shot for 'The Storm Within' album. Working very closely with Patric Ullaeus and rEvolver Film Company our aim was to recreate the eerie and desolate sense we had while writing the songs for this – the 10th Evergrey album.

"One could say this is our first real attempt at inviting everyone into the cinematic world where we have been in mind and thought throughout this year while writing. We think the imagery speaks for itself. This is just the beginning. The storm is coming."

Tom Englund Ashamed Of Being A Man

Tom Englund of Evergrey has released a statement online about another reported case of rape at the Bravalla fest that had some fans cheering, and others heartily disagreeing with his assessment (for those who have been following the story, this is the third year in a row that sexual assaults have occurred there). Tom comments:

"Reading about yet another rape at the Bråvalla Festival in Sweden makes me feel ashamed of being a man.

"I feel sick, guilty and saddened to think that the possibility exists that even ONE single woman could perceive me as a threat. What is so incredibly and uniquely fucked up in a man’s head that makes him think that he could ever have the right to even get close or talk to a woman without her consent?!

"Men’s’ degrading view of women disgusts me. It disgusts me that a perception by some still exists today that men are superior. We are fucking not! On the contrary, we are very fucking far from it! Spreading insecurity and fear by our mere presence is so far from anything I want to be connected with. So much so that I feel that the world has lost its colour, its vibrancy and my hands are trembling as I type this. The thought of what women have to go through just by co-existing in everyday life in this world together with us men shames me.

"It's the attitude, the apathy and the SILENCE that has to fucking stop! And it will only have a chance to stop if us - men - fathers, husbands, brothers, boyfriends and grandpas - finally stand up for our moms, daughters, sisters, grandmas, wives, friends, girlfriends and, of course, any other women in distress. Evergrey Announces New Album

Evergrey is celebrating a 20th anniversary with new album "The Storm Within" coming on September 9th, 2016.

"We went from having no intention of making an album at all to having all the inspiration in the world on 'Hymns For The Broken,'" says Tom S. Englund. “But, honestly, we've never felt better. 'The Storm Within' is a massive album. There are no fillers on it and we've never been about that. I think the inspiration speaks for itself."

Englund considers the storyline behind the lyrics to be one of the biggest concepts Evergrey has ever tackled, based on something that everyone can relate to: having someone, losing them, and having to pick yourself up and move on. He goes so far as to call it the band's first "love" album, but it's not a subject that should be taken lightly in the Evergrey universe.

"As usual, the lyrics are based on someone or some event in my life," says Englund. "When we were making this album a lot of these relationship issues were going on around me; people losing a partner or a loved one and grieving. 'The Storm Within' is about a search for identity, trying to make yourself full when you feel half empty, and I placed that storyline in an interstellar world."

Nightwish vocalist Floor Jansen appears on seventh track "In Orbit," Englund commenting: "That was actually my wife (Carina Englund) thinking for me. Floor is a personal friend and major Evergrey fan, so it was over a glass of wine between her and my wife, who asked her if she wanted to do the song. 'In Orbit' is a powerhouse of a song and it would be easy to make it the first single, but it's not the first impression we want to make. That said, it would be stupid not to release it as a single, and if we could get Floor to do the video, that would be a home run."

Speaking of Englund's better half Carina, she reprises her ongoing role as Evergrey's secret weapon on every album, contributing vocals this time out to the song "The Paradox Of The Flame." In addition, Evergrey renewed the band's partnership with critically acclaimed video director Patric Ullaeus for "The Storm Within." Three stellar clips were shot and, in a huge promotional push, are slated to hit the internet leading up to the official album release. More...

ProgPower USA XVI, Part 2: Project Dragonland

Daybreak…..September 10th. Going out to the Artmore the previous evening was lame by comparison to the rest of the weekend. Though sold out, the Mid-Week Mayhem show after party just isn’t as big because many of the fans and musicians haven’t arrived to the area quite yet, so a 3:00am turn in time may as well have been midnight.

Waking at 7:00am, I trudged over to the Residence Inn’s quality free hot breakfast on floor 2. Today was the day….it would all hang on Dragonland – the band I’ve been lusting over since the announcement came a year ago. The Kick-Off event has always been a special occasion, but since Nathan Block of Swordlord took over, the bar has been raised dramatically…for me. That is, if you are a power metal fanboy, Nathan is your man. More...

ProgPower USA XVI, Part 1: Mid-Week Mayhem

Sunday....September 20, 2015....the alarm blared at 4:45pm. I guess I forgot to change it from the normal weekday. I sit up - still reeling from the post-ProgPower USA plague, a disease that seems to permeate from the long hours and constant human communication/contact over a four day annual ritual - or rite of passage for the newbie virgins. I reach for another cough drop and open unlock my phone to reveal this morning’s round of Facebook notifications.

Oh...a tag on a video from Dragonland’s second set at ProgPower USA...yes, I said “second.” Why a tag? Well, as it turned out, yours truly was afforded the incredible honor of joining the band on stage for “The Black Mare.” As I sit and contemplate just how that weekend transpired - all the changes, the problems Glenn and Jen Harveston and all involved had to endure in keeping a solidified lineup in the face of the dreaded USCIS - there really is a magic that happens in Atlanta. No matter how it turns out...it never ceases to raise the bar each and every year. More...

Persefone Dropped From ProgPower USA

ProgPower USA promoter Glenn Harveston announced that Andorra's Persefone is the latest band to be cancelled from the 2015 roster, in part due to visa issues. The USCIS has reared its ugly head causing the most issues since 2009 for the annual festival.

Harveston explains: "Unfortunately, this situation is not a simple as the Morgana Lefay cancellation, although the visa process is once again at the root of things. It is no secret now the USCIS center in Vermont is running 4-6 weeks behind their normal schedule assuming there is no RFE (request for evidence). We technically still have three weeks we can wait to receive these visas and then schedule the mandatory interviews. However, Persefone booked a European tour in June with the assumption they would have completed the interviews prior to kicking off their tour. They cannot complete any interviews while on tour. I requested they wait until after the tour and then complete the interviews as there was still possibly time. I was informed the day job of one of the band members prevents him from traveling to Madrid during that time frame, especially with no specific date to schedule currently. Thus, I am left with no choice but to cancel the band now.

"I know these types of explanations are frustrating to you, the fans. There is simply nothing that can be done. In the immortal words of the great American poet, Jimmy Buffett, 'Breathe in..Breathe Out..Move On.' Please know that there is no animosity between the band and myself. I truly understand and empathize with their situation. I wish the band nothing but the best and will continue to support them in the future."

Within hours of the announcement, Canada's Unleash the Archers was added to the bill. The latest roster list is as follows: More...
