In a recent interview with Noisecreep, Scorpions founding member and guitarist Rudolf Schenker discussed why the band has decided to retire after touring in support of their next studio album as well as a number of other topics. An excerpt from the interview reads as follows:
Q: First off, why the hell are you guys packing it in?
A: "We were sitting in the studio after we finished tracking Sting Of The Tail, and we realized something rather quickly. We heard these songs together, and it just captured the essence of the '80s Scorpions sound. It sounds like a combination of the best material on the Lovedrive and Crazy World albums. The songs have that feel and spirit. Then our manager had the idea to finish the band on a high note with this record. At first, we thought he was joking (laughter). But then we noticed he was completely being serious. And it turns out, he was right."
Q: So you just wanted to end the band with a high note.
A: "Yes, exactly. Look, we have been around for a long time, and we've done so many great things together. We came out of Germany when no one thought a band from there could rock hard. We've always believed in the band and had fun doing it. Sting Of Te Tail sounds like a classic Scorpions album, so we decided to leave after we get done touring it since it's such a powerful record."

German hard rock legends the Scorpions has announced that their next and final studio album, "Sting In The Tail" will hit the stores in North America through Universal Music. Given the sad news earlier today that the Scorpions would be breaking up, it seemed the most fitting time to take a look at one of the greatest bands that Germany ever produced. The Scorpions formed way back in 1965 by guitarist Rudolf Schenker as a band which had more of a beat influence until 1969 when Rudolf's brother Michael joined the band on lead guitar and they recruited lead singer Klause Meine. The band released their first album, "Lonesome Crow" in 1972 and promoted the release by touring as support to British hard rockers UFO. The band would split up briefly after this tour, due to Michael Schenker leaving to join UFO. Rudolf Schenker would join the band Dawn's Road with Uli Jon Roth afterwards and convinced Meine to join him. After a while, the band decided to resurrect the Scorpions name as it was well known in the German rock scene.
The new lineup recorded several successful albums such as "Fly To The Rainbow," "In Trance" and "Virgin Killer," the latter of which caused considerable controversy due to it's album cover. The band began to hit their critical peak when they released "Lovedrive" in 1979 which contained the excellent title track as well as "Is There Anybody There?" and "Holiday," which are considered classics of the band's catalogue. The band released two more albums, "Animal Magnetism" and "Blackout" before cementing their place as hard rock superstars with the "Love At First Sting" album, which featured "Rock You Like A Hurricane," perhaps the band's most well known song.
Since then, the Scorpions has released several more acclaimed albums and gone on to sell over 75 million records worldwide. Their song "Winds Of Change" was hailed as an anthem during the end of the Cold War and were the second hard rock band to perform in Russia under Soviet rule (the first being Uriah Heep.) They are regarded as one of the best live groups from the so-called "classic" heavy metal bands and are also considered pioneers of the heavy metal ballad style. They will be releasing their final studio album, "Sting In The Tail" later this year with a worldwide farewell tour to follow.

German hard rock legends Scorpions have announced that their forthcoming new album, "Sting In The Tail" and it's subsequent world tour, will be the band's last. A statement from the band discussing their forthcoming split reads as follows:
"Important message to our fans:
"It was always our pleasure, our purpose in life, our passion and we were fortunate enough to make music for you - whether it was live on stage or in the studio, creating new songs.
"While we were working on our album these past few months, we could literally feel how powerful and creative our work was – and how much fun we were still having, in the process. But there was also something else: We want to end the Scorpions' extraordinary career on a high note. We are extremely grateful for the fact that we still have the same passion for music we’ve always had since the beginning. This is why, especially now, we agree we have reached the end of the road. We finish our career with an album we consider to be one of the best we have ever recorded and with a tour that will start in our home country Germany and take us to five different continents over the next few years. German heavy metal legends Scorpions has announced that the name of their brand new studio album will be, "Sting In The Tail." The record is expected to be released sometime in the early Spring of next year.
In other news, the band has announced that they will be heading out on an ambitious and lengthy tour in 2010 to support the album and will kick things off with seven shows in their native Germany. After their German shows they will be heading to many other countries including Russia and the United States as well as visiting Asia, South America and places they have never performed in before.
Vocalist Klaus Meine stated: "2010 is going to be a very special year for the Scorpions, so it is an especially good feeling to be able to start this tour at home."
Firewind guitarist Gus G. checked in with the following recap of all of the band's activities during the past months and more:
"Summer of 2009 is gone and we've just returned from the last festival show of the season! I must say that we had some really great shows this summer and Ilha do Ermal in Portugal was one of the best for us!
"It felt nice to return to Portugal (first time was in 2007) and see so many of our friends and fans! We even did an encore, usually that doesn't happen in a festival situation, but this time it worked out since people kept screaming for more and wouldn't let us leave the stage!
"Looking back now most of the shows were highlights. We're still amazed by the reception we got on our first trip to Turkey @ Unirock festival, the 'dream come true' gig by supporting the Scorpions @ Greece's Creta Festival (and me jamming w/ the Scorps later that night!), the completely packed 15.000 capacity tent @ Graspop and our glorious return to Finland @ the fantastic Tuska festival!
"Then of course there were the German shows. I'm glad we did both Rock Hard & Summer Breeze festival - my personal favourite being Rock Hard (such a great vibe in Gelsenkirchen!)
"In between the festival madness, something truly unbelievable happened to me: I played a show with the Godfather of heavy metal - Ozzy Osbourne! I spent the best time of my life in L.A, rehearsing with Ozzy and his band and on August 22nd we played the Blizzcon video game convention in Anaheim.,CA as most of you probably know by now. It would be stupid to go on about how cool and great this was - I don't think these feelings & this experience can be described with just a few words!
"We are aware that this has caused lots of our fans wondering about the future of FIREWIND. No need to worry about anything boys & girls, FIREWIND is stronger than ever and we're entering the studio @ the end of September to record our 6th studio album. We still don't have a title for it, but we do have 12 brand new Metal tunes that we're VERY proud of!!!
"In time we'll keep you updated with the recording process, reveal some song titles and hopefully show you some videos from the studio.
"Stay tuned & Stay Metal!
Gus G. will perform for the secnd time with Ozzy Osbourne on Saturday, September 12th at the Sunset Strip Music Festival in Los Angeles, California.
German heavy metal legends Scorpions has announced that they have entered the studio to begin work on their next studio album. A message from vocalist Klaus Meine reads as follows:
"The last few months on the road just flew by –and as always, it was fantastic and exciting to play for you. But now we are back in our studio in Hannover with our swedish producers Mikael Nord and Martin Hansen, to work on our new album. We have a lot of new songs and are very much looking forward to the creative time ahead of us. Hopefully, when this time comes to an end, we will be able to present another awesome album that rocks and finds a place in your heart. If everything goes as planned, our new album will be released to the public Spring of 2010.
"There’s more: This October, the world wide release of our new DVD „Amazonia –Life in the Jungle!“ will be heading your way.
"PS: you can find a Scorpions special spread titled „History: Scorpions“ in the current issue of Metal Hammer.
"PPS: Can’t wait to see our fans again on October 2, 2009 in the Grugahalle in Essen, Germany.
"Until then, keep on rockin’

Tobias Sammet of Avantasia has issued the following update about Scorpions vocalist Klaus Meine recording guest vocals on an upcoming album:
"We played a couple of shows with the Scorpions here and there and they are not only the biggest and greatest Rock band ever to emerge from Germany, they are also cool Rock-n-Roll people who are aware of what's going on in the world of heavy guitars. Lately we played ....Bulgaria.... together, Edguy and the Scorpions, and I watched their full show from onstage. They kicked serious ass! Rudolf (Schenker, Scorpions) did some cool guitar work on the previous record, and now Klaus is on the forthcoming one. He has done a superb job, he opens his mouth and you immediately hear it's that cutting voice that has sung 'Rock You Like A Hurricane' and 'Blackout'! The track we did together is an anthemic mid-tempo tune, big choir chorus. And I am still speechless thinking of Klaus' performance. He is a real pro and he would still blow away 99% of all us Rock singers with a quarter of his left lung. People, get ready for a monster song!"

According to Computerweekly.com, the founder of Wikipedia has told Channel 4 News that he is considering challenging the decision to block access to part of Wikipedia in the UK.
Criticising the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) for blocking access in order to prevent UK users from viewing an image of a naked pre-pubescent girl taken in 1976, Jimmy Wales said IWF's actions have actually exposed more people to the image as it spreads throughout the web. The image in question was on the cover of an album by German rock band SCORPIONS.
The block has also meant that millions of users in the UK are now unable to edit the encyclopaedia's pages.
Commenting for the first time since most internet service providers in Britain blocked part or all of Wikipedia, Wales told Channel 4 News, "My first thoughts when I was told that the IWF had blocked the Wikipedia page was that we should take them to court.
"But because they're not a statutory body, I've been told we can't necessarily challenge their decision." More...
Legendary heavy metal bands the Scorpions, has had their Wikipedia page censored in the United Kingdom, due to allegations of child pornography.
Guardian.co.uk is reporting:
The Internet Watch Foundation has propelled the UK into the forefront of the internet censorship debate by blacklisting an image on Wikipedia as "a potentially illegal indecent image of a child under the age of 18." You may already have this one. It's a 1976 SCORPIONS album cover….
Wikinews reports that British ISPs restrict access to Wikipedia amid child pornography allegations. The story says:
Wikinews has learned that at least six of the United Kingdom's main Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have implemented monitoring and filtering mechanisms that are causing major problems for UK contributors on websites operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, amongst up to 1200 other websites. The filters appear to be applied because Wikimedia sites are hosting a Scorpions album cover which some call child pornography. The Scorpions are a German rock band who have used several controversial album covers and are perhaps best known for their song, "Rock You Like a Hurricane". More...
Legendary photographer Ross Halfin has posted the following message at his website:
"It's been a Metallica weekend - kind of. Shot Metallica rehearsing new songs on the 02 stage for an hour. Then did a studio set up and got all the band to do photos. Of course Lars says while standing posing 'This isn't on the schedule.' Me: 'So?' He does what he's told. I got a lot done - I know I say this but I did, particularly of James. I gave him the new cover of Burrn! which I like (shot in LA) and Kirk was over the moon with Classic Rock's photos of him and THE SCORPIONS. He's talking to the band about doing a co-headline tour. Did some more of them warming up then shot the show. Hated the set list, found it boring - no 'Four Horsemen', 'Creeping Death', 'Damage Inc.' You get the new songs (fair enough with a new CD) but the rest of it I found a yawnfest - 'Wolf To Man', 'One' (never liked the song), 'Frantic', plus playing in the round there were so many monitors and veri-lights along the front of the stage you were looking up their noses. Walked onstage at the end and got them kicking huge black Metallica balls. I didn't get into it as I hadn't seen the show with new lights etc."
