A Legend In Manhattan "Accepts" No Substitutes

It’s was the fall of 1985 when Accept was introduced to me, only the second metal band to Twisted Sister that I was exposed to. “Metal Heart” was an album that captured me like no other, one that became so intertwined into what I declared “true metal” that I knew every single nuance of every single song. “Bound to Fail” became a bit of a theme song and “Teach Us to Survive” was one of the most daring songs of its time. Six months later a label company “rushed” “Russian Roulette” hit the streets and in as much as I read how disappointed the band was with it at the time of its release, it remains one of my favorite albums of all time, an underplayed, near forgotten masterpiece. I can expound upon what Accept has done to improve my life with such brilliant music, but suffice to say they have been in it for 31 of my 46 years and are ingrained in my very own “metal heart.” More...

Udo Dirkschneider Bids Farewell To Accept

The Islington Academy has hosted many names from the world of metal over the years. From upstarts to legends, many a hard rocker has passed through it's doors. Tonight however, the venue was to host a show like never before, as the iconic heavy metal singer Udo Dirkschneider and his band U.D.O. (using the moniker, Dirkschneider, so as not to confuse concert goers expecting to hear their own songs,) performed a set consisting only of Accept songs, the vast catalogue and classic tunes the singer was bidding farewell to after so many years, perhaps never to be sung by his unmistakable voice again. He was in good company too, bringing along Canadian metal stalwarts Anvil for the ride, as well as British heavy metal outfit, I.C.O.N.

I.C.O.N. opened the show and set the tone for the entire night. This quartet from Burnley play nothing short of vintage of heavy metal with the skill to do it justice where so many have failed, making them the perfect openers for such a tour. With a good stage presence and solid musicianship, the group surely won over those who attended the show early and treated them to some real belters such as "Devil's Blacklist" and "Deconverted" during a set which felt all too short for those of us in the audience. Their album, "The Blacklist" is out now. More...

Sunday Old School: U.D.O.

It seems a common trait in metal music is that if a popular frontman leaves a well known group, he (or indeed she,) will form a new band named after themselves, rather than simply using their full name. Dio is one of the best known examples of this, and King Diamond of Mercyful Fate is another, with the trend continuing to this day with Immortal frontman Abbath Doom Occulta, forming his own band, Abbath. Another of the more popular acts to be founded in such a way, was done so in "the city of blades," Solingen, Germany, by the German singer, Udo Dirkschneider, who christened his new group, U.D.O.

Dirkschneider had made his name in the eighties as the gruff frontman for Accept, a pioneer of the speed metal sound and one of Germany’s most popular heavy metal groups, but in 1987, he expressed his desire to go solo, which he did with the blessing of his bandmates. He put together a lineup which included Warlock bass player Frank Rittel, as well as guitarists Mathias Dieth of Sinner and Peter Szigeti, along with drummer Thomas Franke and the quintet recorded their debut album, "Animal House," which was actually written for Dirkschneider by Accept as a goodbye present. It was very well received by fans, if not all critics, and the band took to the road to promote the album, performing with the likes of Lita Ford and Guns N Roses, who were riding high on the success of, "Appetite for Destruction." U.D.O. To Stop Playing Accept Songs Live

At a press conference in the VIP tent of Wacken Open Air, metal singer Udo Dirkschneider dropped some bombshell news: the 62 year old cult musician announced his definitive farewell to the Accept song library.

On a special tour beginning in 2016, he will perform songs by Accept one last time before he retires them for good.

During this Accept farewell tour, he will only showcase songs from the Udo era of the band.
In the early 80s, the Solingen-raised singer skyrocketed to worldwide acclaim with the band Accept and with his unmistakable voice on hits such as "Balls To The Wall," "Metal Heart," and "Princess Of The Dawn."

"I still love singing these songs live,“ Dirkschneider says. "The songs are still an important part of my catalogue and still suit my voice very well. But at some point in your life, it's just time to close the chapter. There has been so much talk and speculation about Accept, so I just want to give my last definitive musical statement about it and give my fans a chance to see me perform a complete concert of these songs one last time on stage."

After this tour, Udo will only play songs from his extensive library of U.D.O. material. "There is enough high quality material to fill a two hour set with no problem," says Dirkschneider. "U.D.O. has been the band where I belong for 18 years and I want to pay tribute to them from now on."

The musician will not perform this farewell tour under the name U.D.O. but simply as Dirkschneider. More...

U.D.O. Brings On New Keyboardist

Following the recruitment of his son Sven Dirkschneider in the drum position, U.D.O. has now issued the following update about bringing on a new keyboardist for upcoming live shows:

"U.D.O. is very proud to present our new tour keyboarder Harrison Young. The band is currently rehearsing for the tour. Harrison already became a fixed part of the U.D.O. family and everybody is highly motivated to kick ass on tour. This is the best U.D.O. ever with a great NEW setlist!!!!

"Harrison Young is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, and audio producer from just outside of New York City, currently living in the Netherlands. In addition to touring and recording with his own two bands, Earth Minor and The Harrison Young Quartet, he has also appeared on numerous albums including metal queen Doro Pesch’s latest release, 'Raise Your Fist' and NYC hip hop Legend Talib Kweli’s album Gutter Rainbows, for which Harrison provided the iconic piano riff on the #1 iTunes single, ‘Cold Rain.’

"For the past several years, Harrison has been touring the world with Doro as her keyboardist, appearing at festivals like Wacken, Graspop, and Sweden Rock, in addition to countless headline shows everywhere from Los Angeles to Moscow. In 2013, he sang the official anthem of the inaugural Full Metal Cruise alongside Doro in front of hundreds of thousands of people at Hamburg Germany’s 824th Harbor Celebration.

"He also recently released a new album with his long time rock band, Earth Minor entitled 'Across The Atlantic In Record Time,’ which is now available worldwide at his website. Harrison is thrilled to join the U.D.O. team as of this upcoming European tour and looks forward to rocking with you in your city." More...

Sven Dirkschneider Joins His Father's Band

After splitting with former drummer Francesco Jovino and numerous auditions with possible new band members, the decision has been made – the new drummer and band member of U.D.O. will be Sven Dirkschneider.

'His drumming has simply convinced us most," the band says. "His style of playing drums is fresh and really grooves heavily. It simply is exactly what we need for U.D.O. We also know that Sven fits perfectly into the band family. He has been working as a drum tech for us for more than four years and we know from several world tours that everyone likes him and gets along with him perfectly.“

Sven Dirkschneider is 21 years old and is now the youngest member of U.D.O. From the beginning Sven was in touch with his father's job and ran around backstage at his shows, and he felt at a very early stage that this could be his world as well. His debut show for U.D.O. will be on March 6th in Wuerzburg/Germany.

"It is a very special feeling to be a part of my father’s band," he says. "I somehow have always been around with the band since I can remember. But I have never dreamed of being a real band member one day." More...
