Dillinger Escape Plan has posted an update to their MySpace page revealing that they will be playing at Soundwave in 2009—presumably as a replacement for Scars On Broadway, who controversially canceled all their future live commitments, including Soundwave, three weeks ago.
"We have a lot of stuff in the works," the message on The Dillinger Escape Plan's MySpace blog said. "But we'll throw out a little treat right now for our fans in Australia. We're playing Soundwave in 2009!!! We haven't been added to the official contest webpage yet because the webmasters there are slacking, but we're definitely playing. Stay tuned for details."
Soundwave's second announcement is scheduled for Thursday, November 6th, and is expected to reveal the Australian bands to appear at the festival. Earlybird tickets for Adelaide and Perth went on sale this morning at 9:00am, completing the round of pre-sale tickets for the festival's five cities.
Here are the tour dates:
Saturday, February 21st - Brisbane
Sunday, February 22nd - Sydney
Friday, February 27th - Melbourne
Saturday, February 28th - Adelaide
Monday, March 2nd - Perth
ResurrectionJunkie, a moderator for the official Scars On Broadway forum, released this statement on Daron Malakian’s surprising cancellation of the band’s upcoming tour:
"Some other facts from the 'inside' that I was given permission to disclose, in no particular order:
1. Daron is physically okay. There were some rumors about him having throat cancer and some other things like that. ALL FALSE.
2. Opinions and rumors about Daron's drug use, going to rehab, and all related things are wholly UNTRUE. Daron did not cancel the tour on some whim or out of some selfish need to fuck around at Disneyland or because he can't stop smoking weed or any other such nonsense.
3. There IS a personal issue that Daron is dealing with right now that is at the root of the tour cancellation. His message to the fans already summed this up in a purposefully vague kind of way. This issue was not disclosed to me and will not be disclosed to anyone outside the band because it is NONE OF OUR BUSINESS."
There are still no plans to reschedule the tour.
Scars on Broadway mainman Daron Malakian has issued a response to the criticism regarding his recent tour cancellation:
"I've read many of your postings and I owe it to all of you to respond:
"I understand all of your frustration and anger, and I never meant to let any of you down. Your support for Scars has been so important to me and the band. I would never cancel a tour unless I had real reasons and personal things that require my undivided attention. The music of Scars will live on, but now is a time when aspects of my life need to be tended to. I hope all of you can understand."
Scars On Broadway has announced that they will be cancelling all tour dates aswell as their appearance on the Jimmy Kemmel show with no plans to reschedule. Apparantly, the reason given is that singer/guitarist Daron Malakian doesn't feel that his heart is into touring at the present time.
Scars On Broadway sold just under 24,000 copies of their debut album this year and features System Of A Down members Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan.
The official bill for the 2009 Soundwave festival in Australia has been recently released. Scars On Broadway has posted stills from their recent "World Long Gone" video shoot this past week in Agua Dulce, CA, courtesy of a friend of the band Greg Watermann.
The video is said to follow soon.
Timesonline writer Robert Collins recently sat down with Scars on Broadway members Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan to discuss System of a Down's hiatus and whether the band will reunite in the near future.
"We took a break before we broke up," admits Dolmayan. "After 12 years, it's not so much that you get tired of the people you're with, it's more that you don’t have an identity. I think System will co-exist with Scars. They will probably leapfrog each other."
"I don't know Jack White," adds Malakian, the guitarist and songwriter, "but I like what he does in the White Stripes. I've only heard a couple of songs from the Raconteurs, but I liked that, too. As artists, we don't want our music to be a brand like Coca-Cola. You want to scratch those creative itches: things that you couldn’t do in certain situations. There are things in Scars that aren't in System. I love metal, but I was taking a new direction. I wanted to express the side of me that likes Roxy Music, the Beatles and the Grateful Dead."
Now that having a second band almost makes sense, musicians are leaping on the opportunity to explore new avenues with new, and old, friends. But it’s an aside from Malakian that perhaps sheds the most light on this relatively new phenomenon. With record companies under more pressure than ever before, if profitable musicians want to release music under different names, labels are in no position to dissuade them.
"Columbia wanted the record, but they let us go out and shop it anyway," Malakian explains. "And once we shopped it, we said, 'Man, we don't want to be on Columbia any more.' Columbia don’t want to burn that bridge for when System returns, so they let us do what we want."
Rumors are circulating that the band will be reuniting to represent Armenia in next year's Eurovision song contest to be hosted in Russia, but this rumor has not yet been officially confirmed by the band.

Blabbermouth.net reports: SCARS ON BROADWAY — the new band led by SYSTEM OF A DOWN guitarist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan — sold just under 24,000 copies of its self-titled debut album in the United States during its first week of release to debut at position No. 17 on The Billboard 200 chart. This number represents roughly 36 percent of the 66,000 opening tally registered by "Elect the Dead", the debut solo effort from SYSTEM lead singer Serj Tankian, which came out last fall through the Warner Music Group.
SCARS ON BROADWAY will launch its first headlining tour of North America in October. Exact dates and venues have yet to be determined.
Both SCARS ON BROADWAY and SYSTEM lead singer Serj Tankian declined to release their latest projects through Columbia Records, where SYSTEM has been signed since 1998.
