Musicians Comment On Michelle Meldrum's Legacy

Meldrum is pleased to announce that the band's third album "Lifer" is officially out now via Reversed Records. "Lifer" was released as a proud tribute to the late Meldrum founding guitarist Michelle Meldrum. "Lifer" is available now on iTunes and CD Baby.

Michelle tirelessly spent her career touring the world and sharing the stage with the likes of Motorhead, Black Label Society, Sepultura, Danzig, and Nashville Pussy to name a few. During that time Michelle left a everlasting impact on the guitar world. To mark the release some of Michelle's closest friends Gene Hoglan (Testament, Death, Dark Angel, Dethklok) John Deservio (BLS, Cycle of Pain), James Lomenzo (BLS, Megadeth, White Lion), and Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys, Watch Tower, Broken Teeth) have commented on their fallen friend.

Gene Hoglan: "It was and still is an honor to know Michelle and it is indeed with great pride that we release 'Lifer.' I know she's watching over us and smiling along with us at this wonderful day. I know I'm a better person for knowing Michelle, and I know she feels all of our love for her, as we feel hers for us. Through tragedy may we find joy, and through 'Lifer' and all her other works, may Michelle find immortality. She'll always be immortal to us. Remember, this is meant to be cranked up." More...

Flynn will undergo surgery tomorrow, Wednesday, November 14 in Minneapolis before returning home to California to recover, rest and recuperate. Machine Head will rejoin the tour in Portland, OR.

Machine Head extends its regrets to fans, the other bands, and the other crews for having to leave the tour prematurely.

Gene Hoglan Talks Dethklok Recording Sessions

Drummagazine.com has conducted a new interview with legendary metal drummer Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan (Testament, Death, Dethklok, Meldrum, Dark Angel). The interview focuses around the drum tracking and writing process Hoglan used on the upcoming Dethklok release "Dethalbum III." Excerpts from the interview follow, or you can read the full thing at this location.

Drum: What kind of patch-ups are you doing for Dethalbum 3?

Seeing that I track the songs the day that I learn them, usually I have some tiny transitional fills to do, or this time Brendan wanted me to try some different beats to match his new riffs. We’re writing songs on the fly. So as the songs progress we’ll play something different to match the new riffs. I rarely get to do that sort of thing but this time I did, so a few tiny little spots were fixed.

Drum: How do you learn a song and record it the same day? That’s unorthodox.

It is unorthodox. But I’ve had so many projects that are like that where the band or artist hands you the song and you play it. You need a large stockpile of fills that work and ones that you can cull from your mental brain trust of fills. Like, “Okay, I know in this style of music I have a bunch of fills that could work well.” Or the artist might say, “I am not feeling that fill,” so you access a different memory bank of fills. So then you try those. Option anxiety happens a lot when I work like this, usually it’s the people I’m working with saying, “Let’s try this or throw that up against the wall.” Sometimes it bogs down the session and it can make you real tired at the end of a long day.

Drum: So you’re tracking Dethalbum 3 and recording soundtrack material for Metalocalypse at the same time?

We’re doing the album version of the songs that appear on the new season, and a few songs that haven’t been aired yet. We’re also recording songs from the past season. We came in to do Dethalbum 3, which made me think we would be tracking songs from season three, but then Brendan said, “Who knows when we’ll get in the studio again, so let’s track songs from season four too.” Great.

Without the fans, there is no Lamb of God."

Gibson Announces Dethklok Signature Guitar

Adult Swim has teamed up with Gibson Guitar to create a Deathklok "Thunderhorse" Explorer, the band’s new signature guitar. Adult Swim issued the following statement about the new guitar:

"That’s right: a real guitar. Gibson craftsmen collaborated with series co-creator – not to mention Berklee College of Music grad and Billboard chart-topping musician – Brendon Small to come up with the design of the limited-edition product that was unveiled to industry insiders at last week’s NAMM 2011 show in Anaheim, Calif.

"Available beginning next month at Gibson Guitar dealers throughout the U.S., the Dethklok 'Thunderhorse' Explorer is a top-flight metal guitar patterned after the animated band’s lead guitarist, Skwisgaar Skwigelf’s weapon of choice. It features a gloss Silverburst finish with cream top and fingerboard binding. It is equipped with Burstbucker 1 and Burstbucker 2 pickups and is decked out with chrome hardware. The limited-edition guitar will be available for a suggested retail price of $2699."

Show creator Brendon Small also commented: "Though our show is a crazy comedy, we managed to target a very large guitar playing audience. I think that’s because despite all the joking I do on the show, I take the guitar playing and the way the guitar is presented on the show quite seriously! It may be the only thing I take seriously! Well, I take chocolate seriously too. Anyway, it's great to see the fans responding to the guitar and the music through buying CD and guitar tab books! But I have to say I never knew I'd be lucky enough to design a Gibson Explorer!! This Silverburst is amazing. It sounds beautiful and I've been putting it through the tests on my solo record and it sounds absolutely beautiful! I am officially the luckiest man alive!"
