Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.
Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...
After returning from a tour of Latin America, Dutch metal band Asphyx continues working on new material to finally follow latest studio album release “Deathhammer” from 2012. Check out impressions from the tour in the video clip below, while the band had this to say:
“Asphyx recently ended a small tour throughout Latin America, which was the first tour of the band for over 20 years. We performed in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Sao Paolo, Curitiba, Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires, Lima, Mexico City, San Jose and Medellin. Thanks to all local promoters and venues, D-19 and especially our dedicated and insane fans it became a fantastic experience we'll never forget and a great success for Asphyx. So a massive 'cheerz a lot!' to everybody in making this possible and all the hordes that came to support the band.
"So many stories to tell, so many great times and shows we had. Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Costa Rica and Colombia; all you crazy metal heads can be proud of your countries and continent where death metal is so very much alive. It was indeed death... the brutal way! And let's hope Asphyx can return in the near future!
"In January 2016, Asphyx will hit the rehearsal room to finish composing and arranging the final pieces for the follow up of 'Deathhammer.' And then hit the studio for the primary recordings, which will also feature Stefan 'Tormentor' Hueskens on drums for the very first time. So we start the new year off promising and 2016 will definitely see another brutal Asphyx album in our own particular style.” More...

"Asphyx is proud and very pleased to announce their first tour on the South American continent. Originally released in 1991 ("The Rack") and 1992 ("Last One On Earth"), the first two full-length albums by Dutch death/doom commando Asphyx are finally returning back on vinyl. Both are set for worldwide release on March 16th, 2015 via Century Media Records. Asphyx vocalist Martin van Drunen has checked in with the following comment about these re-releases:
"Over the years Century Media has put out a lot of superb vinyl re-releases. Especially for that LP freak of today for whom it's difficult, if not impossible, to find the originals. Even I couldn't obtain everything as a young metalhead back in the days and therefore I am happy that labels do decide to re-release some sonic classics.
"And so is the case with these first two Asphyx albums. After the mauling 'Death...The Brutal Way' and crushing 'Deathhammer,' old and new Asphyx fans are now given the opportunity to add 'The Rack' and 'Last One On Earth' to their vinyl collection. Two outstanding re-releases by dedicated metalheads for loyal metalheads. Kept as close to the originals as possible, not only when it comes to the artwork of ancient master Axel Hermann, but also sound-wise these take you back to the early days of true death metal...and of Century Media as well!
"The band is proud of these milestones, as lots of the tracks are still and always will be played live with the intensity and volume Asphyx is so well-known for. So get your hands on these albums, and give 'em a deafening spin on your record player! Vinyl...The Brutal Way!"
Both vinyl editions orientate on the original pressings and feature the original covers. Both albums are based upon the original early 90's recordings and were specially mastered for vinyl by Patrick W. Engel / Temple Of Disharmony (Massacra, Dissection, Grave) in December 2014. You can also see Asphyx live on these dates: More...

Hells Headbangers is proud to release the first issue of the Organ fanzine. Available in an 120-page, perfect-bound book, Organ was hand-drawn and written in an old-school cut 'n' paste style by celebrated underground artist Putrid, who's done artwork for Autopsy, Impetigo, Hooded Menace, and Acid Witch among many others. The following press release was issued about the magazine:
"Organ is the physical-waste deposit of two Midwest dipshits who suffer from obsessive visions of horror, visions of endless torrents of blood and gore, visions of cinematic barbarism transfixed within a nauseating vortex of undead soldiers of Satan waging war with guitars and venomous forked tongues, never-fuckin'-ending visions that transform their already unstable reality into an all-out blood orgy of neck-snapping, fist-pumping, homicidal lunacy! That, and super-cool comics and buxom babes smothered in a lot of blood... Organ is cry for help - a plea, if you will, to join their Cult Of Gore. They are possessed by death and obsessed with gore, and they want you to come fuckin' die with 'em.
"This blood tome is saturated in interviews with metal purveyors Impetigo, Asphyx, Undergang, Nocturnal, Grave Upheaval, Cianide, Morbus Chron, and Denial, a chat with Mike Minnet of Bad Taste, and Mike Howlett, the author of The Weird World Of Eerie Publications book: literally, a fuck-ton of horror/exploitation write-ups including a Coffin Joe and Tim Ritter spotlight, metalhead artist profiles, insane horror comics, nerd anecdotes of the lurking past, and then throw in a gaggle of numskulls that love Jap hardcore, Conan The Barbarian rip-offs, and throwin' loads to Amber Lynn for, like, over two decades!! And just when you think the sleaze maelstrom has ceased, you are dead-fuckin'-wrong! There's even more weird diseases to contract that you've never even heard of, WOW!"

The pit is where the action is at, but it can also be a dangerous place with all the banging heads and flailing body parts.
Every week we check in with musicians from around the globe to get their most memorable Pit Stories. Today Martin Van Drunen (Hail of Bullets, Grand Supreme Blood Court) shares this story of a short stage resulting in fan and band coming just a bit too close together at an Asphyx show:
In April 2009, I played with Asphyx in Barcelona in a place called Espasi Jove, together with Graveyard and Looking For An Answer. Two great but unfortunately not very well known bands from Spain. It was one of these shows organized by fans, not professional promoters, so it was a bit pleasantly chaotic, as these shows usually are. The place itself looked like a school building, and the stage was about one-foot high, so it wasn’t really something you could call a stage. But we don't care about minor things like that-- the place was packed and the atmosphere was just great. Both Graveyard and Looking For An Answer did fat performances, which we watched from the crowd, having a good time and drinking, as always. A lot of beers with the metalheads.
So then it was our turn. Normally when we headline smaller shows, we can play up to two hours sometimes, depends if there's a curfew. So this would be a long one as well. I think it was somewhere halfway into the set (we still had to do songs like “The Rack” and “Last One” along with some other Asphyx-oldies) when there was a big guy standing at the front of the stage banging his head off. But he was really tall, perhaps like me, maybe even bigger. So at one point, he was banging his head, but he was standing slightly bent over. And we always bang our heads off too during our set, so when I put my head down, all of a sudden he threw his head back, but also stood up straight. So he hit my forehead fuckin’ hard with the back of his thick Spanish skull. And for an instant, I was blind, couldn't see shit. Then I felt the spot where he hit me, and there was this egg growing rapidly.
The band guys asked if I was ok of course. I asked Xavi from Graveyard (whom I saw standing in the crowd) to please get me some ice, and he started running to the bar and came back with a plastic cup with a big piece of ice in it. Ah, I remember that relief when I put that against my aching and palpitating forehead. But, as we say in the band, we always man ourselves (it's a Dutch expression, not sure how to translate that), and it was our first show in Spain ever. We didn't wanna disappoint the Spanish fans. So I continued the show, with the ice against my head, taking it slightly more easy than normal haha. And the crowd really appreciated it and were grateful that we kept playing on.
Later on, I met the guy and he apologized. I told him, “Hey, not your fault, you had a good time banging to us and you didn't do it on purpose, those things can always happen during a death metal show.”
I think I had a brain concussion, as I still had a satanic headache for days after that performance. But I recovered soon after that, and now it's just a nice anecdote or memory. And let's be honest, boys and girls: death metal just ain't for sissies…

Asphyx has issued the following announcement about canceling the band's previously scheduled Rome show this coming Saturday:
"For our always loyal die hard Italian Asphyx fans,
"We deeply regret that we cannot come to Roma this Saturday. In 25 years of Asphyx we have never let our fans down when it comes to a show and for us this too is a very sad and dark moment and our iron hearts are bleeding.
"To explain exactly why is too much to tell, but to keep a long story short is that the promoter did not keep promises made to us and because of this we no longer can trust this person or are willing to co-operate with him any longer. We did give him a chance until today but still there were many things unclear and promises broken. Next to our passion for the death metal we play we also are a professional band and under these circumstances we are not able to give you, our fans, the show they deserve to see and experience for their hard earned money.
