Devian Calls It Quits

Swedish metal act Devian has issued the following announcement about deciding to call it quits:

"It's time to break the silence… with eternal silence. We have decided to put Devian to rest. After the tour with Unleashed in 2009 we started to focus on the third Devian opus. After a few months of hard work on the album Legion announced that he'd leave the band. About that time we also parted ways with the label that released our two first albums, Century Media. Some months later we started to negotiate with various labels but never did found anything that would meet even our budget for recording.

"During this period of time we started to feel that we had lost the glow we once had for the band and the music. We recorded a demo with a new direction to more ordinary metal with lots of clean vocals, you can still hear it on myspace. This gave a new spark to the band, but it was only temporary.

"At this time Joinus decided to leave the band. He was 'tired' of the music Devian was playing. After all, 20 years playing death/thrash metal in various acts is a long time. And the step to the direction he (and some other members) was trying to reach was a step to far and would only disappoint all of you who listened to what Devian once started out as, a Death Metal act. And after Joinus left Emil, Tomas and Carl decided to put Devian to sleep, forever… More...

Devian Announces New Album Title

After their much-lauded debut album “Ninewinged Serpent” in 2007 and a comprehensive European tour with Polish death metal overlords Vader, Sweden’s blackened death/thrash commando DEVIAN, who feature former Marduk members Legion (vocals) and Emil Dragutinovic (drums) in their ranks, return with a second album, "God To The Illfated." "God To The Illfated" will be released in Europe on the following dates:

DENMARK / NORWAY: December 15, 2008.
SPAIN / PORTUGAL: December 16, 2008.
SWEDEN / FINLAND: December 17, 2008.
FRANCE: January 05, 2009.
ITALY: January 16, 2009.
UK / GREECE / REST OF EUROPE: January 19, 2009.

Recorded once again at Art Decay Studio with Rickard Kottelin, DEVIAN this time around decided to hook up with Hypocrisy / Pain mastermind Peter Tägtgren for further production duties and the intense mixdown of the album at The Abyss Studio (Immortal, Marduk, Dimmu Borgir, etc.), while mastering was once again taken care of by Peter In De Betou / Tailor Maid Production (Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, etc.).

Frontman Legion comments on the creation of DEVIAN’s sophomore album:

"'God To The Illfated' is the result of DEVIAN fusing together as its own powerhouse. Having the luxury of making music together with one's best friends made the new songs step up to a whole different league throughout the writing sessions: we all bled everything into the album, everything that we knew was DEVIAN and explored as much new ground as we could. The extensive touring we did last spring showed us what really works for us....jacked up and confident from slaughter on the road we let all the fire from the live-shows translate onto the songs and the recording-sessions 'til we all felt that unbeatable feeling of grand accomplishment. The feeling that we had a really special beast of an album on our hands."

DEVIAN has additionally also being confirmed to appear on the "Winterfest" 2009 tour in January with Deicide, Samael, Vader and label mates Zonaria. See below for all upcoming Devian tour dates: More...

Century Media Celebrates 20th Anniversary

2008 has become an extremely exciting year in the history of Century Media Records, one of the world's most respected independent homes for heavy music, as the label is celebrating its 20th anniversary!

The company's Anniversary year started off with an extremely successful, first-ever yard sale/party at the Century Media office in Dortmund (Germany) in June, where several hundred guests partied out on exclusive live shows by Angel Dust and Turisas. A video with impressions from the event can be seen at this location. A photo gallery for this event can be viewed here.

To further celebrate this anniversary Century Media Records will release the very special 2CD compilation "Covering 20 Years Of Extremes" on September 15th in Europe and on October 14th in North America. The various artists covers-release includes 32 mostly exclusive recordings and will be available in stores for the price of one CD. Sticking to the "keep it in the family" slogan, CM approached their artists about covering songs from other acts within the label's repertoire and the response from the musicians was overwhelming.

Some choices were obvious and homages to the bands that influenced them, others were inspired picks. This combination ended up leading to a heavily entertaining and truly special final result across all sub-genres of heavy music.

Devian Announce New Bassist

Swedish melodic death/black metallers DEVIAN — who feature in their ranks former MARDUK members Legion (vocals) and Emil Dragutinovic (drums) after their departure from MARDUK — have posted the second "webisode" documenting the recording process for the group's debut album, "Ninewinged Serpent", due on October 22 via Century Media Records. Watch the three-and-a-half-minute clip below.

In other news, Legion has issued the following update:

"We are pleased to announce that in our ranks we now have one of my oldest brothers in arms, namely Roberth Karlsson [on bass] who some of you might recognize for his previous work in EDGE OF SANITY. I'm thrilled to work with Roberth again since it was with him I had my first black metal band 16-17 years ago, and to now hook up again after all this time for new metal onslaughts in DEVIAN feels fucking awesome.

"Our lead guitarist Marcus [Lundberg] has chosen to step off the ship due to personal reasons. The lead guitar duties are now handled by Tomas Nilsson who played bass on 'Ninewinged Serpent'. We wish Markus the best of luck for the future, and welcome aboard, Robert!!"

"Ninewinged Serpent" was recorded at Sweden's Art Decay Studio. Mixing duties were handled by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman (AT THE GATES, ARCH ENEMY, DIMMU BORGIR). The cover artwork was created by Greece's master of dark visuals Seth (PARADISE LOST, SOILWORK, OLD MAN'S CHILD).

"Ninewinged Serpent" track listing:

01. Serenade For The Fallen [Intro]
02. Dressed In Blood
03. Heresy
04. Scarred
05. Suffer The Fools
06. Fatalist
07. Gemini Is The Snake
08. Instigator
09. Remnant Song
10. Ninewinged Serpent

Regarding the upcoming CD, Legion said, "It's a pummeling blackened death thrasher, where we really tried to challenge ourselves and bring fresh elements to the music compared to our efforts in previous projects, and I'd say we managed to achieve that. What at first looked to be mine and Emil's continuation of 'World Funeral' grew into a much more multifaceted sound and we loved taking it in that direction and really making it all it could be. It's no-bullshit raving metal straight from the heart charged with uncontrollable anger, haunting melodies and bone crushing heaviness. It's got a lot of power and soul and we are all extremely proud of what we’ve managed to achieve."

Devian Signs To Century Media Records

Century Media has announce the recent addition of Swedish melodic Death/Black Metallers DEVIAN to the label’s diverse roster. DEVIAN was originally founded by former Marduk members Legion (Vocals) and Emil Dragutinovic (Drums) after their departure from the Black Metal commando in their strife to come up with a new breed of wretched Scandinavian Metal. Together with guitarists Joinus, Markus Lundberg (both members of Sargathanas Reign) and bassplayer Tomas Nilsson, DEVIAN form an unstoppable organic extreme Metal machine driven by a raving hunger and deadset determination.

Bandleader Legion comments on the signing with CM as follows: “Speaking for the whole band, I want to say that we’re psyched, to say the least, about initiating the DEVIAN onslaught on such a killer label as Century Media. We are all fans of the label and the music they’ve put out during the years. Having worked with them for some releases during the Marduk years, I know they always did a job well done to a fault. We couldn’t have found ourselves a better label home.”

DEVIAN have finished tracking their upcoming debut album at Sweden’s Art Decay Studio, whereas mixing duties were handled by sound-wizard Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman (At The Gates, Arch Enemy, Dimmu Borgir, etc.). DEVIAN’s debut will be entitled “Ninewinged Serpent” and is tentatively set for release via Century Media Records by October 2007.

Legion adds the following about the album: “It’s a pummeling blackened death thrasher, where we really tried to challenge ourselves and bring fresh elements to the music compared to our efforts in previous projects, and I’d say we managed to achieve that. What at first looked to be mine and Emil’s continuation of “World Funeral” grew into a much more multifaceted sound and we loved taking it in that direction and really making it all it could be. It’s no-bullshit raving metal straight from the heart charged with uncontrollable anger, haunting melodies and bone crushing heaviness. It’s got a lot of power and soul and we are all extremely proud of what we’ve managed to achieve.”

You can visit the band’s newly created myspace profile to check out a preproduction medley (more tracks are expected soon).

Here is the DEVIAN line-up:
Legion - Vocals
Joinus - Lead and Rhythm Guitar
Markus Lundberg - Lead and Rhythm Guitar
Tomas Nilsson - Bass Guitar
Emil Dragutinovic - Drums
