Broken Hearts: An Ode To Anti-Love Metal

February 14th is a date that means different things to different people. For some, Valentine’s Day is that special occasion to show someone how much you care, while for others it’s an unfortunate reminder of just how long that unused condom has been stashed in your wallet. For every lucky gentleman who has found the lady he can sexually accost without fear of court mandated harassment classes, there’s that lonely soul who will spend Valentine’s Day with nothing but music out the speakers and a bottle of Jack.

No matter which side you fall on, heavy metal has got a song to match your mood and help you head bang through the gooiest of all the holidays.

Whether any given track is purposefully over the top and funny, depressing enough to make you pull out the eyeliner and candles, or just plain outright disturbing, metal is no stranger to the anti-love song. So for those of you will be spending Valentine’s Day alone, or just simply think the holiday is nothing more than a marketing ploy to sell chocolates and greeting cards, here’s a series of anti-love anthems to get you through the day.

For those who still have a heart and haven't devolved into extreme cynicism, you can also check out our companion listing of pro-love heavy metal music at this location.

Metalunderground.com is no stranger to aberrant sexual behavior, as we have the honor of being home the infamous “I’d put my tongue in her butt” forum thread. The following, um, “tongue-in-cheek” songs are all dedicated to everyone who has ever contributed a post to that thread.

Whether 80’s glam rock parody/tribute act Steel Panther is singing love songs or anti-love songs is a matter of some debate. What could be more loving than each band member’s willingness to sleep with anything that moves, regardless of VD status? Take the particularly touching song “Turn Out The Lights,” in which we are informed that front man Michael Starr is in desperate need of some physical attention, even though his partner actively disgusts him. What’s a horny rock star to do? Look no further than the title for the answer:

Katatonia Announces Last Fair Day Gone Night Tour

Sweden dark metal act Katatonia has issued the following update about 20th anniversary shows in Europe:

"20 years of Katatonia going strong calls for a celebration and we'll be doing just that by throwing five very special anniversary gigs in Europe this coming May presented as the 'Last Fair Day Gone Night - An Evening With Katatonia' tour 2011.

"We've decided to play the entire 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down' album front to back as that's the one album that got us true worldwide recognition for the first time, but 2011 is also the album's 10th anniversary so re-visiting this album seems more fitting than any other record we've done. A second set will follow that will see us play a mix of tracks from the rest of our catalogue. We'll be doing some fan favorites classics but also look into a couple of obscure B-sides and such that we've never or hardly played live before. Together you should get over two hours of live music on this last fair day gone night. Besides the standard tickets, which will go on sale this Wednesday, January 19th, we've decided to reserve 70 tickets per show for VIPs who will be up for some real nice treats.

"If you're one of those VIPs, you will receive a Katatonia tour messenger bag upon arrival filled with exclusive items such as a t-shirt exclusive to that particular show, an exclusive VIP laminate, a + 20-page tour programme (that we're all busy writing as I'm typing this), a limited-edition vinyl of our latest album 'Night is The New Day' and a bunch more cool Katatonia merch items.

"But that's not all; all VIP's will have a dedicated meet-and-greet with the whole band so we can shake hands, have your picture taken and hang out for a chat! After that you can watch us soundcheck for about an hour where you'll hear some songs from the set list and watch us prepare the show. Then it's dinner time so you can go out and grab a bite while you'll be confident to learn that your VIP laminate will allow you back inside the venue a bit earlier than anyone else, so you'll have a smooth and free picking to where you like to position yourself.

"The London, U.K. show will be filmed for a DVD. Last but not least; right now we're very busy talking to all our equipment endorsers for them to make some goods available that we'll combine into one 'grand prize'! All VIP's will automatically enter into a draw for one lucky guy or girl to win this ultimate prize, which we'll reveal the details about in the next coming weeks. See it as a nice extra bonus already and you can't get disappointed….

"Head over to the tour dates for more detailed information. VIP tickets are on sale as of now and standard tickets will go up on sale this Wednesday.

"If you chose to get a VIP ticket, you should be prepared to be at the venue around 2 p.m. on show day. Exact times will vary per show but you'll be notified in advance of all confirmed details. We hope you're just as much excited about this special celebration as we are! See you at the show and let's have a toast for the last fair day gone night!"

The dates are as follows:
May 4, 2011 - Kulturfabrik - Luxembourg, Luxembourg
May 5, 2011 - Stollwerck - Cologne, Germany
May 6, 2011 - Koko - London, UK
May 7, 2011 - De Kade - De Kade, The Netherlands
May 8, 2011 - Alhambra - Paris, France

Katatonia Makes A First Time Visit To Vancouver

Although being located in the least favourable part of Vancouver, the Rickshaw Theater has quickly become one of the city’s top venues for all things metal. Countless bands from all genres and areas of the underground have been congregating at the small theater on Vancouver’s famed “Downtown Eastside,” treating the city to a wide range of different metal sounds. On Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010 the Rickshaw played home to one of Europe’s top dark metal acts in Katatonia along with other international metallers Swallow the Sun (Finland) and Orphaned Land (Israel). The crowd, while not sold out, was highly anticipating Katatonia’s first ever appearance in the city and once the lengthy show came to an end they surely left satisfied. More...

Katatonia Has Guitars Stolen

Following a slew of sold out headlining shows on the band's North American tour, Sweden’s Katatonia hit a major bump in the road over the weekend when the band realized two guitars, straps, and wireless transmitters were stolen at the stop in St. Paul on Saturday. The band issued the following statement:

"Unfortunately tonight's gig reached an all time low. Two of our guitars got stolen (including our straps with wireless transmitters), obviously causing performance difficulties, frustration and anger. Then against all odds, further technical problems kept on coming down one after another during the show. Apologies goes out to our fans in Minnesota for having to go through this."

The stolen Mayones guitars were to be the grand prize in two Katatonia giveaways that were launched in celebration of the otherwise successful headlining run on the "Night Over North America" tour. Fans are encouraged to check Craigslist, Ebay, local pawnshops, etc. for the missing guitars, and report any suspicious activity to the band. Katatonia still has the following upcoming tour dates: More...
