Katatonia has checked in with the following announcement about an Easter egg in the newly released "Skyrim" video game containing references to the band:
"Now why would we post a link to a video game? Well, read on, this is quite amusing....
"During the quest Darkness Returns, you can recover Nystrom's Journal, which is a reference to Anders Nystrom, guitarist and songwriter from Swedish heavy metal band Katatonia.
"The terms in the last paragraph: 'He also mumbled some nonsensical phrases like 'night is the new day' and how he was the 'ghost of the sun.' I have no idea what these cryptic sentiments mean, but hopefully during tomorrow's ritual, Anders and I will put everything we've learned to the test.' are references to multiple Katatonia albums and songs - the most obvious being the album Night is the New Day and the song 'Ghost of the Sun' from the album Viva Emptiness.
"When completing this quest, the player jumps into a hole. In the hole is a skeleton containing 'Ander's Note.'" More...

"The ultra-rare 1994 mini-album of death/doom metal mastery, 'For Funerals to Come', will be released on vinyl on November 7th (CD TBA) through Peaceville Records. 'For Funerals to Come' contains the trademarks of early era Katatonia with the haunting guitar melodies & slow tempo combining with the tortured vocals of Jonas Renkse to create an aura of melancholy & gothic darkness.

Their latest and most polarizing album, “Heritage,” just released to the world (and reviewed here,) Opeth began their fall North American tour with support from the well-established Katatonia. One of the first shows was in Nashville, TN just this Wednesday, the 28th, and the crowd didn’t react as divided as the internet let on that it would. The Cannery Ballroom turned out to be the perfect size for the show, with the crowd filling up all the way to the back.
Both bands had a very passionate crowd, eager to find a spot and keep it the entire show. When Katatonia came on, they walked out to fairly loud cheers, kicking things off with their concoction of chugging and atmospherics. During the set, the band was bathed in a dark red crimson light, with only faint hues of blue lights hitting them from the front, mixing with the music to make for an altogether dark experience. Opeth’s latest album “Heritage” has divided the band's fan base in a way not seen since 2003 with “Damnation,” and even back then, it never got as heated as some of the discussions on “Heritage” going off in various forums, blogs, and web sites. With Opeth’s 10th studio album released just a few days prior, the band made a stop in rain-soaked Philadelphia on the first U.S. headlining tour in support of “Heritage.” With fellow Swedish act Katatonia as direct support, the Trocadero was sold-out for the show. What fans got was from both bands was a few solid hits and a mellow atmosphere that caught many off-guard. More...
Katatonia has announced several special 20th anniversary North American shows in celebration of two decades of gloom and doom. The headlining “Last Fair Day Gone Night 2011” performances will take place in the United States and Canada while the band is in North America for the upcoming “Heritage Tour” with fellow Swedish heavyweight, Opeth. Full dates for “Last Fair Day Gone Night 2011” and the “Heritage Tour” can be seen below. Guitarist Anders Nyström issued the following statement in anticipation of the “Heritage Tour:”
"Both you and we know that North America damn well deserves to see more of Katatonia, right? So how could we possibly resist heading back to the States this fall when Opeth are giving us the opportunity to be their special guests? It was just a matter of time before it had to happen again. Yes we toured together in the same formation ten years ago in Europe, and not only was that tour very well received by both bands’ fans, but we also shared a great ride together as long time friends. Some people have even been calling this bill their ‘dream line-up’, so it's only fair that the loyal fans in North America now get their piece of the cake too! So come out and see us on this great tour and remember we're playing headlining sideshows as well! Looking forward! Cheers!"

"It is with great regret that Katatonia are forced to cancel their September 9th appearance at the Unirock Festival in Istanbul, Turkey.
"Due to a conflict with the festival’s promoter who were not able to fulfil their contractual obligations, our agent and management decided to pull out as we can’t afford to risk financial loss.
"We hereby apologize to any fans who were expecting us to appear and we’ll do our absolute best to schedule a new tour date for Turkey in the near future."

"Both you and we know that North America damn well deserves to see more of Katatonia, right? Morbid Angel's new album "Illud Divinum Insanus" will be out in less than a week, and Season of Mist has now asked a series of famous names in the metal what they thought of the influential extreme metal act's new opus. The commentary from the various musicians can be viewed below, or you can check out Metalunderground.com's review here.
"The new Morbid Angel album will cause 3rd World War. After June 7th, the extreme metal scene is never gonna be the same again... And I already can't wait the moment I'll be sitting on my sofa listening to 'Illus Divinum Insanus' while the world burns! Ha!" - Nergal, Behemoth.
"No other band in the entire Extreme Metal genre but Morbid Angel would have ever dared to make 'Illud Divinum Insanus'. There are going to be quite a few unimaginative underground purists who think they know better what kind of album Morbid Angel should or should not be putting out, but with 'Illud Divinum Insanus' Trey and David prove that they answer to no one but themselves. It is an incredibly well written, performed, recorded and produced record." - Karl Sanders, Nile.
"One of the best death metal releases since their last album with Vincent. I'm not too much into the techno bits but I am a dude who will appreciate and respect bands doing new things, progressing... So it's all good. Vincent's vocals of course are still as good as they come. And the riffs are definitely there, Trey always delivers. New drummer is killer too!" - Mikael Akerfeldt, Opeth.
"The ultimate voice of death metal is back, as hellish as ever!" - Mikael Stanne, Dark Tranquillity.
"Glad to see Morbid Angel are back! We had our share of criticism when we first incorporated electronic elements in our sound and we know it takes courage and passion to follow one's own stream of inspiration. This time the guitar work is more impressive than ever and those 11 songs are a real 'tour de force'. With this new album they're not afraid to take the hit from the more conservative audience but that's what it means to be extreme!" - Vorph, Samael
"Innovation, wits and a feral 'no compromise' attitude is what brands the greatest of bands. 'Illud Divinum Insanus' is all that and a leap further! Hail Morbid Angel!" - Rune "Blasphemer" Eriksen, Ava Inferi, ex Mayhem. More...

February 14th is a date that means different things to different people. For some, Valentine’s Day is that special occasion to show someone how much you care, while for others it’s an unfortunate reminder of just how long that unused condom has been stashed in your wallet. For every lucky gentleman who has found the lady he can sexually accost without fear of court mandated harassment classes, there’s that lonely soul who will spend Valentine’s Day with nothing but music out the speakers and a bottle of Jack.
No matter which side you fall on, heavy metal has got a song to match your mood and help you head bang through the gooiest of all the holidays.
Whether any given track is purposefully over the top and funny, depressing enough to make you pull out the eyeliner and candles, or just plain outright disturbing, metal is no stranger to the anti-love song. So for those of you will be spending Valentine’s Day alone, or just simply think the holiday is nothing more than a marketing ploy to sell chocolates and greeting cards, here’s a series of anti-love anthems to get you through the day.
For those who still have a heart and haven't devolved into extreme cynicism, you can also check out our companion listing of pro-love heavy metal music at this location.
Metalunderground.com is no stranger to aberrant sexual behavior, as we have the honor of being home the infamous “I’d put my tongue in her butt” forum thread. The following, um, “tongue-in-cheek” songs are all dedicated to everyone who has ever contributed a post to that thread.
Whether 80’s glam rock parody/tribute act Steel Panther is singing love songs or anti-love songs is a matter of some debate. What could be more loving than each band member’s willingness to sleep with anything that moves, regardless of VD status? Take the particularly touching song “Turn Out The Lights,” in which we are informed that front man Michael Starr is in desperate need of some physical attention, even though his partner actively disgusts him. What’s a horny rock star to do? Look no further than the title for the answer:
