Katatonia To Release New Album In June
Swedish grandeurs of melancholic heaviness, Katatonia, return with Nightmares as "Extensions Of The Waking State," set for release on June 6, 2025 via Napalm Records. Once again, the Stockholm-based unit masterfully navigates the tightrope act between nocturnal darkness and Scandinavian despair while subtly weaving a sense of hope into the listener’s heart. "Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State" marks the next step in Katatonia's evolution, building upon the foundation of their previous album, "Sky Void Of Stars" (2023) and also is an introduction to their two new guitarists. Katatonia in 2025 is composed of vocalist and founding member Jonas Renkse, bassist Niklas Sandin, drummer Daniel Moilanen, and guitarists Nico Elgstrand and Sebastian Svalland.
With the album’s lead single "Lilac", revealed today, Katatonia offer a first glimpse of what fans can expect from the new record. The track showcases Jonas Renkse’s unmistakable vocals intertwining with hypnotic rhythms, heavy riffs, and progressive elements. Accompanied by an atmospheric official music video, "Lilac" speaks straight to the heart, proving Katatonia's matchless ability to draw listeners into a whirlwind of stirring emotions.
Jonas Renkse adds:
"We are proud and excited to announce our new album, Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State, coming out via Napalm Records on June 6. As always, these songs are the stories that thrive in the corner of the eye, obscured by the light but waiting to come alive in the dusk of our morbid existence. Please enjoy the first scent – 'Lilac.'" More...

Katatonia Debuts "Opaline" Music Video
The day has come to dive into the most beautiful realms of melancholy, as Swedish grand seigneurs of gloom Katatonia have finally unveiled their Napalm Records debut and new studio album, Sky Void of Stars. "With Sky Void Of Stars," Katatonia has already enthralled critics and fans worldwide - resulting in extensive streaming and video views as well as various cover stories. On top, the album ranks at #1 on several soundchecks like German Rock Hard and Legacy Magazine.
With a captivating, story driven music video for hypnotizing "Opaline," the entity around founding members Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström not also emphasizes the release, but also teases their Twilight Burials EU & UK tour with Sólstafir and SOM – kicking off today in Tampere, Finland. Katatonia Guitarist To Miss European Tour Dates
Swedish melodic death metal legends Katatonia are set to release their latest album, "Sky Void Of Stars" tomorrow and will shortly be heading out on tour to promote the record. Unfortunately, guitarist and co-founder Anders Nyström will miss out on the European tour. A statement from the musician reads as follows:
"Hey everyone, Anders here.
"Tomorrow, Friday the 20th, we launch Katatonia’s brand new 12th album and we can’t wait to hear all your thoughts.
"The band's eager to get out on the road and start the tour, but unfortunately I won’t be able to join them on this leg due to personal family reasons. However, good news is that we have a highly competent replacement in Mr Nico Elgstrand (Entombed A.D.) who already filled in for me on an earlier occasion and did an amazing job. So rest easy, the tour will not be affected in any way and everything the band has planned surely is something you don’t want to miss!
"Until I’ll be back on stage later this spring, I wish the guys and all our fans a great time on the road, under a sky void of stars..."
Katatonia Releases New Single "Birds"
Swedish masters of melancholic metal, Katatonia, have released the third and final single, "Birds," off of their upcoming 12th record, "Sky Void Of Stars." The quick and energetic sound of this brand new track once again shows off Katatonia’s explosive potential and their genre-bending style, carried by Renkse’s longing vocals. Alongside the single, Katatonia present an atmospheric performance music video that harnesses the song’s energy and desolate power.
Since their foundation in 1991, Katatonia have experimented with several different genres, slowly progressing from their roots in doom and death metal, while adding post-rock and progressive elements to develop their very own impressively versatile, unique style. After their one-year hiatus in 2018, the band surprised fans with the outstanding 2020 album, "City Burials," a powerful combination of progressive rock and metal which stormed the European charts (e.g. peaking at #6 on the official German charts). Three years after their critically acclaimed comeback record, Katatonia will deliver another hauntingly beautiful album with the poetic masterpiece "Sky Void Of Stars."
Jonas Renkse on "Birds": "The pulse of dereliction. The insatiable need to expire. Here come the birds." More...
