Winterfylleth Unveils New Album Title Track
With the release of their ninth album, The Unyielding Season, out now via Napalm Records, UK’s black metal legends Winterfylleth unleash the title track as the third single. "The Unyielding Season" captures the overarching theme of the album: the song is a reflection of the current state of the world wrapped in raging, yet refined atmospheric black metal, guiding the way to a worthy follow up to 2024’s celebrated predecessor "The Imperious Horizon."
Winterfylleth's ninth album is a social commentary wrapped in meticulously crafted poetry and prose. Where the preceding album described an ominous, malevolent force, lurking in the distance, "The Unyielding Season" now explores said threat becoming a reality.
Chris Naughton on "The Unyielding Season":
"‘The Unyielding Season’ – the song that puts music and emotion to the album concept as a whole. A beautiful, haunting and reflective track that tries to capture the weight and gravity of the current social circumstances we are living through in the world. It shares its concept with that of the wider album, and essentially tries to be a voice of the people against the tide of pressures in the world." More...

Winterfylleth Reveals "Echoes In The After" Video
With "Echoes In The After," UK black metal legends Winterfylleth unveil the second single from their upcoming album, "The Unyielding Season," out 27th March via Napalm Records. Inspired by the felling of the Sycamore Gap tree, a landmark near Hadrian’s Wall, and adapted from a poem from Sir Philip Sidney’s 16th-century epic "The Countess Of Pembroke’s Arcadia," "Echoes In The After" is a powerful atmospheric black metal lament to nature and social commentary in one.
Chris Naughton about "Echoes In The After": "The lyric for this song was written as a reaction to the cutting down of the famous 'Robin Hood' tree at Sycamore Gap on Hadrian’s Wall, in the North East of the UK. The song is about how some people seem to loathe iconic symbols of history and cultural importance that the local community share in, and hold dear. It speaks to a wayward mentality of individuals who would happily see these types of landmark destroyed, as though nothing is sacred.
"The lyric paints an image of the land and nature responding to the damage of the tree, almost like it is reacting to the loss of a limb or of a part of itself. It speaks about the wider area being scarred by this situation - with the lyric being written like a lament from nature to itself, condemning the demise of such an iconic symbol. An event that felt like it occurred in a cold, oddly curated and premeditated manner. It was an unsettling circumstance that resonated with us all in the band; particularly as we had used the tree as inspiration for the artwork of our 2018 album, The Hallowing of Heirdom." More...

Scour
At the beginning of the 90s, when the world was burning with the fire that had spread from Norway, the vocalist of Pantera shocked everyone when he appeared wearing black metal t-shirts out in public. Back then, it felt like Phil Anselmo belongs to another world, that this was not his revolution, but we were yet to fully grasp the depth of his engagement with the extreme underground, both as a fan and – as we were soon to find out – as an artist. Scour is not the first black metal band with Phil at the mic, but it is the one in which he has shown the full range of his hellish talent. He’s joined by many a highly ranked member of the American extreme, musicians who have tenured with Cattle Decapitation, Misery Index, and Agoraphobic Nosebleed, to name a few, so there’s really no surprise that they’ve come to make music that leaves the bitter aftertaste of death/grind and the blood spat out from taking a jaw-breaking hit.
Kublai Khan TX
Kublai Khan, the Mongol one, was the most powerful ruler of the Middle Ages. Kublai Khan, the Texan one, is one of the most important players on the American metalcore scene – or more specifically, its radical subsect. There’s no dissolving the socially engaged message in little too pretty melodies – here you have the machinery of the old thrash metal, the unyielding of hardcore, the brutality and the heaviness. Even with just their debut album, Balancing Survival and Happiness (2014), Kublai Khan TX were conquering the big stages. Now with each new record (the latest being their fifth album, Exhibition of Prowess, released in 2024) and each sold-out tour, they’ve only bolstered their standing.
Acid King
They’ve taken their name from the pseudonym of Ricky Kasso, an American teenager, with a predilection for drugs and metal, who murdered his friend, allegedly, on the behest of the devil himself. The tragic case of Kasso fuelled the fire of the Satanic panic that engulfed America in the mid-80s. However, more importantly for our current point of interest, it inspired Lori S., a Californian guitarist and vocalist, to create the stoner/doom monster that has been bathing in the waters of tarry riffs, psychedelic trips and occult mysteries since 1993, daring us to swim with them. In Gdansk, they’ll play a set composed of songs from their cult 1999 album, Busse Woods.
Winterfylleth
The winter is coming. Winterfylleth hail from Manchester, a city not known for its heavy music, but their music claims pedigree somewhere further north, drawing on the Scandinavian vision of the black art. They combine this corrupt formula with their own artistic leanings, as well as the historical and spiritual heritage of the Old England. The tumult of bloody battles, the hale of the northern wind and the hushed exhale of mist-covered marshes all echo in their music, though what you hear first and foremost is that Winterfylleth know how to play black metal of the highest order. Winterfylleth Parts with Bassist Nick Wallwork
British atmospheric black metal band Winterfylleth has announced the departure of bassist and backing vocalist Nick Wallwork after 16 years together. Replacing him is Mark Doyle, who has filled in for the band previously and plays with related project Arð. The band announced:
After giving his all for 16 years, 7 albums, 2 live albums, various EPs, as well as performances at almost every show we have ever undertaken, Nick Wallwork has taken the decision to hang up his guitar and retire from Winterfylleth.
While there is no animosity or impact on our relationships in his departing (and indeed he will still be around for Arð, and our other less intensive projects) it is still difficult to be losing the talents of a great musician and friend from our main endeavours as Winterfylleth. It takes a lot from a person to be in a band for the long haul – both in terms of the time & continual efforts needed to maintain it and push it forwards. All of this having to be done around the rest of life’s many requirements.
It goes without saying that Nick’s presence will be greatly missed by us all, and that he will always remain, to us, a member of Winterfylleth. In his parting, we have come to accept that life dictates other priorities for everyone at various stages throughout its course, and that there are other ‘peaks that must be climbed’ for us all. So, we all support his decision to progress into the next chapter of his life.
I hope you will join us in thanking Nick for everything he has done while in Winterfylleth these last 16 years!More...

MU Goes To Hell: Incinceration Fest 2024
One of the wonderful things about Camden, a very busy area of north London, is the amount of venues there are. London in general has plenty of live music hosts, but it seems if one has to go to Camden, or a neaby area like Tufnell Park or Kentish Town, if they want to experience some live metal. This is exactly why many flocked to the likes of the Electric Ballroom and The Underworld this past Saturday, as Incinceration Fest returned for its ninth edition to celebrate black and death metal, as well as some other examples of the extreme, from the UK and abroad.
While Ante-Inferno kicked things off in The Underworld, this review begins a short time later at the Electric Ballroom around the corner, where east English veterans Fen took to the stage quickly after the doors opened. Heavily inspired by their home area from where they draw their name, Fen channels the beauty and fury of the natural world through their music, which is epic in scope and offers so much to be enthralled by. Guitarist, The Watcher howled and screamed his way through five numbers, two of which were taken from their latest album, "Monuments To Absence," and those who made their way to the Ballroom for this performance all seemed very impressed, myself included. The trio possess an imposing stage presence which makes the delivery of this absolutely fascinating music all the more powerful. An excellent way to begin the festival! More...

Winterfylleth Announces UK Tour Dates
British Black Metal pioneers Winterfylleth have announced that their 'The Cathedral of Reckoning' tour with special guests Mork will hit venues across the UK in October. The tour follows the release of Winterfylleth's 2020 critically lauded album The Reckoning Dawn and the recent re-release of their tenth anniversary Mercian Sphere vinyl via Candlelight Records.
The tour kicks off on 18th October in Winterfylleth's hometown of Manchester and takes in cities across the UK before finishing in London.
Winterfylleth vocalist Chris Naughton informs: “After two thwarted attempts to get a new album tour off the ground, we are pleased to announce that we have reorganised a fresh run of shows with our friends in Mork. 18 months after the release of The Reckoning Dawn we will finally be able to bring our newest songs to an audience for the first time. With Mork having released their fantastic new album Katedralen in the meantime as well, we are coming back stronger than ever, with a wealth of new material for our fans. We look forward to seeing you all in October. Until then!"
Thomas Eriksen of Mork comments: “Mork has visited the UK on a couple of occasions, all of the shows were such a brilliant experience for us. To be able to go back and do a longer run is such a privilege and to be able to do it together with the lads in Winterfylleth is the icing on top of the cake! See all of you during the reckoning! “

- OBI strip featuring the original hand drawn 'Guardians' from the first edition CD artwork
- 2 x LPs on Limited Edition Black/White/Swirl Vinyl
"When I think about the ever moving train ride of being in a band, it can sometimes be difficult to stop, put your foot on the brake and look backwards at where you have been on the journey to get you to the now," comments guitarist/vocalist Chris Naughton. "Often you become so focused on what is happening now, and where you are headed creatively, that you don’t pause and think to celebrate your victories along the way. For me, it’s nice to now do that with The Mercian Sphere Ten Year Anniversary Edition, which is, in lots of ways, the album that signified our arrival as a band on the bigger stage; and one that I look back on with the fondest of memories and a great deal of pride.
"Many of our fans still consider this to be their favourite of our albums, and with songs like The Wayfarer (Trilogy), The Fields of Reckoning, A Valley Thick With Oaks and Defending The Realm all becoming mainstays in our live set, this one really became the standard that all of our future albums would have to live up to. We wanted to honour that passing of ten years and have put together a really great package here with new cover art, a deluxe new vinyl and some interesting reflections on the album from all the band members who made it. We hope you enjoy it and can share in this ten year anniversary with us." More...
Winterfylleth Posts New Lyric Video Online
British Black Metal pioneers Winterfylleth have released a lyric video for their merciless track "Misdeeds Of Faith," the second single taken from their forthcoming new album "The Reckoning Dawn," set for release on 8th May 2020 via Candlelight Records/Spinefarm Records.
"The new single, 'Misdeeds Of Faith', is a really immediate, aggressive and visceral song for Winterfylleth, and is probably the song least like the others on the album," comments guitarist/vocalist Chris Naughton. "But for me that's no bad thing, as it's an interesting twist on the Winterfylleth sound in that it mixes a more 'up front' style of riffing with the chanted vocals and the elements of the band that might be more familiar to our fans. It's actually the first song on the new album and sets out the album as a triumphant return to Black Metal (after the acoustic album) and is hopefully a moment that makes people sit up and listen."
The first full length metal album since 2014’s "The Divination of Antiquity," The Reckoning Dawn finds the band returning at the absolute top of their game, across an expansive journey of an album. Eight brand new songs of blistering, atmospheric and emotive black metal adorn the records near 60 minute running length and serves to highlight the strength and depth of material in the Winterfylleth canon, resulting in one of the darkest and most powerful records of 2020.
Recorded and produced once again by the legendary Chris Fielding (Primordial, Napalm Death, Conan, Electric Wizard, Fen) at Foel Studios in Wales, The Reckoning Dawn shows the band at their strongest. More...
Winterfylleth Reveals New Album Details
Two years after their critically acclaimed acoustic/folk album, "The Hallowing of Heirdom," British Black Metal pioneers Winterfylleth are poised to return on May 8th 2020 with the release of their visceral new album, "The Reckoning Dawn" via Candlelight Records/Spinefarm Records. Ahead of the release the band have released title single "The Reckoning Dawn" which can be heard below.

Guitarist/vocalist Chris Naughton commented: "Having spent the last 2 years in a very different creative space, touring our acoustic album, and bringing those shows to evocative, atmospheric and unique venues all over the UK and Europe, we are now pleased to announce our return to the realms of Black Metal with our new album, The Reckoning Dawn. The culmination of almost two years of writing and collective hard work, what we are presenting here is a visceral & emotive new Winterfylleth album that we are all truly proud to put forth into the world.
"We've taken the time over the last few years to craft and grow our sound into different musical areas, really wanting to contrast that on this album; taking what we had learned from those other experiences and distilling that into what we have created here. To me it feels like a mighty, passionate and essential album of songs that push the boundaries of what a Winterfylleth metal album can be, but that also harkens back to our more traditional Black Metal sound in a more immediate way. Today we share the title track with you, but in the coming weeks and months look forward to sharing more with you, on record and on tour with our friends in Mork. We hope to see you on the road." Winterfylleth Announces New Album
U.K. black metal outfit Winterfylleth returns with new release "The Dark Hereafter," due out on September 30th via Candlelight/Spinefarm Records.
"The Dark Hereafter" comes two years after the release of seminal album "The Divination of Antiquity" (2014).
Thematically, "The Dark Hereafter" casts a light on how we are now seeing the negative, long-term effects of bad policy making and global oligarchy playing out in society. It also look at how we have learnt all of these lessons before and yet ignore the wisdom of the ages.
The band once again used the production talents of Chris Fielding at Skyhammer Studio and Tim Turan at Turan Audio to make the record a reality.
"After two years away, we are really pleased to share this new record with you all," said guitarist Chris Naughton. "We thought a lot about making it, what it has to say lyrically, what that means, and how we progress along with that as a band approaching our 10th year of existence.
"In recent years, it feels like we've been living in an uncertain and unsettling world, and on 'The Dark Hereafter,' we wanted to bring the issues surrounding that uncertainty to life within these new songs. They carry a lot of meaning and sentiment for us, and we hope they will also have that meaning for you. We look forward to seeing you all along the way in 2016 and 2017." More...
