Unreleased Liquid Tension Experiment Jams Surface

In October 1998, LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT - featuring DREAM THEATER's Mike Portnoy (drums) and Jordan Rudess (keyboards) alongside bass legend Tony Levin (KING CRIMSON, PETER GABRIEL) - reunited at Millbrook Studios in upstate New York to record their second album. According to a press release, "a few days into the sessions, John Petrucci's pregnant wife went into premature labor leaving Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess and Tony Levin stranded in an already set-up and booked recording studio. So like any creative and productive musicians would do, they decided to stay and JAM... and JAM they did!
For some bizarre and still unexplained reason, the master tapes of these jams were misplaced during the mixing process. But, luckily, Portnoy records almost everything he ever does and as a result his live 2-track stereo DAT mixes are the only remaining traces of this historic jam. So what you have here is as live and raw as it gets. No overdubs, no editing, no mixing. Just three guys, their instruments and their spontaneous imaginations feeding off of each other."

The "historic jam" is being released under the moniker LIQUID TRIO EXPERIMENT. Titled Spontaneous Combustion, Magna Carta is releasing the album in Europe on October 22nd and in North America on the 23rd. The packaging is a limited edition Metallic Print DigiPak containing brand new liner notes by Mike Portnoy.

The next leg of Porcupine Tree's Deadwing European tour campaign is now almost entirely in place (just Italian shows to be confirmed). The forthcoming tours of both North Amercia and Europe will include substantially different material to the tours earlier this year, including songs new to the live repertoire. There will be several new films by Lasse Hoile, and PT now also have their own full time dedicated lighting designer. Dave Dickinson will be working closely alongside Lasse in creating a new and stronger visual aspect to the band's shows. Dave has previously worked as LD for artists as diverse as Jimmy Eat World, Kasabian, D12, The Wildhearts, 50 Cent, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Porcupine Tree To Tour w/ ex-King Crimson Members

It could be said that Porcupine Tree owe a large chunk of their fanbase to Opeth, and vice versa. Steven Wilson, frontman and production bon vivant behind the grandiose British progressive rockers, has produced Opeth's last three records — 2001's "Blackwater Park," 2002's "Deliverance" and 2003's "Damnation." But associations aside, "People either like the music or they don't — so they must be liking it," Wilson said.

"I think we've both kind of benefited from [the connection], although that was never the intention," he continued. "We just worked together because we had great admiration for each other's bands. I have to say, it's been great seeing a lot more young metal kids at the shows, digging what we're doing."

Alas, extensive touring and his commitment to Porcupine Tree have prevented Wilson from helming the new Opeth LP, which the band started working on last month. Porcupine Tree — whose new disc, "Deadwing," drops May 3 — will hit the road May 13 in Washington, D.C., for an all-encompassing U.S. tour. In a nod to the band's roots, the two former guitarists from long-running prog-rock titans King Crimson will be splitting the opening slot: Adrian Belew will open the East Coast gigs, while Robert Fripp will cover the West.

"Deadwing" will be released in three formats: a generic stereo mix, a DVD-Audio disc with a surround mix, and a special edition combining the two with a 72-page hardback book. The album is based on a script Wilson wrote several years ago. "I like hanging an album on one particular subject," he said. "It's important that every record have some sort of thematic unity." The story focuses on a man who "arrives at a point in his life fate never intended" and involves the "unraveling of the situation, to get him back to where he should have been." It's a surreal "ghost story," said Wilson, and "the idea's ultimately that this album will form a kind of companion with [the] feature film."

In an exclusive interview with Electricbasement.com, guitarist TREY GUNN explains his departure after ten years with legendary art rock/prog band KING CRIMSON, "I'd been doing it for 10 years. The Power To Believe record was coming up to a close and it finished up a cycle. I think Robert [Fripp] wanted to do something different, so I bowed out." He went on clarify the tone of the deaprture, "It might have seemed surprising from the outside, but it was an amicable situation." Meanwhile, Gunn has a new solo album called Untune the Sky out on InsideOutMusic.
