Comatose Music has announced the February 4th release of "Violence and the Macabre" from Philippino brutal death metallers Down From The Wond. After signing with Comatose in October 2012, Down From The Wound went to work on the follow-up to their 2007 debut, "Agony Through Rituals of Self Purification." The results see the band return with 50 minutes of flesh-shredding southeast asian brutality with old-school atmosphere and organic production.
Down From The Wound are no strangers to the death metal scene; they have been punishing eardrums since 2002 with their nasty combination of inhuman breakdowns and technical riffing. An early preview, in the form of album track "Schematic Fraud," is now available for streaming over at Comatose Music. (Scroll two-thirds of the way down the page to access it). Also, two of album's eleven tracks, "Infiltrate" and "Ill-Fated Annihilation," have made their way into youtube uploads. Both are featured below.
A few weeks ago in Unearthing the Metal Underground, I introduced some ultra brutal bands from the southern Filipino city of Davao. This time around, let’s take a look at the capital of Manila, which definitely isn’t to be outdone in the slamming, blasting sickness category. The Metro Manila area, an impossibly huge urban center, is bursting with bands weaned on a steady diet of Disgorge, Malignancy, Devourment, and Gorgasm, so let’s get right down to it.
OK, so technically Pus Vomit isn’t actually from Manila, but the band is from right next door to the metro area, and calls Dasmarinas home. There’s no doubt the denizens of metro Manila can clearly hear the unholy din this three piece has been conjuring since 2005 no matter what part of the packed metropolis they hail from.
Pus Vomit keeps things simple from a lineup perspective, with just drums, vocals, and a guitar player, but there’s little simple about the Pus Vomit sound, which is equal parts slamming accessibility and technical prowess. The band has kept busy since its founding, with two demos, three splits, and a full length, “Degrade the Worthless,” which came out in 2009 on Berdugo Records, the label run by Alexander De La Cruz, the man who also publishes the In Dark Purity ‘zine. Fans of far eastern brutality in the vein of Vomit Remnants, Infernal Revulsion, and Rest in Gore will revel in Pus Vomit’s insane mix of slams and technicality.
This past Saturday White Studio at Fort Canning played host to Singapore Death Fest 2011, a gathering of some of Asia’s best and most brutal grind and death metal bands.
Fiaz Grinder, who also plays bass in Singaporean death metal act Asilent, organized the fest along with Wormrot vocalist Arif Rot and production company Echo Productions. All worked extremely hard in the weeks leading up to the fest and on the weekend of the fest itself in particular, basically forgoing sleep from Friday through Sunday to make sure everything went smoothly, and without a hitch things did go off.
The venue was an interesting one, with White Studio being named for its virginal white walls, floor, and ceiling, and with the room being housed in a colonial era British military fort atop a hill in central Singapore. About 150 die hard metal heads from the Singapore scene began to gather early in the afternoon to mingle and peruse the bands’ merchandise before the late afternoon start time. At just after four p.m., the doors were opened, and the mayhem could begin. More...
